18) He’s God – “I learned this from a guy named Blind Pearly Brown – a blind preacher street singer – my dad took me to see when I was 6 years old living in Macon, Georgia. My first musical influence I can remember. You can find his music out there if you look.”
“Sending this out to Christopher Hayseed Wyant; he wrote one of my favorite songs – ‘I got a God-shaped hole in my soul’.”
“I used to, in the heyday of the feminist movement, used to say ‘She’s God’.”
I was doing some research on this song while it is uploading on YT and came across some interesting (to me) FYI. I love the expanse of Lucinda’s musical influences. ..
Here is some info on Blind Pearly Brown:

I found Hayseed’s website, where Lu is mentioned, along with a photo of her with Hayseed. Miller Williams is mentioned as well on the home page, a testimonial about Hayseed. I wish Hayseed would have made an appearance, especially with what seems as a mutual admiration.

“Hayseed’s music is roots music. Not from just one tree but a whole grove: bluegrass, old-time, country, gospel, folk, rock, soul…”

ParticipantI was very happy to hear “Port Arthur” performed in Nelsonville on Saturday. I was in Cleveland the night Lu originally performed this song, finishing the lyrics minutes before she stepped on the stage. That night she hadn’t even come up with a title, thinking at first she would call it “Difficult Child.” She later changed it to “Port Arthur.”
This songs tugs at my heartstrings.

ParticipantIt doesn’t even deserve half assed. Terrible review. Gee, could they have not expanded a little more on the record?

ParticipantI called my favorite NPR station today, you know, the one I gush about all the time, to let my favorite music host know he missed an Over The Rhine appearance in Btown. He thought it was very cool, and of course, true to form, got on the air and chatted up the OTR appearance with Lu. He played an OTR song followed by a Steve Earle song, and then several songs later, he played “Changed The Locks” but I missed it as I was in and out running errands. Music playlists are very helpful on that score.
Now, I’m hoping to hear a “Blessed” song tomorrow. 33 minutes until it’s official. Happy Early “Blessed” release day!

now that’s what I’m talking about!
It’s the little things… 😀
I might also add she is looking radiant. Younger than her 58 years.

ParticipantWelcome, Blake! I’ve been remiss in keeping up with the Lu boards this past week and just found out you started a thread to introduce yourself. So cool. Unfortunately, I don’t think I will be able to catch you live unless some summer shows are scheduled and work out for me. I suppose I will have to live vicariously through Youtube performances. Val McCallum, singing your praises on facebook, posted this scorcher from the Feb 14 show at The Bardot. Following is his comment he posted after putting up the link to this song. Wow, you truly must be special. 6 exclamation points 😆 ” Blake Mills on slide guitar….My new fave !!!!!!”
Again, welcome! Can’t wait to see you kill it with Lu and the boys.

ParticipantSuch a pleasant surprise to see OTR make a guest appearance with Lu. She loves them and knowing that made it extra special.
I was able to tape “Undamned,” ever so nonchanlantly as we were instructed not to tape or take photos. The lights, from viewing on my camera, have Lu washed out somewhat with spotlight, however, I will video up as soon as I catch up from 2 wonderful nights of Lu shows and 3 days and 3 wonderful nights spending with friends. I have a lot of video from the Nelsonville show.

ParticipantI went to Bloomington show on Friday night and this show as well. Back to back nights. The one thing I truly love are the change in setlists, not a song or two, but MANY changes to the setlist. So cool. I loved hearing “Port Arthur” as I heard it the night she sang it for the first time at the Joplin tribute. Her voice was buttery smooth. I’m very happy I was able to catch her solo
BTW…Lu looked amazing. She was dressed in a black/white/blue checked shirt, leather jacket, jeans, studded belt, black boots. I hope I look as hip as she does when I turn 58, and that’s just around the corner for me.
