What a great article – don’t find a lot of great music writing anymore. I cannot wait to hear this record tomorrow. Loved the writer’s description of Lu and Tom’s wedding night. That performance (along with Plan to Marry) is welded to my memory.

Love it too…it does what most really good videos do – offers a new perspective that makes you hear a song differently than you have before.

After reading the writeup on rs.com, I am curious what songs Lucinda tried doing videos to earlier…Pineola??

    Encore:

    Blessed

A long day for me and my wife ended great with the show…so nice to have a second show in relative near time in MN…

This was a long week for us, as a good friend and co-worker passed away on the 4th in a motorcycle accident. Very good man filled with optimism and humor. His funeral was Sunday afternoon, so we attended the service prior to the show. The concert was a great release…helped me take another step in dealing with our loss, and also gave us some release. For that I’m grateful.

I was (in equal parts) desperately needing and also hoping against Lu playing a couple of songs: 2 Kool or Lake Charles. Tidal wave effect during each chorus – the words are spot on I hope – but at the end it was so cathartic…left us feeling warm. Funny how events make other songs touch you differently too…Blessed and I Lost It in particular last night.

No more gloom – other notes/highlights:

Lucinda had a white cowgirl hat, black tank top with green shirt over, and a light blue scarf to match her nails.

We were in the 3rd row in front of Blake with my folks and my sister and her fiance. My mom and pop really liked it. I think my dad was really struck by how many different genres of music Lucinda takes on each show…but as my wife says, it’s just American music!

Jailhouse Tears was fun. A roadie had come out to tape what I thought was a new cue sheet by Blake, but it ended up being the lyrics. Lucinda indicated this was a tour debut, and you could see she was nervous how it would go (At the First Ave show to kick off Little Honey, I think it had 2-3 false starts). I think it ended up great. Best part was the interaction between the two. Blake really hammed it up, singing and gesturing right at Lu. Lu wouldn’t look at him, as if she didn’t want to break out and lose her focus.

I thought Buttercup and Essence rocked. So powerful. I also really dug the harmonies tonight by the band. Sometimes that’s easy to forget.

Towards the end of the main set, it appeared that lightning was heading our way, but it ended up being distant fireworks. Lucinda commented that they were happy to see them, as they were up in Canada during the holiday and missed out.

Freedy Johnston opened…big hit was Bad Reputation. We were towards the back of the theater in the shade when they started, and from a distance his bass player was a dead ringer for Gary Louris of the Jayhawks, and the guitarist looked like Paul Westerburg (when his shades were on). Alas – no.

Very nice new ampitheater…only thing missing was a view of the river.

We got absolutely pounded by rain on the way home as the humidity finally reached its breaking point. High winds and sideways downpours. A 90 minute drive took an extra 30-40 minutes as we had to slow down most of the drive back to MSP. Hope all attendees got home safe, and that the crew got most of their work done before the rain hit.

On the way out I recognized Tom chatting with a fan…but chickened out introducing myself. Very glad we decided to attend – it was just what we needed. Here’s to hoping First Ave. pops onto the itinerary this fall…

I’m excited for this show as well…feel lucky that Lucinda’s returning so soon after the Rochester gig, and am THRILLED we got another outdoor ampitheater for concerts closeby.

I got great seats, and am bringing some others with. My parents are coming to the show. Also, my sister Amanda is coming with her fiance Alex (all the way from Germany!)…he’s more of a Queen/prog rock guy, but I have no doubts seeing Lu live will open another door for him. I have told them that Kiss Like Your Kiss would be the perfect first song as a married couple!

    Here are my Top 5:

1 – Cold, Cold Heart – hands down the best cover of a Hank song…she makes one of his best songs her own.
    2 – Nothin’
    3 – Can’t Let Go
4 – Hard Time Killin’ Floor Blues
    5 – Positively 4th Street

Hard to beat 4th Street as a F@&k you song of choice when needed, and I love her version as much as Bob’s. I thought Lucinda’s writeup in RS about the tune was interesting. I had never thought about the song that specifically before. The idealist in me didn’t like reading that artists get jeolous of others breaking through…when you’re a fan and not in the business it just never occurs to you that would happen!

Quite a find LWJetta – appreciate the detective work…sad tale to say the least. Think it’s time to finally check out Blaze’s music!

Hey all…long time lurker in the forum, and have greatly appreciated the views and insight from you all. Now I’m finally speaking up to add some flavor to the Rochester gig!

My wife Andrea and I have been fans of Lucinda’s since hearing Drunken Angel on the radio senior year at college. We live 25 miles north of the Twin Cities and try to hit every show within range of MSP…we had tix for the first show at the Dakota, but given the weather and 2 of our 3 kids being sick, had to bail. So – we were very glad when this show popped up!

    On to the show:

The venue was very nice – a theater hall as opposed to a club like First Ave. Sound was great…crowd was very engaged albeit a bit quiet. Our seats were Row K – about 2-3 rows from Tom’s folks, who waved with joy when Lucinda called them out!…

It was also cool for Andrea (from Kasson, a small town 20 miles out of Rochester), as she danced ballet on that stage in high school.

Onto the show…Andrea’s fav is Crescent City as it reminds her of being young with her siblings…always great to hear “Everybody’s had a few…”

Lots of Car Wheels…I finally got to hear my favorite song, Jackson, live. She’s played it a time or two the last decade in MSP, but seemingly always the show I’ve missed. I loved it – her voice cracked ever so slightly with the first Jackson, and I immediately teared up. Show could have ended for me right then.

Lucinda told quite a bit about Drunken Angel – more than I have ever heard or read, and I think she said that she had never really told this before… She said Blaze had befriended an elderly gentlemen, whose son was stealing his welfare checks. One day Blaze was visiting his friend when the son came by. Blaze confronted him, they fought and he was shot. Lucinda then said that Blaze did a “dumb thing” and ran after him, and that he likely would have survived if not for that. I’d always kind of assumed it was a barroom brawl thing – more of a literal translation of the song- this angle really touched us. Needless to say the song rocked – Lu did lose her spot midway thru but they figured it and rocked it out.

Kiss Like Your Kiss was simply breathtaking. Every element of that song is perfect – very glad to hear it!
Everything off of Blessed fits the live show so well.

Get Right With God also really rocked…at the end they went into a double time with Lucinda chanting away and it became something of a rave….

Loved the band of course…David’s playing really stuck out tonight for me…as a hack guitar player I found myself very jealous of Blaze’s playing and his guitars. Would love to take that beautiful Gretsch off his hands he used just for Can’t Let Go.

Not much in the way of politial statements – no direct statements and no For What It’s Worth – not too surprising given Rochester (land of Mayo) leans right fiscally. I think she stopped herself once (before Concrete and Barbed Wire?), but at the end couldn’t resist and got in a good ol’ “Don’t Let the Bastards get you down!” Would guess that changes in Madison tonight.

Last – we both really liked Haley Bonar, the opener. She played solo, and her songs were simple at first blush yet surprised with dynamic as well. We bought her record after her set and are glad we did. Not a fan of comparisons, but her voice reminded me of Neko Case a bit. She can open for Lucinda anytime in my book.
