Per Shannon’s Facebook and website pages this afternoon, Shannon has cancelled her July west-coast shows, due to a lack of funds. Mr. tonyg can activate his vacation, without missing Shannon. Of course, there’s still the Anne McCue show to consider…

paul_from_losangelesParticipantI know we’re turning the Aberdare thread into a Glastonbury thread, but here’s the link to the Acoustic Tent lineup.

paul_from_losangelesParticipantThanks, lwj, for starting this thread. I arrived in London on Sunday morning, and I will be attending Lucinda’s show on Monday night. I’m sure Mr. Stoger is lurking around the London metropolis, and he will report soon. Cheers—
paul_from_losangelesParticipantPrimarily for tonyg, and other SoCal fans: Shannon’s website has released some new dates, including: Thursday, July 18, at Zoeys in Ventura, and Saturday, July 20, at the Hotel Cafe in Hollywood.
paul_from_losangelesParticipantTony, the California dates include San Francisco, Cafe Du Nord, on Monday, July 15, and San Diego, Griffin, on Friday, July 19. The latter date does not appear on Shannon’s website, but displays at TicketWeb and the Griffin site. One might speculate that Zoey’s would land in the July 16-18 range.
paul_from_losangelesParticipantShannon is currently touring to promote her “Small Town Talk” album of Bobby Charles songs. I attended her recent shows at Joe’s Pub in New York City and Martyr’s in Chicago. She is touring with a 4-piece band of guitar, bass, drums, and keyboard/horns. In New York, she also featured a piano player. Excellent music, but be prepared for a mellow Southern rock style–not Shannon’s folk style.
At Joe’s Pub, Shannon was constrained by a 1-hour set to allow for 3 different performers with 3 paid audiences. For that show, she only performed Bobby Charles songs, and Shannon only played electric guitar.
Last night, at Martyr’s, she played over 90 minutes, and included several non-Bobby Charles songs. Also, Shannon performed encores with an acoustic guitar, including the Bohemian Wedding Prayer Song.
Shannon’s tour continues into June and July, covering the Midwest and Western states. More good shows ahead…
paul_from_losangelesParticipantTom: note that Carrie’s website lists “Grocery on Home” for the following night, June 14.
paul_from_losangelesParticipantI corroborate tonyg’s report. A fascinating 1-on-1 discussion for 75 minutes, with vivid insights about Fairport Convention, Nick Drake, and Bob Dylan’s 1965 electric performance at Newport.
Joe Boyd had a Mac laptop on-stage, with video files of Nick Drake’s music. Two videos were shown on the stage-screen during the discussion. Obviously, I don’t have access to Joe’s Mac. However, after some research, I found these 2 videos, which are either identical or very close to the videos that were shown: (1) a Volkswagen commercial, and (2) Lisa Hannigan, singing Black Eyed Dog, at a Nick Drake tribute concert.

paul_from_losangelesParticipantFor as long as I stayed (I left early), Lu did not perform any songs. She presented some CD’s to the Amoeba staff, and they played her selections over the PA, while the hoards of consumers shopped, and purchased items at the 17 checkout lines. Lu chatted with the customers, but she did not bring any instruments, and she was not scheduled to sing. Perhaps, tonyg and GrumpyMama stayed later, and can augment my comments.
paul_from_losangelesParticipantThanks, Tom, for the heads-up about Huntington Beach. I did just see Carrie’s note on Facebook.
paul_from_losangelesParticipantBig disappointment that Carrie’s show scheduled for tonight (Tuesday, March 5, 2013) at the Largo in Los Angeles has been cancelled by the venue. Carrie’s Facebook listing indicates the Largo cancelled for inadequate advance ticket sales. The Largo’s E-Mail attributes the cancellation to scheduling conflicts. Whatever the reason, I am not pleased. I enjoyed Carrie’s show last month in New York City, and I was looking forward to tonight’s show.
paul_from_losangelesParticipantNew show announced for Wednesday evening, May 15, at the Brighton Festival, on the South Coast of England:
http://brightonfestival.org/event/471/an_intimate_evening_with_lucinda_williams/
Members’ priority booking opens: Thu 28 Feb, 7.30am
General booking opens: Fri 8 Mar, 9amFebruary 13, 2013 at 6:07 pm in reply to: Emmylou Harris & Rodney Crowell at The Troubadour 2/9/13 #51264paul_from_losangelesParticipantThat list is missing “Bohemian Wedding Prayer”, sung by Shannon McNally.
February 10, 2013 at 7:05 pm in reply to: Emmylou Harris & Rodney Crowell at The Troubadour 2/9/13 #51258paul_from_losangelesParticipantThanks, tonyg, for your report. I’ll add some comments.
Shannon McNally performed her marvelous Bohemian Wedding Prayer, accompanied by the house guitarist, who tonyg identified as Jed Hughes.
Joan Baez sang Diamonds and Rust, and modified the ending to “And if you’re offering me diamonds and rust, well I’ll take the Grammy”.
I was very impressed by the audience, which was very attentive and respectful. Although the venue was a rock club on a Saturday night, this was clearly an older audience, each of whom had paid $50 to hear the music, not to chatter on their cellphones. The Troubadour has been functioning as a music venue at the same location for 56 years, and many in the audience had fond memories of past nights of good music.
