Copenhagen was the first one to hit me……haunting beat….
I also love Seeing Black……lyrically, with the reference to the “white light” (at least that is how I interpreted it)…through the phases of black (the end) to red (blood?) to white (toward eternity)….
But when I heard Convince Me live….I LOVED it!
Then again….I love Lu and her lyrical genius……
orlananParticipantI love the fact that we get to “chat” with the band…Blake, havent seen you on this tour yet, but will be at the Beacon in July……looking forward to it.
I really like the obvious energy you are bringing to the band….looking at older songs…different ways to re-invent them…..very cool.
I am anxious to hear the “Steal your Love” version, as I always liked that song…..
Cant think of one that I would suggest to re-do right now, but I love “Still I long for your Kiss” and especially the slowed down, more acoustic version…..much more impact to me….maybe there is even more room for variation there. I always felt this was an underrated Lu song….and one I would have expected to see others cover more.
Finally, I agree with the comments about duets; looking forward to Jailhouse Tears!
Keep on rockin and enjoy!
TonyorlananParticipantJust got my ticket…..looking forward to it!
TonyorlananParticipantno opener, and I would guess the show will start early, 7:30, similar to Friday
orlananParticipantcool idea…reminds me of what Zeppelin did with their last album (remember that word!) before their untimely ending…..In Through the Out Door..
just adds something extra to what is already highly anticipated.
TonyorlananParticipantA Night with Lucinda show works for me. I called there and they said the doors open at 6:00….which, with no opener sounded awfully early to me.
I hope the sound is as good as you have heard; I still remember the show she played at the State Theatre in New Brusnwick and she just gushed about the quality of the sound…more than once! It obviously made her ngiht that much more enjoyable…which translated into a GREAT show!
And, a personal favorite…I hope she pulls out “Stil I Long for your Kiss”…acoustic slow version….my favorite, and somewhat relevant to my current personal situation….
Cant wait for the show!
TonyorlananParticipantNo opening act in NYC? And this does appear to be a standing only venue
I am going Saturday….always catch Lu when she is in the area…..just not sure about this venue…!
orlananParticipantYes, she started about 8:20…..ran for about hour and 20…..finally finished 2nd set after 11…..
orlananParticipantAccording to one of the guys filming the shows, he said LA kicked butt over the NY shows, so far….for whatever that is worth
orlananParticipantI was there, and yet, after reading these posts, almost feel as if I wasn’t! Or, that I am simplistic in my music tastes, or easily impressed…!
Overall I thought the show was great (see what I mean!). I have “only” seen Lu 6 or 8 times, so admittedly I do not have the body of work some other posters do, but I have to tell you – I love the concept (album a night) the CD being available immediately (listened to mine on way home, and again this AM – more on that later) and frankly just love her shows.
Now, I am not blindly faithful; “yes”, I thought she started slow, and did not look into it; maybe I am somewhat used to that…
I sat right behind the guy who yelled about Doug’s guitar, and frankly, I thought it WAS too low; I will not comment on whether his yelling that out was appropriate – I did think the rest of the show was better because I could hear Doug better….so, go figure.
I thought Steve Earle was great…other guests were good also…
I spoke with one of the guys doing the filming (for DVD?) and he said that, so far, the LA shows easily top the NY shows….oh well…He also said he first worked for/with Lu back when Bo Ramsey played with her…he was connected with Bo….Finally, he said that before the show, he and Doug were outside and David Byrne came by on a bike, and they said “hey David, what are you doing tonight? Want to play at the show?” Showed me his cell phone, with Byrne’s number..obviously he did not show, but only in NYAnd, finally, I thought the guitar solo during Joy was great….but, what I missed live was a little riff from Heartbreaker (that of Led Zeppelin fame)…near the end…..heard it this morning on the CD though…kind of cool….was wondering who snuck that in!!
All in all, I wish I were going again tonight!! Oh, and bought a couple of the other CDs too…..at $20 I did not think they were a bad deal at all…..$20 for a spontaneous look at a fabulous artist…..not bad at all…
Ok, have at me!!
orlananParticipantGreat topic!
I am a guy, and I love Lucinda; I am admittedly relatively “new” to Lucinda, having been a fan since 2001. I listen to WFUV here in the NY area, and every once in awhile I would hear this song that would just grab me…….then finally, with the release of Essence, Vin Scelsa (NY DJ – who I am also a big fan of!) happened to play a lot of this new CD, and BAM – I was able to finally make the connection between “that artist” I had heard sporadically on the station, with this new CD.
Since then I have bought all her CDs, been to see her approx. 8 to 10 times (first time – 9/8/01 – can hardly forget, given the events that would unfold a few days later…), and she is unquestionably my favorite artist (I do have an admitted eclectic taste – I also love Led Zeppelin, so go figure!).
I too have wondered why I loved Lucinda, when it did seem she would “naturally” connect more with women. Rather than repeat the excellent post by Ray, I would echo a lot of what he said. Her lyrics, the tone of voice, the raw emotion – probably the biggest factor. I just love that she is singing about real events, real situations that we all encounter – men or women – to which we can all relate.
I do have to say, at that first concert, I had no idea what to expect. Needless to say she was excellent!! During Essence, I swear, the palms of my hands were sweating!! Great stuff!
I also can relate to the “is she singing “for” me or “to” me” question. I don’t think there is one answer. I think for some songs, clearly it is “to” me; but for others, I do think it is “for” me, as well.
She has such a varied and terrific library of songs, it is hard to pinpoint favorites. Right now, I am listening an awful lot to “Still I long for your kiss”. I just think that is an absolute classic, that is severely underrated. I love the newer, slower rendition, as it delivers more of the emotion that I love in her music. Also love Lake Charles, Pineola, Essence, Bus to Baton Rouge, Steal Your Love, Drunken Angel, Too Cool 2 be Forgotten, …..oh boy… can go on and on!!
Great post, and thanks for having me participate! I will be going to see Lu at Town Hall in NY, Oct 2nd!! Looking forward to a great, great show! I think this concept is brilliant — cutting edge, sheds some light on Lucinda (which she is so deserving of) and allows the audience to be in Lucinda’s living room for the album, if you know what I mean. Hearing an album cover to cover is always something special, as it has its own personality and charm, and this allows us to do that…..!
Have fun!
orlananParticipantI agree about not having the first few lines play in…..would have fit perfectly……then again, perhaps a testimony to the recognition of the song, if they felt the lead in was sufficient…….
Good for Lucinda! Good PR…
