right? i don’t understand at all why one thing supposedely leads to another. there are a thousand different ways to investigate the creative process of anyone. lots of interviews put “copenhagen” and “seeing black” in the same question (as Sad Songs), but they can’t be further apart. instead of asserting that ‘seeing black is a song about a suicide’ you can go with the black/red/white gradations on the song, and what about that verse ‘did you wax the deck to make it easier to slip’, which without the context is a bit comical, but it’s not funny at all. wouldn’t you prefer for a change that LW gave specific details of a single verse, how can someone waxing a ship’s deck came to her. a great image! but that’s me, i’m obsessed with lyrics. maybe LW wouldn’t say much about it, but i’d like to read this question, like, this interviewer actually pays attention to the small stuff.

can anyone upload the article? is it allowed?

btw, you all should listen to the austin, KUT-FM, 1981 performance.

superb versions of hard road, abandoned, sharp cutting wings, all i want (this song should be on a record, so good), i lost it, king of hearts…

the boot from 85 (KPFK-FM / los angeles) gave us i just wanted to see you sooo bad, 6 blocks away, this is not my town… and the wonderful, glorious, i-just-have-this-version lover of the hour (it should be on a record too).

you can get both online, pretty impressive before-i-was-born amazement.

the rumbling, explosive “Awakening.” (An extension of “Atonement” from World Without Tears)

yes. i thought of that at first. but a few more listens and i’m ready to proclaim that awakening is much, much different than atonement. it doesn’t have the weird, iconic imagery (twisted tongues, rats in the gutter, emotional rape. . .) and it lingers. atonement is possibly my least favorite LW song, the thing just drags on forever. atonement talks about “your deliverance”, freeing yourself – or someone freeing you -, but the song feels like locked in itself. awakening is the one that really feels like someone opening his eyes to the world (“i’ll kiss the sky”). how come do you know you’re awake? you must be aware that you were sleeping in the first place, and the song is a terrific mood piece because of that. she sings like she’s dreaming a world of self empowerment for herself, but nothing seems to change. the song goes nowhere and all the better for it.

It’s been rough being a Lucinda Williams fan for the past decade

condescending tone alert. i’m sure the “bad vibes” reference was for WEST. this superb album is condemned to be tagged as such forever.

    but:

“To Be Loved,” a tender ballad that every mother should sing to her children before bedtime (“You weren’t born to be mistreated/You weren’t born to be misguided/You were born to be loved”)

i like this image he proposed, never thought of that (the “bluesy” tone definitely doesn’t invite a mother and her kids to my mind). didn’t i read somewhere that this was LW’s love letter to the world? certainly feels like one indeed, but the funny thing is that the most moving letter on blessed for me, as a causal listener (not really), is “sweet love”, which is focused on a single person and not on the world.

those reviews are really letting me down, esp. those twitter-length reviews. well, those writers can’t do miracles, maybe if they were allowed more space. i don’t think it’s up to them. where is the great robert christgau when you need him?

there’s no review on pitchfork yet, but i guess they’ll do it.
