After listening to SOW demo album I was struck by the way some songs changed by the time of the album actually being released. Specifically what would become Never Got Enough Love and Lines Around your Eyes.
Anyone know the duration between the demo and final versions? Also, did Lu herself listen to the tracks and decide they could do with being rewritten?
padchioParticipantlove to see the photos of the above if anyone can direct me to them
padchioParticipantTom O – shame about no Euro tour in 2011, we’re gonna miss seeing you all. Probably too early for you to say right now, but is there any chance of festival slots in the UK next year?
padchioParticipantLooks like I’m not in a minority after all! I think I read a couple of postings about the song not being a favourite.
What I appreciate about this song is the way Lu is aware that it can be hard for guys to be macho all the time, even though there is pressure to be. That she can see how a damaged chidhood can also create tension in a person is in there too.September 12, 2010 at 7:12 pm in reply to: Media Outlets Covering Americana Music Awards Show #44182padchioParticipantI listened to Bob Harris’ BBC Radio 2 show last night. He said he will have a session by Lu on his Thursday Country show over the next few weeks. He wasn’t specific but I gather it could be a a while yet. I will flag it up when I hear more.
padchioParticipantI’d love to hear Sweet Side. Feel I might be in minority there, though.
padchioParticipantSorry, but after another listen, I don’t think Kiss Like Your Kiss is a great song. It’s a good song – okay as a soundtrack song but that’s where it should have stayed. To me it’s the kind of song lu can write and sing in her sleep; the lyrics has lots of interesting colour imagery but it doesn’t have enough depth.
I hope the rest of the album is better than this.
padchioParticipantI’m sure it has been mentioned on this site before, but in this song the lines “Says he wants…” to “will not hurt him” are largely from the bible (Mark 16:18).
padchioParticipantI wouldn’t worry about your English, your comments in reply were very clear and interesting. I particualrly enjoyed what you wrote about Pineola, and am glad you agreed with my assessment that the last part was best left out. With it on the live version I don’t think the song is as mysterious and, as you posted, as universal to the listener.
padchioParticipantWow – great link. Big up to you, Punchdrunklove.
A few points/questions after listening to the two earliest bootlegs –
1. Is All I Want an original? Has it appeared elsewhere?
2. Lover of the Hour. Love chorus. Couldn’t believe verses later cropped up on Right on Time, years later.
At the risk of sounding geeky I found this interesting, a real insight into the creative process and how
nothing is thrown away but used again.
3. Pineola. 1985 bootleg has extra verses, years before it was recorded. I think it works better without these as it leaves the song more concise. What do others think?padchioParticipantI see even Lu needs help from a rhyming dictionary sometimes. So she is human!
padchioParticipantThe squidbillies info was a wind-up, right?
padchioParticipantI’m glad she’s in such a creative groove – no doubt her settled life with you is helping there. I look forward to the next record whatever it is, the covers album will just have to wait!
padchioParticipantQuestion for Tom –
Is there still a chance Lucinda might bring out an album of covers, as I recall her – on-stage, I think –
commenting she would next do this. I always enjoy hearing her do others songs as they are so interseting and ones I’m not usually aware of.Obviously from your previous post the new album seems to be original songs, but I’d love to hear that covers album.
padchioParticipantThanks for the info, Tom. However, you can read this essay on the new republic website, tnr.com
