Sorry! She didn’t do any songs twice. I was only trying for the approximate order and totally going on memory, so I gladly endorse most corrections.
lucfan4everParticipantSorely missing Doug Pettibone! Did not want to write that because I was feeling guilty that I had been away from the forum so long and wasn’t prepared for it. Then I saw Doug was in town (DC) with Marianne Faithful last night or so. Lazy to ask here, but what happened? I know I should just research and it must be on the forum somewhere. Also wondering what happened to Inside Job, I thought he always posted the set list.
What I also missed was a duet. Maybe I got spoiled attending the NYC shows when all kinds of other musicians would show up, but Lu and Doug doing Jailhouse Tears also worked just fine for me. Since the show I bought the Steve Earle CD just to listen to “You’re Still Standing There,” my favorite (recorded w/Lu) duet. I also re-listened to the self titled and Sweet Old World cd’s to get my fill of hearing Lu very clearly. Rather than reliving the show in my mind, I needed to search out what i wanted to hear. Maybe that’s the best summary of the show I can offer.

It’s A Long Way To The Top (If You Wanna Rock and Roll)lucfan4everParticipantwe love lucinda here, both inside and outside the beltway, baltimore, Washington, Mclean…. But no shows anywhere, so like many others I hit and hit on the NYC show until I got tickets. It took me hours, and while I Love NY, it does cost a fortune, train tix, hotels, etc. I sure hope Lu has the 930 club and the Rams Head on her to do list for spring to make it up to us!
lucfan4everParticipantYou sound like such a well balanced guy, Ray. Nicely worded.
lucfan4everParticipantParker, CA have you hear NYC Sweet Old World yet to compare to LA? Just wondering before I hit the order button. I only saw self titled LW n NYC. Sweet Old World is usually my second fav anyway, so now debating whether NYC or LA version. Like the idea of new life in the old songs as I have everything except these LA/NYC cd’s and can’t see overdoing it by buying that many dups. l
lucfan4everParticipantParkerCA, was that the NYC or LA version?
lucfan4everParticipantSure we are all entitled to our opinions… that said, I went all the way to NYC to hear her do the self-titled album and enjoyed every second, start overs, chats, and guests included.
Lu was especially gracious, saying how pleased she was to hear David Bryne doing her song, David Johannson on stage with her, honoring Mary Chapin Carpenter for making Passionate Kisses famous, etc. She seemed to be really enjoying herself. I took the “oh darn how does this go” to be (my style of) femininity, after all she was dedicating this to her boyfriend for his birthday! Of course she wanted it to be perfect.
I was delighted she was on stage so much during the second set, after inferring Fionna Regan would be doing a set of his own when the show was first listed.
The highlight for me was Crescent City. I loved hearing the entire LW album as a set, it having been my favorite for so many years. Heard Honeybee the last three shows I’ve attended, liking it more each time, and NYC was the best, really high energy rocking. Looking for a Kiss and Jail House Tears were stand outs. The variety was truly a reflection of Lu’s music.
Yeah I’m a diehard fan. I like the roughness, the swing from hard to soft, the emotion of it all, from Side of the Road to You gave me gasoline. . Life– enjoy the intensity.
lucfan4everParticipantOne way of trying to splice this is: Does Lucinda sing “to” you or “for” you in those songs that just seem so from the female side– the women I know say she is singing for them, expressing their feelings. The few guys I’ve asked have been split.
I meant a natural fan is someone who likes her on their own, rather than because their significant other does, so they are at the concert.
On those “female” songs like Those Three Days, I Just Want to See You So Bad, Right in Time, Can’t Let Go, Still I long For Your Kiss, Learning How to Live, Come On, Wrap My Head, etc., does the song speak to you vs for you differ via gender?
Another aspect is so many of the male musicians who are this intensely creative have overdosed or end up pretty mellow. Like they got over the intensity of youth. Not saying Lucinda won’t now, esp. getting engaged and all that happy stuff. I think the lyrics and music are intense, but maybe that is just what I am bringing to it/putting in. In my world, women are more intense than men, more passionate about what they do. But possibly the male Lucinda fan has a greater intensity than the average (non-natural fan!) male.
Can’t say on the Indigo Girls. I’ve been to a few kd Lang concerts and always wondered why the audience has to be so demonstrative. You never see that kind of behavior at other shows.
lucfan4everParticipantthanks for the responses! I am especially in tune with Ray’s, the songs that appeal to me change with my mood and what is happening in my life and I love the sense of place. I can find a song that fits every occasion. And I agree with a lot of the responses of favorites, esp. Crescent City and Lake Charles.
The songs are so truthful, sometimes raw and emotional. Do men really want to hear that, either in person or second hand in a song? Although, when Lucinda’s singing, she is so there with you. Sorry to say the same old stereotype of stoic males and emotional females seems to still hold in my world. I think I get around enough, but, hey, do like the idea there is an alternate universe out there. No male I’ve ever asked (outside a concert) has been a fan, at least a serious one. Musical tastes are so varied, I don’t think this is that unusual or an indicator my circles are too constricted.
Some of the songs are “real life” (means they echo my experiences) love songs about longing. Doesn’t everyone want to be longed for/long for someone who has walked away? So to me these songs would appeal to the male fan because he wants to be longed for even if he did leave, while the female relates to the song because she is doing the longing. That is part of what I am trying to figure out.
A number of the songs are universal, and I think the same meaning appeals to both sexes. One guy I talked to at a show liked “Those Three Days” for the same reason I did- was that all that guy or girl wanted (we wanted more!)?! Am I Too Blue for You, Lake Charles, Crescent City and Mama You Sweet are a few of this type.
I’m also interested in whether the songs appeal to people who are more on the “blue” side- enjoy feeling blue. I like both the ups and downs of life, but hey if I’m down, I’ll wallow in it a bit. Just like I’ll really get pumped up when I’m happy (i.e., in anticipation of the NYC Lucinda Williams self titled show Aug 4th I have already prepped by listening to the album at least once a day for two weeks).
As to why I am interested in this subject, besides the above, I’m interested in motivation. Much as all the people here are true fans, we’re still a smallish group. How are we alike in regards to the larger universe? What brings us together here on a level other than we like the music (WHY)?
Some male musicians who show strong, real emotions (again true to life for me) Neil Young, John Hiatt, and Nils Lofgren. Some can even be pretty blue. But somehow the emotion just doesn’t appeal as strongly to me on a consistent basis like Lucinda.
lucfan4everParticipantSomeone please, what time is the curfew? I’m already psyched about traveling all the way to NYC to hear Lucinda Williams on October 4th and haven’t worked the hotel issue yet. Seriously jealous of those who can afford multiple nights, or those in LA who get to buy passes..
lucfan4everParticipantWe were all truly blessed Sunday night. Yes, that was my vocalizing for Lake Charles. Thanks to the other fans who echoed me! Lucinda was so sweet to promise (right away) to fit it in, save my voice and allay my fears. She also played Wrap My Head Around That, so I am still in raptures of gratitude.
It was a superb show. Lucinda was really playing to the fans- the prior Sunday at Wolf Trap was rather sedate, in fitting to the crowd there. Baltimore was rocking! The set lists were very different, a special reward for the true fans. Lucinda was so happy at both shows and so into it.
The duets with Louvin were such a contrast- his soft voice and Lu’s strong one blended so well. Pettibone was superb! Paul from LA, my recorded sequencing of the songs was different but you got them all.
Lucinda, Come Back as soon as you can!
July 25, 2007 at 2:57 pm in reply to: 7/22 Show at Wolftrap in Virginia – Interesting song choices #32905lucfan4everParticipantThe show at Wolf Trap was fantastic! I have the set list and will post it later. I have attended Lucinda concerts for the past ten years and this was the first show I’ve been to with such a wide range of songs including new songs beyond West. Not sure about the lyrics to Honey Bee, although the music was rocking! Doug Pettibone did a fine job. The trashing the band has gotten recently didn’t seem deserved Sunday night. Disappointed not to see Wrap My Head Around That in concert, but, hey, there is next Sunday at Rams Head! Lu was really interacting with the audience and taking requests, and seemed to really appreciate the “Lu for President” banner. She was sure smiling alot between songs, another first. I am still reliving the show on my drive to and from work every day anticipating next Sunday’s show.
lucfan4everParticipantThanks for the assistance! I haven’t had much luck with the translators. I took the text from the cd booklet. I like to interpret it as “It’s time for good music.”
I do know Let the good times roll, and of course, et toi!
One of the fun things about cajun music and dancing is guessing the intent of the lyrics from the sound of the melody (generally restricted to joyous, mellow or blue).
Next chance I get I’ll ask one of the cajun musicians and respond back.
lucfan4everParticipantLake Charles
Crescent City
Rolling Along
Something About What Happens When we Talk
You’re Still Standing There (w/Steve Earle)I see Crescent City on a lot of lists. Lu must have some more zydeco or cajun numbers out there I just can’t find! Help me out here…
