punchdrunkloveParticipant
maybe the nicest of all memories i relate to lucinda, this one unites one of her songs to landscape, and there’s no better song for it than ‘jackson’ and no landscape more stunning than rio’s coastline. i hummed/sang quietly last year, during a bus ride in town. i didn’t need to listen to it, the song simply started – and went on and on. i must have included more cities and more ‘actions’ for the ‘i don’t think i’ll’ motif or i just repeated everything out of order. i was a newcomer fan then (and still am!), i don’t think i knew the lyrics way back, but ‘jackson’ is a pretty friendly/easy song for newcomers. anyway, it stayed with me for more than 20 minutes.
right now, i’m a west-fanatic. which means that verses and melodies from most of the songs pop up unexpectedly. the amazing thing is that was my least liked album by lucinda until recently. there’s just one song i can’t quite wrap my head around, but that’s bound to change.
‘big red sun blues’ is one of the catchiest lucinda tunes, imo. ‘passionate kisses’, too. but the RT album has the INSANELY enjoyable, a frenzy, maniac masterpiece, ‘i just wanted to see you so bad’. that one tops everything. maybe the chorus repetition has something to do with the spell it casts.
punchdrunkloveParticipantjust saw flashes of the episode. it goes like this:
big scream, hospital, credits, half-dressed people doing nothing in particular, woman showering, two women sunbathing, someone gets bitten, woman pointing a knife, fight, people having sex, naked people talking, lucinda williams, vampires fighting, woman pointing a gun, people having sex, fight, death, people having (vicious) sex, end credits.
not that i have anything against this sort of stuff, but i’m up for lucinda’s next contribution to the soundtrack – and only for it.
buffy was a wonderful show with vampires and all those things (kinda), btw.
punchdrunkloveParticipanti watched the first episodes from season 1 and didn’t like much of it (except lake charles, in the pilot episode, but it could barely be heard!), i’ll make an exception for this one.
when i told my friend that lucinda wished that her song was played during a “torrid sex scene” between sookie and bill (two main characters), she said that there was indeed a torrid sex scene between the two (which she also described as vicious), but KLYK was put to better use to enhance the intimacy of a bittersweet talk after sex. her words, i’m just translating. in fact before posting i asked her if “sickening” would be appropriate to describe the sex scene, and she said “no, no”, then she came up with “vicious”. so there you go.
punchdrunkloveParticipanta friend just told me KLYK could be heard in one scene from episode 8, shown this previous sunday. it was during a talk two characters had after sex (which partly fulfills lucinda’s wish for a “hot, steamy, lustful scene”).
punchdrunkloveParticipantcopenhagen and seeing black right in the middle of the album and one after the other should be devastating.
punchdrunkloveParticipantthanks for the info, tom. now i realize what a dumb question it was. essence is one of her albuns i have yet to purchase. i expected more flowers on the back cover, but i should have guessed.
there you go: http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_iWgOclusyBI/SvWGnFHN3JI/AAAAAAAAC6U/U4qKz7w3AeI/s1600-h/Lucinda+Essence2.jpg
and almost 10 years LATER i wonder at the “LU” in “BLUE” covered in… blue. nice touch.
August 11, 2010 at 2:34 am in reply to: Question about Lucinda Williams limited live show CDs #44013punchdrunkloveParticipantthanks for answering, tom. the idea of one hundred hours of footage sitting out there is both wonderful (it exists!) and sad (it doesn’t exist for us). i hope you can pull off a documentary, but since the RT album is in the imminence of being reissued, i’m confident that a package including a dvd with one of the nights would be an extraordinary addition to an already pretty special release.
was this ever done before? a record plus a dvd with a special performance of said record? seems like a very original way to honor the earlier material.
August 9, 2010 at 10:00 pm in reply to: Question about Lucinda Williams limited live show CDs #44011punchdrunkloveParticipantNo music was taken out and very very little banter was removed either. We wanted them to be the exact version of that show.
that’s really nice to know.
i have a question. i think it was mentioned here that the reissue of the ST album would maybe include a bonus dvd with one of the two concerts lucinda performed for this album (don’t recall if it’s the ny or the la one), and i wonder if the five nights from each city (or from just one city) were taped or if just this single night was, and if there are any plans for releasing those concerts on dvd. thanks.
punchdrunkloveParticipantshe was persuaded to sit at the piano and sing a song.
which song… maybe galveston?
August 8, 2010 at 11:22 pm in reply to: Question about Lucinda Williams limited live show CDs #44007punchdrunkloveParticipantdidn’t listened to either of those, but i read here a while ago that the LA ones are slightly more favored.
but there’s a wonderful video from one of the shows in NY (oct. 4, 2007 / “passionate kisses”, self-titled album): http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=artjAo-AJxo
i hope they didn’t leave out the false start when making these cds.
punchdrunkloveParticipantjim carrey is a wise wise man.
punchdrunkloveParticipantkiss like your kiss solo sounds way nice.
and i wonder if “seeing black” is like “seeing red” only worse…
punchdrunkloveParticipanti’ll see if our german bootleg fan has any of these two demo sessions (plus the couple of shows from the other thread).
punchdrunkloveParticipantI found a clue on Lu’s FB page, punch, in regards to the link for Lu breaking into a (“Who”) song during her interview. I had missed her reply and went in search of after TO posted Lu had written some “Blessed” lyrics.
“We were blessed by the homeless man who showed us the way home.” “We were blessed by the blind man who could “We were blessed by the homeless man who showed us the way home.” “We were blessed by the blind man who could see for miles and miles.
there you go. 🙂
those “blessed” verses remind me of “sidewalks of the city”.
punchdrunkloveParticipantFor any curdmudgeons still on the fence about expanding their cyberspace world ~ I was all a twitter when Lu opened a twitter account last year, however, she has really wrapped her head, so it seems, around facebook. I recommend, if you don’t have a facebook account, or if you’re not following her if you have a facebook account, to open a facebook account and follow Lu! There’s something about what happens when Lu actually posts on facebook. Very cool.
i see what you mean, laffayete. twitter makes it impossible to estimate the vast amount of followers lucinda has (although, quite ironically, twitter is the network with categories such as “followers” and “following”). some of the messages people leave is really nice – i liked one that mentioned that it’s possible to hear her songs coming out from people’s homes in venice, california. and there’s some messages from worldwide fans, from croatia, italy and, uh, brazil (and those only in the first couple of pages).
just now someone posted a nice photo of her from the 80s: http://www.facebook.com/LucindaWilliams#!/photo.php?pid=1086026&o=all&op=1&view=all&subj=12788249188&aid=-1&id=1495268455 (is that gurf morlix with the white t-shirt?)
