illiminate
illuminate or eliminate? ❓
illbeyouParticipantI, too, would like to know which day. I hope it’s the same day as Pearl Jam (Friday). That’s when I plan to go.
illbeyouParticipantI heard “Change the Locks” playing in the background in a bar scene on the HBO show “Eastbound and Down” recently.
illbeyouParticipantAs an adult in an adult-like forum, I really am fascinated when other adults use “emoticons (all the smiley faces, etc)” along with other OMG-type/texting terminology to express ideas. Although I might be fascinated, such reflections are valuable as they stand. Simply that.
Bombastic? 😉
illbeyouParticipantNow TonyG – don’t be bombastic. 😈
illbeyouParticipantWell done, young Grasshoppers. Well done, indeed. Yes, bombastic is a word that is powerful and you are wise to capture its essence and presence. Now, use the force, young Luke, and look around you. All things are not as they sound. As once was spoken, be careful when one’s BS-meter goes awry. Bee especially careful for all things that look sweet are not honey-sweet. Be(e) cautious of the man who protest to much… (notice no smiley-faces inserted here)
bombastic and condescending
illbeyouParticipantGood sh_t TO! I don’t think your being bombastic. Only one poster here seems to fit that description.
bom·bas·tic
adjective
marked by or given to bombast : pompous , overblownillbeyouParticipantThe discussion got ridiculous, didn’t it?
illbeyouParticipantDim – You are condescending and arrogant. Your posts prove that. Calling other fans “cheerleaders”, “rabid”, and “fanatical” is condescending.(Don’t you agree?) Trying to come off as a superior fan is arrogant. (yes, that is what you are doing.) I am going to join stevarino in warning others about your negativity. There’s a guy on the Tom Petty Messageboard who posts messages like yours. He manages to get everybody riled up, too. I’m done responding to you. I encourage everyone else to follow suit. Maybe you’ll go away.
PB – you told me what your favorite show and concert are, but you didn’t say what makes them stand apart from her latest work. How was your favorite show different that Sunday night at the Fillmore? For that matter, how was it different the her last few times at the Fillmore? I must have missed some exceptional tours in her early years, because I have seen some great shows since I became a fan. I became a casual fan upon hearing Car Wheels, but my fondness and respect for her as a musician came after seeing her live.
Explain this “decline” you write about. Do you think Lucinda is doing more than drinking and smoking? You put “recreational” in quotes like you are intentionally understating the severity. The dead rockers you mentioned were all into more than “recreational” drugs, correct?
illbeyouParticipantPB and DiM –
I was at Lucinda’s show at the Fillmore on Sunday night and watched a great performance. I never saw anything that I thought was Lucinda “going through the motions”. I have only been a fan of Lucinda’s for the past 8 or 9 years, so maybe I don’t have the proper point of reference to be so negatively critical of her live performances, but I have absolutely enjoyed the 5 live performances I have seen.I am, at this moment, watching her 1989 ACL dvd. IMHO she is just as good a performer now (if not better) as she was then. I am not seeing anything that would make anyone say, “her shows have turned into a grind, her sound saturated, and her spirit, tired.” It’s not like she used to be more animated. She simply stands in front of the mic and puts all of her passion and intensity into her beautiful voice – then and now. For anyone out there who might be reading these previous posts and deciding not to see Lucinda live – her spirit is anything but tired!
My point of reference is much different, I guess. My favorite artist is Tom Petty. I have seen him on every tour since 1982. I have seen some great shows in 26 years, but lately all he plays are his greatest hits. His shows have become predictable and boring. If it wasn’t for him sharing the stage with Steve Winwood this past tour, I would not have spent my money to see the same old setlist. I guess my point here is that I know what it’s like to watch a performer phone it in. I have not seen Lucinda do that.
Lucinda’s shows are so good partly because she is so unpredictable. For her to play 2 shows at the Fillmore and play 2 completely different setlists, is commendable. She had to figure that some people in the audience would attend both shows. I just wish I could have. I wish I could have seen “Circles and X’s”.
PB and Dim – please tell us about how your favorite show and record are so much better than her latest shows and records and why you think Lu is so terrible now. What specifically did she used to do that she no longer does?
And DiM – try not to be so condescending. 😈 This is the second time I have read a post from you where you have supported a negative opinion of a show that you didn’t see and dismissed those who might disagree with you.Big “L”, little “u”, Lu, Lu! (cheerleading reference from a “rabid” fan – see previous response to Dim post)
illbeyouParticipantMy preferences:
For 1-5:
5) Don’t change anything -I like the shows as they are. (10)In a different and more general category:
1) To offset the venues that charge Ticketmaster fees -we are considering offering those fees back as a credit at the merch table -does this have appeal (8)2) Being aware of the past fan club fiasco- does a fan club hold any appeal if it made sense and had value? (1)
3) The possibility of being able to buy tickets before the general public -(possibly as part of a fan club?) (10)
4) More live releases -(possibly as part of a fan club?) (10)
4a) Digital only (1)
4b) Prefer cd (10)illbeyouParticipantDavid –
You are, of course, entitled to your opinion. You bring the perspective of a long-time fan, but I think you changed the tone of this discussion when you wrote:“Unfortunately, this forum has its fair share of fanatatical posters who see LW as “the best show on Earth” without putting too much critical thought into their observations yet are very emotive regarding her song choices and performance/vocal qualities.”
“Just be ready for the occassional rabid LW fan to take one’s venting out of context, Howa. That’s a common behavior of a fanatic–go bombastic on a balanced perspective or vent.”
When I called you on it, you inferred that I was hostile, bombastic, and confrontational.
I have been visiting this forum for a few years now, and, except for the lyric book discussion, have never run across any discussion that was mean-spirited or confrontational. Please give examples.
You wrote in your latest post:
“Sure, I am not a “fan” (why the quotes?) who visits this site who has been listening to her new records and is absolutely in love with her sound and setlists.”But then you write:
“I’m not taking jabs at anyone…”Isn’t that exactly what you did?
illbeyouParticipantTom –
Tell Lu that I brought 2 new fans with me to the show in Sac and they’re hooked. They’ll be coming with me to the Fillmore.…and we want to hear Changed the Locks!
illbeyouParticipantDavidinmain-
You fired the first hostile shot:
“Just be ready for the occassional rabid LW fan to take one’s venting out of context, Howa. That’s a common behavior of a fanatic–go bombastic on a balanced perspective or vent.”(rabies – the source of the word rabid)
I was trying to be funny, not mean-spirited or confrontational.
illbeyouParticipantDavidinMaine-
Which fanatatical LW poster infected with rabies went bombastic?
Stoger –
If Wishes Were Horses was great! And it fit David Byrne’s criteria: It’s on the new album, the crowd was pleased, and she wrote it more than 25 years ago.
