I know, in a tin pot country like NZ any touring artists are announced months (if not years) in advance!

At the moment I’m trying to give myself as much flexibility as possible, but also realising that its a HUGE country that you all live in. After arriving in New York, then to DC, its the 4 weeks after that I’m trying to fill making sure we’re in San Fran by the 22nd Oct for the flight home. A very hard job of fitting in what might be ‘must-sees’ and just accepting that we’re going to have to bypass so much, due to the sheer size of the USA.

FYI – country music is a bit of a ‘dirty word’ in New Zealand, our kids have been hugely influenced by us, and we want to indoctrinate them as much as possible while they’re still impressionable 😉

All-in-all we just want to expose ourselves to as much music as we can while we’re visiting – I’m sure we’ll do fine by winging it, and any country fan from this far away always put Memphis & Nashville on their ‘must see’ list. But any suggestions of who to look out for would also be greatly appreciated.

If anyone has any comments on sports to see that would be great too, I understand even your university level of sport is pretty spectacular. Any suggestions to give us the full American experience would be great.

Bloody hell, you guys are no help 😀 I have since discovered “The Crooked Road” so will probably venture that way. And I’m keeping an eye on a few websites of artists we like, but Sep/Oct are still a little far off so no tour dates advertised yet. I’m dreading the possibility that our ‘must-sees’ will disappear overseas when we’re in your country. It’s now less than 4 months and we’re getting pretty excited! Lucky we’ve got some quality local music to see us through until we visit the home of country music.

Heck, please don’t tour Sep/Oct time 2014 – our little family is making a once in our lifetime trip to the US. A must-do for us is at least one Lucinda show on her home soil, if not a few more. We’ve seen her the last 2 times in NZ, and hubby insists (lucky bugger saw her while he was at a conference in the US) it was a much better experience in the US.

It’s pretty bloody hard trying to plan a huge trip like that, when show dates aren’t announced until much closer to the time. We’d really like to make the most of seeing some of fave country muso’s. I’m worried they’ll all plan out of the country tours when we decide to go over.

Oh and some dude who I thought might be with the Lucinda crew filmed a few bits and pieces (including the all or most of the encore) – hope this all makes it online soon!

Very fair review, and quick! Hubby and I had wondered if Steve Earle would turn up on stage since he was in town, and it was a real treat. The encore set was definitely the highlight, not just because of Steve, but the songs played, the Joy version was particularly impressive. However a Tuesday night out was not a night for ‘groovers’ with next to nobody dancing in the aisles like last time. A lot of chair dancing, thigh slapping and foot tapping going on though.

I spent most of my time along the wall with one or all of my 3 kids (6, 8 & 10) so we could dance etc – but get this – some lady came and told me that I should leave with my children because she thinks it was an R18 venue 😡 Anyhow she was wrong, but it put a dampener on my night, especially when I know Lucinda likes to see people dancing and having a good time.

So we took our kids to their first concert of music they know well, yes it was a late night, they were a bit fidgety, but I kept them away from people, and tried to show them a good time, listening to live music, seeing real artists perform, and giving them an opportunity they may not have again – and some moaning minnie has to come and try to ruin it for us.

Overall we enjoyed the night, great to hear a real mix of Lu’s music from her career, and the volume was perfect. Thanks for coming back!

This little kiwi happy to be going to see Lucinda again – and so soon after the last time! (3 years is very quick turnaround for a gig in New Zealand). I did hang around the forums a fair bit before she last came to NZ, but have been absent (life taking over of course). It’s a bit annoying that they’ve chosen the same venue as last time – seated, with wowser ushers growling anyone who dares to stand, but beggars can’t be choosers 🙂

Also, our son ‘Jackson’ will be 10yo soon, and we’ve decided he can come see Lucinda with us – he’ll be most pleased….

Okay I like the term “grab-my-tits” song. A friend said he’d heard her music called shagging music – hubby and I quickly agreed 😯

Anyhow, I find it’s generally not the lyrics, but the music, rhythm and the way it’s sung much more sexy. Turn it up, lose my head in her voice, my body in tune with the beat – so here goes:

    1. Are you alright?
    2. Unsuffer Me
    3. Fruits of my labor
    4. Essence
    5. Knowing

So yeah, the slllooowww, moody songs. Sorry, I need to cool down now……… 😉

Just have to agree here with Ali – it is quite hard being downunder, trying to find out about any different music is very hard. I also had all the “Who?” when talking about going to the show, and blank looks when you say “sorta alt-country/country rock”, people down here have no idea what you mean (and as soon as you say country, you get looked at a little strangely 😆 ). So, yes, ignored is bad, but its what you get when you live in a little backwater, with a small population.

Trying to get a hold of any of her CD’s is very hard – it amazes me she was able to get such a reasonable fan base down here, but I think it was all word-of-mouth. This also influences your favourite Lucinda albums. For a long time my fave was the first one I heard – WWT. You cannot get a hold of anything older than this here unless you order for an overseas copy, and pay a fortune for it, and then generally you can only get the most recent releases. I’m currently thinking about using iTunes to get her 2 oldest albums – this is the easiest way for me, but it shows I haven’t had the opportunity to be influence whatsoever by her older music.

Also – cmoody4 – I feel the same way, I play Lucinda all the time, I don’t get bored. I think there might be something wrong with me, no other music feels the same anymore. Lately I’m enjoying SOW very much, but in all reality, every album has at least a couple of songs that I absolutely adore. So I think a favourite album will change depending on where I’m at and whats happening in my life.

So remember some of us don’t have the luxury to compare the old with the new! Not that I’d necessarily want to, because we like what we like don’t we. I just know that for me, I have never liked so much of one artist before.

Okay, so that is a great setlist to finish off a tour with! (And sounds like an interesting venue.)

BigDunc – my 7yo son would be extremely jealous of your grandson! He’s itching to go to a “Lucindia” concert, as he calls her, as we live thousands of miles away, it’s quite unlikely (unless she comes to NZ again???). I promised him that if I ever win the lottery, then the whole family can go to the US and go to a few Lucinda shows. His whole face lit up – the sweet innocence of a child, that doesn’t comprehend the likelihood of that happening 😀

Hubby (us from New Zealand) did make it to this show (courtesy of a local colleague), and had a great time. He loved the venue, and enjoyed the show – better than Auckland he said, the venue suited much better and better atmosphere. He also took a couple of cellphone videos to share with his poor family stuck back home, which was nice to see although the quality was pretty bad. He was quite close to the front, and when watching one of the videos, we saw a big cloud of smoke blow up onto the stage – aha! the mystery dope smoker 😆

Anyhow, his flying visit is over (Cincinnati is very hard to get to from our little corner of the world). Hubby was very impressed by the locals – couldn’t believe how incredibly friendly everyone is, and just generally nice people.

So unless we come into a helluva lot of money, theres not much chance of us turning up to a Lucinda show anytime soon, but I’ve enjoyed all the set lists and show reports. Maybe I’ll get another chance to comment soon 🙂

Have just said goodbye to hubby – he’s got his long journey to Cincinnati. He assures me he will be going to the Covington show. I’ve written all the details down for him. So – how rare would that be? Someone who saw the Auckland show, turning up to the Covington show. I’m still incredibly jealous, as he is also flying Business Class! (The differences when work pay the bill and not us). I think it will be interesting for him to go to a GA show, after the seated show we had in Auckland. Also, it is a very cold start to winter here in NZ, and it looks like the temperatures have been very warm over there – yet another reason to be jealous! Oh well, I wait to hear how it all goes, and let the lunatics (my lovely children) take over the asylum. 😆

howdy, just wondering does anyone know what the ticket situation is like for the Covington show? Hubby has a conference in Cincinnati AT THE RIGHT TIME(!), and he’s considering going to the Lu show there. But he probably doesn’t want to get a ticket too soon, unless his trip is cancelled (or trying to figure out who to send the tickets to)…. We’re the ones who were lucky enough to see her in our home country of New Zealand, so for him to score a work trip that coincides with a Lu show is pretty damn fantastic. I’m a teeny bit    But am insisting that he goes, if it was me I’d be there in a shot!

Looking back, that first album and show also started a shift in my thinking about music. It took something special to pierce my hand-me-down Anglophile indie rock snobbery and embrace that most parodied of pop music, country. But soon came the American alternative country movement which owed as much to the Beatles as Hank Williams. And Williams was no straight twang act, she continues to mix blues, gospel, and rock into her sound. And then there was her voice with its world-weary timbre.

This is so appropriate. Most of the Lu fans I know were all big punk followers in the 70’s, if you told them back then that they’d be listening to more country music than anything they would’ve had a good laugh 😆 It’s like any genre – you have to look a bit further than the fluff at the top, and also not worry about labels. I always thought the Lu comment about being “too rock for country, and too country for rock” a great message about how f**ked up the music industry is.

Anyhow – waiting patiently for Russell Baillie’s review of Friday night, maybe it’ll be in Monday’s paper….

    Just a few more comments…

Out of Touch – just Lu and Chet on stage

I Long For Your Kiss – Talked about her friend Duane Jarvis for a bit after. I could be wrong, but it appeared that this song may have been a set list change?

Unsuffer Me – was very very slow

    Motherless Children was solo

Long Way to the Top – Lu joining in on drums with Butch for a bit towards the end.

I was a little surprised when I counted the number of songs and realised it was 22. I know she’s played longer sets, and she did appear to be having a good time, but apart from the short encore I didn’t feel short-changed at all, the show was plenty long enough – we’d been there since 8pm and finished at 11.30pm, Lu on stage for 2 hours. We had no hiccups, no false starts, there were a couple of stalls in between songs, but nothing annoying. After hearing all about the lyric book – what the hell is the fuss? It’s so inconspicuous amongst all the other band equipment on stage.

PS – I’m very glad we got to hear Jackson
