Neil playing “A Day In The Life” at Farm Aid 2008. I was at this show…incredible set. 7:18 seconds long and an ending not to be missed as Neil tears off the strings on his guitar.

LafayetteParticipantYeah, Steve, it was a hearbreaker seeing JM way down on the list at # 5 😆
The following blurb may explain criteria used to determine best albums, but it is just my opinion. There are a few in the top that have political content, one of them being Mellencamp’s (although fourteen songs is an exaggeration) as explained here:
“John Mellencamp’s growling fatalism and T Bone Burnett’s scorched-blues production make this the darkest, most compelling Mellencamp album in years,” said Rolling Stone in the blurb accompanying its prestigious 50 Best Albums of 2008 listing. “It is also the perfect run-up to Election Day: Fourteen songs about a nation going broke and a generation on the ropes.”
The article also singled out “Troubled Land,” and especially its lines “Beware of those who want to harm you/And drag you down to a lower game/Just know the truth is coming” for sounding “like the Election Day we deserved.”
“Troubled Land” also came in at #48 in the magazine’s 100 Best Singles chart.
“This stark heartland rocker offers a clear-eyed view of Bush’s America,” extolled Rolling Stone, adding “but the ending feels like a benediction,” in reference to John’s lyric “Just know that truth is coming.”
I could be wrong, but that seems to be the direction they were taking in rating the Best Albums of the Year.
LafayetteParticipantRolling Stone announced their top 50 albums of the year for 2008.
“Little Honey” is #18!

LafayetteParticipant1) Shows that would have a chronological setlist like the second set of the first show in Mpls or the show in Madison 5 Neutral on chronological order. Takes the anticipation out of the show of hearing that “one” song, whatever it may be, being played if that one favorite record has been already “showcased” in the set.
2) Shows that would have split sets -with the first set being ballads etc, a break, and then the second set being rock (1-10) 3 Takes the audio interest out of the show.
3) Similar to number 2– in larger cities where we could do it or where the right venue exists–doing two nights, with the first night being the ballads etc and the second night more rock (1-10)4 Better than #2. Allows the fan to “choose” the music format but once again, not for me.
4) Closing the year with a return of the album shows -probably only in one city (1-10)10 I would be salivating over this. Unheard of for me with most artists, I know Lu has done it prior, but what an amazing gift for her fans (again).
5) Don’t change anything -I like the shows as they are. (1-10) 9 LC Pavilion, Columbus, OH worked for me!
In a different and more general category:
1) To offset the venues that charge Ticketmaster fees -we are considering offering those fees back as a credit at the merch table -does this have appeal (1-10)5 Neutral. I curse every time I see those TM charges, however, it doesn’t stop me from buying a ticket to whatever artist is touring that I want to see. I’d really rather see Lu keep the money and/or I would like to see measures implemented to nix scalpers .2) Being aware of the past fan club fiasco- does a fan club hold any appeal if it made sense and had value? (1-10) 9 I wasn’t a member of past fan club but joining one that is properly managed works for me! Some perks could include the special access to presale tickets, something worked out for fans if a show is GA, Lucinda meet and greets, band meet and greets, access to band sound check, a Lucinda or band member special access blog, access to members only picture gallery, to name a few
3) The possibility of being able to buy tickets before the general public -(possibly as part of a fan club?) (1-10) YES! See above.
4) More live releases -(possibly as part of a fan club?) (1-10)Absolutely
4a) Digital only (1-10)
4b) Prefer cd (1-10)10 I’m just old school.5) What cities have we missed? Cincinnati! Come to the midwest more!
6) And last but not least, what did I miss?–consider this the suggestion box. Do you feel radio interviews are beneficial? I love to listen to radio interviews. Have Lu stop in every now and then to radio stations that support her by spinning her music.
LafayetteParticipantOh, I missed this as well! Still, was fun to re-live it vicariously through the posts.
LafayetteParticipantNo offense taken. I hesitated posting the entire gallery but it was just sooooo easy to post the link and I like simple.
I know how many feel about Mr. Mellencamp in this forum. I let it roll but thanks Steve for feeling you needed to do a shout out for me.
I can handle facetious. I can even handle sarcasm. But, yes, I found Lu through Mr. Mellencamp. Actually, it was his cover of “Lafayette” on “Trouble No More.” I was doing back flips when she was announced as opener on his tour this past summer, because, for whatever reason, I never caught her live before . I saw her 5 times on this tour. I only wish I was in Berkeley (and I think LA) when Andy and Dane joined her and the band.
Yes, I am a Lu fan, too, not as involved as many of you are here, but a fan just the same. I don’t join many forums but felt compelled and drawn to this one. I love reading the discussions, and to everyone here, you are very lucky in the respect of set lists. Lu changes it up from show to show, even looks like she pulls some rarities out. If there is one complaint (and only one ;-0) that I have about Mr. Mellencamp, he hardly EVER does that. Once he has his set list tweaked, that’ s it.
My goal is to own and listen to ALL of Lu’s music and explore as much as I can. I find her and her words and music intriguing and I have Mr. Mellencamp to thank, more or less, for invariably steering me here.
LafayetteParticipantFairly new fan here. I originally was going to go to the Nashville show but chose the Columbus show as it was closer to home (didn’t have to spend as much on gas or hotel room). After the Columbus show, had it not been for the economy, I would have been driving to St. Louis and Chicago, no doubt about it.
Not knocking Buick 6, but is it possible prior opening acts helped increase attendance with their fan base?
LafayetteParticipantYes, I was at the show and I would be one of those rail huggers :D. I was right beside the sweet lady that insisted on enjoying Lu in her own way, which was holding onto that rail hard and bumping me consistently as her head bobbed back and forth from side to side through the first half of the show until I backed up a bit for about 10 minutes. She was too sweet for me to ask her to stop so I just dealt with it. It did stop, finally, when I didn’t return those 80’s bump moves.
Oh, and the fist fight that broke out during “Bone of Contention”, that was right behind me as well. The two young girls that were screaming in our ears up to Lu that they loved her. The song had such momentum and that fist fight was somewhat distracting. If those young ladies visit this board, peace, I know it was your passion for Lu that was behind the craziness. Either that or I’m just too d*mn old.
Aside from all that, I could not have picked a better night to go see Lu. It was amazing and very memorable to me on so many levels and I would put up with 2 young girls fighting and the bumping and grinding again to see her at that venue, you could tell she liked it that much.

Thanks, Tim. I kept getting distracted by the shimmering weight loss ads to right of copy as I worked my way through this mediocre review. Still, a partial setlist could be fathomed, “Bone of Contention” a nice surprise (maybe that was done solo again?). The name Pete Doherty was new to me vis-a-vis “Little Rock Star.” Every little angle on this great tour helps. Nashville, anyone?
No, “Bone of Contention” was not done solo. Lu did these songs as part of her encore. She announced she had a protest EP ready for release. She also did Buffalo Springfield’s “For What Its Worth” that had the entire crowd (it seemed) singing along. It gave me goosebumps. Very spiritual.
I’m not sure where this critic was coming from. The show did NOT have a lull in it whatsoever from beginning to end. Lucinda loved that venue, she said it several times, and she was feeding off the energy of a GA show. It showed. The sound was fantastic. Perfect. I even heard sound check standing outside the doors as I stood in line, that was incredible as well, and that was standing from outside.
LafayetteParticipantThis review from Belfast Telegraph only garnered 2 stars. There is a comments section.

Monday, 13 October 2008With last year’s West, Lucinda Williams perhaps reached the high water mark of her career thus far, charting romantic disaster and bereavement with an unflinching eye and a big heart, and still finding room for her lustful swagger.
On Little Honey, however, the tide appears to be ebbing somewhat, judging by the plethora of glum, dull songs which bring little insight or relief to their subjects. “Little Rock Star” is a leaden rocker cautioning some unnamed star about “buying more fame by cashing your chips in”, “Well Well Well” a raggedy back-porch country-rocker about bad luck, “Circles & X’s” a desolate recognition that a relationship is over, and “Jailhouse Tears” a lazily rendered duet with Elvis Costello. “Knowing” is slightly better, while “It’s a Long Way to the Top” falls back on that least excusable of complaints, the hardship of the rock’n’roll life. By far the best songs are those her band Buick 6 inhabit most intimately, with Williams musing upon what to expect in the afterlife in “Heaven Blues”, and offering a tribute to some unrecognised genius in “Rarity” over a Lambchop-esque watercolour tinted with poignant horns, vibes and organ: “They’ll say you’re a rarity, and sleep in your bed/And strangle your purity, and leave you for dead”.
Pick of the Album: ‘Rarity’, ‘Heaven Blues’, ‘Knowing’
LafayetteParticipantI just heard “Tears Of Joy” on the local NPR station I listen to on a consistent basis while at home. They have also played “Real Love” as well as “Long Way To The Top.”
They also featured her, according to their playlist, on a show called “Wednesday Premieres” ( I missed this)playing “Well, well, well” and “Honey Bee.” They have spun new songs from “Little Honey” 19 times since August 22, not including spins from previous records. Do you see where I’m going with this?
Huge radio support and years ( I’m almost certain) since she headlined a show here in Cincinnati. How about it?
LafayetteParticipantI heard “Honey Bee” this afternoon on the NPR station I listen to.
Rockin’.
LafayetteParticipantLove hearing stories like this. Congrats!
