Lucinda Williams Blessed ****
Wry ‘n’ lusty with sharp-shootin’ guitar riffs, the casual but brilliant opener Buttercup sees Lucinda recalling a female version of Keith Richards. Elsewhere, her 10th album has a soulful downtempo mood as it mourns absent friends and hymns newfound contentment.

this review has more stars than lines.
punchdrunkloveParticipantpretty wonderful. thanks for the link.
punchdrunkloveParticipantoh, SEVEN years old, not 70.
makes sense either way in fact. 😀
punchdrunkloveParticipantin copenhagen i love when she sings she was 57 years old when the incident took place. don’t know why, maybe because i don’t remember any song reminiscing an incident in which the singer reveals HIS/HER age when it happened. sounds like a beautiful way to inscribe herself in that event and inscribe the listener to her experience. and not exactly because she reveals her age, but because she thinks even if she was 70 she’d be still asking why, oh why.
punchdrunkloveParticipanti wasn’t complaining! now we have two versions (and i think this will be the only chance for comparing the new with the old mix)! i’m all for that.
i think that a man singing with lucinda made the song more idyllic (“there will never be a spring so perfect again”), like they’re both on the same page, he’s just in love as she is. without his voice, the song will be quite sadder. not that anyone will think she’s alone in reminiscing about that spring, summer, autumn and winter (which is a smart way to say they had a full-on relationship), but, well, she is alone at that particular time. sounds like as if the thing could never be reenacted. what happened to all those perfect days? they still might have them in any case, but mr. costello’s presence is somewhat reassuring.
either way, great song.
punchdrunkloveParticipantcopenhagen & seeing black are riveting at just 90 seconds.
punchdrunkloveParticipanthum, i didn’t know about that.
and, just out of curiosity, why didn’t you opt to use the elvis version? btw, it’s not a re-record, right? to my untrained ears, lucinda’s vocal previewed on that swiss site sounds quite the same to the TB’s soundtrack version.
punchdrunkloveParticipantthat’s a great story, tom. i saw the video and couldn’t tell that a verse was missing.

how wonderful is blessed, the song? i’ve been listening to it nonstop and i’m very impressed. deeply moving final section, really beautiful harmony & strong instrumentation. reminds me the last two minutes of mama you sweet, in power and beauty and awesomeness.
punchdrunkloveParticipantthanks, lafayette.

i just took a look at the official website and saw the “order from amazon” note. i thought that was gonna be something different for the members of the forum. maybe i misunderstood things.
cool, now we can hear blessed, the song; it’s streamable on the site.
punchdrunkloveParticipantconcerning port arthur, besides the fayetteville version on youtube, are there other versions available? i’d like to listen to it/them.

i’ve been out in the jungle these past two weeks (really) and i’d like to know if the pre-order of blessed through the site is still happening… shipping worldwide as well?
punchdrunkloveParticipantyou have to call it what it is: a review of the single buttercup.
what a travesty. better a thoughtful 3-out-of-10 review of the album than this unprofessional passing-grade article.
although i don’t think it’s humanly possible a thoughtful 3-out-of-10 review of any lucinda album.
btw, i still don’t understand people seeing bitterness and pissed-offness in buttercup. and of course that is a bad boy song in which she finds what she’s looking for, if anything else. she rises above it.
punchdrunkloveParticipantoh, that’d be nice. thank you.
punchdrunkloveParticipantwell, here’s a treat. don’t know if this is supposed to be rare or not, and as far as i’m concerned this track is not commercially available. it’s a stunning alternate version (demo?) of that superb lucinda-like song of hers, six o’clock news. apparently it was made for radio only:
There is an ALTERNATE version of this song, made for the radio ONLY which is not on any album – it is similar, but MUCH twangier, and less “produced” sounding. The lead guitar lines are different, more soulful. The other version is better. Reply if you want info on how to get it.

punchdrunkloveParticipantthe cd that accompanies the lp is the kitchen tapes or the KT + blessed?
are we gonna be able to pick our cover (from the 8 made available)?
thanks
punchdrunkloveParticipantall my very best wishes to LW.
