punchdrunkloveParticipant
ops, forgot about:
SOAP CREEK SALOON, AUSTIN TX – JUNE 7, 1984
LIVE SET KUT-FM – AUSTIN, TX – MARCH 30, 1986
both really wonderful. those 2 were really hard to find. i hope it helps. it’d be awesome to have stuff like that preserved and remastered.
punchdrunkloveParticipantIJWTSYSB is creepy, isn’t it?
punchdrunkloveParticipanti don’t think it helps, but if the idea is to include some live versions of songs here are 7 bootlegs i like a lot from that era:
Live- Austin TX, KUT-FM, 1981 (best live version of “abandoned”, no contest)
Live- Los Angeles VA, KPFK-FM Folkscene, 1985 (IJWTSYSB)
Los Angeles CA, KPFK-FM Broadcast, 1989
San Francisco CA, Slim’s, 1989
Auckland New Zealand, The Gluepot, 1989
Los Angeles CA, KPFK-FM Broadcast, 1989
Live- Santa Monica CA, McCabes Guitar Shop, 1991 (there’s some stuff from SoW here)
*
i hope to see “song for a jewelry maker”, “all i want” and “wild and blue” there. and what about the CBS demos from 1986?
punchdrunkloveParticipant5 most exciting singer-songwriters in america:
lw, sam phillips, iris dement, neko case, gillian welch.
sometimes i wonder about my resolutely awesome taste in music… 😀
punchdrunkloveParticipantno, no, not as BADASS. this one has a very dated (in the best sense possible, she was shooting for something out of the 60s) feel to it. M&B seems fresher (even being 19 years older).
i confess i rather like, maybe prefer, sam phillips at her most low-key (basically every single album of hers after the slightly underwhelming, so-very-loud OMNIPOP, esp. A BOOT AND A SHOE), but i hold a very special place in my heart for THE INDESCRIBABLE WOW (my favorite) and M&B. the woman can write explosive pop songs and heart-tugging ballads (and, better yet, heart-tugging pop songs and explosive ballads).
and i’m REALLY impressed with neko’s new album. closer to FURNACE ROOM LULLABY + FOX CONFESSOR (her best, imo) than MIDDLE CYCLONE. narratives that feel more personal (FRL, FC) than imaginary (MC). “nearly midnight, honolulu” through to nico’s cover (“afraid”): 4 of the best tracks of the year. ‘honolulu’ may be the loveliest thing she ever created after ‘star witness’.
punchdrunkloveParticipantnow that i finally got around to it, neko case’s new album is amazing. go for it: http://www.twentyfourbit.com/2013/08/stream-neko-case-new-album/
punchdrunkloveParticipantthis is wonderful, tom. the new album feels like a natural follow-up to her “long play” project and also a departure. she wanted to imprint something of a jukebox feel to the songs, and she nailed it. not a rotten apple in that basket.
by the way, neko case’s new album is streaming since yesterday. haven’t listened to it yet, but i already love it.
punchdrunkloveParticipantyou’re too good to me! 🙂
i remember looking for that song a few years ago. grooveshark really became the place for b-sides, demos et al., huh?
i liked it a lot. thanks.
punchdrunkloveParticipantWorld Without Tears in vinyl (bonus tracks)
btw, i’d love to listen to “Buick Blues (Version One” . . . . . . .
punchdrunkloveParticipanta quick heads-up: that crossroads program with lucinda and costello is on youtube in its entirety. essential viewing.
punchdrunkloveParticipantGO! 🙂
punchdrunkloveParticipantnot only i think this is my favorite song of the decade (ok 7 more years to go, but…), i also think this performance is extremely gorgeous. i love her face when she resumes singing. watch it.
punchdrunkloveParticipantthis BLUE video is extremely moving. what a beautiful recording!
right now, i’ll skip work and watch the other videos. pity that my very favorite LW songs are absent.
punchdrunkloveParticipant(on a happier, thankful note, thanks a lot for all the videos!)
punchdrunkloveParticipanti’m just jealous, never mind, carry on et al.
