Being a fairly new Lu fan, I want to weigh in. I have been listening to Lu for about the past three years and saw my first show this year. Granted she may not be the GREATEST live performer, but her songwriting and the raw emotion in her voice is unbelievable.
I was once a performer and I have read about Lu being more nervous in her earlier performing days. I think having the lyric book on stage with her is like a comfort. That’s how I would feel about it if I were her. And damn. She’s 54 and tours like crazy. I’d need a drink or two and that lyric book to remember.
She used the lyric book for about the first ten minutes at the show in Memphis. It was always turned to the current song but she didn’t need it. I have become such a fan that I’m headed to NYC to see her.
Peace Love and Revolution, LU!
kyle_tstoneParticipantI was on the front row in the center. wish everyone could have experienced that show from my place….
kyle_tstoneParticipantI live in North Mississippi but grew up in South Mississippi near Louisiana. Currently, I live 10 minutes outside of Tupelo, not too terribly far from Greenville. And have been to Birmingham, Memphis, Lake Charles, Lafayette, New Orleans, etc.
kyle_tstoneParticipantI’m heading up from Mississippi to NYC to catch all of the Lu shows. I can’t wait.
When she played Memphis, she coughed during the first three songs and stopped playing. We all went wild because it made her so real. She promised to make it up to us and played well past curfew. The show was unbelievable closing out the show with Carrie Rodriquez, Susan Marshall and Alvin Youngblood Hart joining her for an awesome jam session. It was nice for Lu to basically say, “Screw the curfew!”
kyle_tstoneParticipantI’m a guy and LOVE Lucinda. I listen to her albums over and over. No matter what mood I am in, I can always find something of hers that works.
I prefer female singers/songwriters to male singers/songwriters. Lucinda has a raw emotion that comes through in every song. Of course, I have favorite songs and then some not so favorite songs.
And depending on the song, I believe Lucinda sings for me and sings to me. Come On is a song where she is singing for me. Learning How to Live is Lucinda singing to me. I think she sings more for me than to me. Regardless, it sends shivers up my spine every time she begins singing…
