From No Depression:
How Lucinda Williams Got Her Joy Back
http://nodepression.com/articles.aspx?id=1771I know Lefty posted this review on another thread, but it’s worth reading and is one of the most insightful Little Honey and Lucinda reviews you’re likely to come across.
Pit BullParticipantKudos to Stevarino for the Kate Wolf cover. Her cover of Gram’s “Return of The Grievous Angel” is damn good. As well as Skip James’ “Hard Time Killin’ Floor Blues” off Scorsese’s “The Blues.” HOWEVER, I’ve said it before, I’ll say it again, and I’ll keep saying it until somebody on her management team gets the message: Please release her recording of Fats’ “I Live My Life.” She’s currently singing it on tour as part of her encore most nights. This song fits Lu to a “T!” I know she recorded it along with “Honey Chile” during the sessions for “Goin’ Home: A Tribute To Fats Domino. But “Honey Chile” was put on the CD and “ILML” was put on the shelf. Ain’t that a shame… Perhaps IJ could enlighten us.
Pit BullParticipantI agree. A little attribution please. Maybe it’s just an oversight. I think most readers would like to know (and appreciate) the source of the postings in the News section. Lefty? IJ?
Pit BullParticipantJust to finish this thread (and as noted in another post) the Lucinda Williams Resource Site is BACK UP! It can be viewed at: http://www.lucinda-williams.com
Pit BullParticipantPalefire – I share your enthusiasm for Bettye LaVette’s cover of Joy. By the way, it’s on her CD I’ve Got My Own Hell To Raise. I love the title too. Bettye turns Joy on its ear, gives it a dark funky vibe, and adds a whole new meaning to the song. I’m always impressed when an artist can do this. A few other notable covers that come to mind are:
Cat Power’s cover of The Stones’ Satisfaction
Rodrigo y Gabriela’s acoustic guitar cover of Led’s Stairway to Heaven
Marianne Faithfull’s version of Lennon’s Working Class Hero
Patty Griffin doing Bruce’s Stolen Car
Lucinda’s cover of Gram Parson’s Return of The Grievous Angel
And more recently, Lu’s concert cover of Fat’s, I Live My Life (I’ll say it again, please, please release her recorded version of this ASAP!!)I’d be most interested to hear what other members of this forum consider to be transcendent covers….

Pit BullParticipantTom – Most impressive! My meager contribution to this endeavor would be to point out that Lu only sang the duet “Cruel Lips” on Graham Parker’s Your Country CD. And sometimes I wonder if I even hear her voice on this track. Maybe it’s just my imagination. Subtle indeed. PB

September 12, 2008 at 5:18 pm in reply to: Lila Downs Covers Lucinda (In Spanish and English!!) #37040Pit BullParticipantThanks Lefty! Were going to catch her Saturday night (9/27 indoors) and Sunday (9/28 outdoors) 8) at the San José Latin Music Festival. Here’s the Festival link:http://sanjosemariachifestival.com/ Tickets for Sunday’s show in the Plaza are only $10!
Also, here’s Lila’s website: http://www.liladowns.com/liladaSite/Inicio.html
Pit BullParticipantOne of the reasons why Emmylou is so special (besides her great voice and musical talents) is her work to help rescue dogs from shelters in the Nashville area. Check out the website for her dog rescue group called Bonaparte’s Retreat at: http://www.emmylou.net/br.html We had a chance to talk with Emmylou about dog rescue backstage after her show in Monterey, California earlier this year. She is so passionate and committed to saving as many dogs as possible. If you live in the Nashville area and would like to foster or adopt a shelter dog contact: kate@emmylou.net
And while I’m at it, if you live in Northern California and want to help foster or adopt a rescue dog please check out www.rocketdogrescue.org Thank you!
BTW You can see Emmylou for FREE at the 8th Annual Hardly Strictly Bluegrass Festival in San Francisco’s Golden Gate Park, October 3rd-5th. For more concert info go to: http://www.strictlybluegrass.com When you see the lineups, you won’t believe your eyes!
Pit BullParticipantHey Stoger – I have a great shot of Lucinda just before she walked off the stage at The Joint. Send me a PM with your email address and I’ll send you a copy. PB
Pit BullParticipantFor the record: In June 2002 Lucinda played an aborted show at the Hard Rock Hotel in Las Vegas. She wasn’t feeling well (her voice was shot) and after about three and-a-half songs Lu said, “You can all have your money back!” and she walked off the stage. A stunned and bummed crowd slowly filtered out of The Joint to get our unwanted refunds.
But I give Lucinda high marks for not going on with the show. Her voice clearly wasn’t working for her and she didn’t want to put out anything less than her best. She did the right thing. On the flip side of this: I also remember a 2006 show in Oakland where she opened for an ill George Jones. Her set was great. But poor George Jones was really, really sick and never should have tried to do the show. But he did and it was awful. About a third of the crowd left before he even finished. My point is this: Sometimes the show must go on. And sometimes the show needs to be cancelled.
As a tragic side note, about a week after Lucinda’s gig at the HRH, The Who had to cancel their concert at The Joint when John Entwistle OD’d in his HRH suite.
