Happy birthday to Ms. Raitt, who is 64 today and once said,
“I never saw music in terms of men and women or black and white. There was just cool and uncool.”

Time for my annual post on this thread, CB…

WILL ROCKERS COMBINE TALENTS ON CANVAS?

For years, musicians have joined forces on numerous projects. Many have written and recorded songs together. Some have shared the same stage jamming out a few songs. Still others have teamed up at benefits supporting a common cause.

Now it looks like Bob Dylan and John Mellencamp may be heading into a new area of collaboration in the art world.

Mellencamp says he and Dylan want to do a painting together. That might be the first time two rocker stars have teamed up for such an endeavor.

Mellencamp made the comment during a press conference at the Howland Branch of The Butler Institute of American Art in Youngstown, Ohio. He was there for the opening of the first ever museum exhibit of his paintings.

Dylan is the reason he is putting his artwork on display, Mellencamp said.

“Bob stopped by the house and said what are you going to do with all these paintings? You should put them on display somewhere for people to see, said Mellencamp. ‘I responded, Why?’ Bob said, ‘People come out to see my work.’ I said, ‘That’s because it’s you. Why would anyone like to see these paintings?’ He said, ‘Well, I like ’em.”

“Does anyone really want to see them? There are great paintings in this world and I’m still learning.’ He goes, ‘Put ’em out.’ Bob’s really the one who talked me into it,” Mellencamp explained.

Dylan is currently working with metal sculpture to explore the concept of gates. But don’t look for Mellencamp to venture into that medium any time soon. “I have a tough enough time with a brush and canvas,” he said.

Graham Nash of Crosby, Stills and Nash and Ronnie Wood of The Rolling Stones have also displayed painting at The Butler Institute of American Art.

The Paintings Of John Mellencamp will travel to the Museum of Art-DeLand, Florida, where it will view from October 16, 2014 through January 4, 2015. Plans are being finalized for the exhibition to travel to additional museums.

Neil Young Benefit Concert to Be Streamed Live [NY Times]

Every October, Neil Young and his wife, Pegi, gather some of Mr. Young’s colleagues for two benefit concerts for the Bridge School, a nonprofit school in Hillsborough, Calif., that specializes in teaching students with physical and speech impairments. The shows have long attracted international attention for their starry lineups as well as for the cause they support, and in recent years the school has released CD and DVD compilations of some of the best performances.

This year the Saturday-evening show on Oct. 26 will be streamed live in a Webcast sponsored by Warner Bros. Records. The Webcast can be seen on the school’s YouTube channel (www.youtube.combridgebenefitconcert), which also includes clips from past concerts. (There is a repeat on Sunday, which will not be streamed).

Mr. Young always performs at the shows, which have been held annually since 1986 (with the sole exception of 1987) at the Shoreline Amphitheater in Mountain View, Calif., either on his own or with one of his bands – Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young, Crazy Horse and Buffalo Springfield. And he is always joined by a famous cast of colleagues – among them, over the years, Bob Dylan, Paul McCartney, Brian Wilson, David Bowie, Foo Fighters, Wilco, Counting Crows, Emmylou Harris, the Who, Pearl Jam and Sarah McLachlan.

This year’s lineup includes Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young, Queens of the Stone Age, Arcade Fire, My Morning Jacket, Jack Johnson, Elvis Costello, Diana Krall, Fun, Heart, and Jenny Lewis.
