frank8184Participant
A little out of the loop lately. Who’s playing with her on the new CD? With her at the SXSW show? Thanks!!
frank8184ParticipantWednesday’s show in KC was terrific!
The venue turned out to be perfect, with lots of standing room on the floor (no chairs), which was pretty much filled by the end of the evening. The balcony provided a great view of the stage and was comfortably filled. The crowd was really into it the whole evening with Buick 6 getting it going early; Chet and Butch kicked some serious ass on their percussion duet!
Lu came out strong and never appeared to look anything but engaged and happy; she commented the tour’s end was around the corner, which had them all relaxed. (When Mama’s happy, everybody is happy!) She played much of the evening on her Gibson, which set the stage for a number of older tunes. (I’ll be happy to see a set list to see if it confirms my observation.) Her voice was incredible and, in my estimation, perfectly balanced with the band.
And the band…what a band! Dave and Butch are just an amazing rhythm section. They are so solid! But they play so well in the context on the melody and lyrics, too. What a joy to watch and listen to.
Chet did a great job on the guitar, mainly playing rhythm, but he also played several smoking leads. He played mandolin on a number of tunes and dropped in some great harp solos. He could probably make a pretty decent living playing drums, too, if that were his inclination.
And I was terribly pleased to hear how well Eric fit in! He played some great stuff and added a little more straight ahead rock to the sound without losing sight of Lu’s country roots. I’ll always appreciate Doug’s contribution to Lu’s music, but, in my humble opinion, there was no drop off in the quality of lead work with Eric stepping in!
I hope she gets this way again soon. It was a good of show as I’ve seen her and her friends put on!

frank8184ParticipantSounds like a great show in Columbia!
Hope any folks who went to the Royals had a good time. It’s a beautiful stadium, and the crowd, I’m sure, appreciated the Royals’ victory.
Lu and Doug played Harrah’s in Feb. 2006, I believe. It was the second time I’d seen her, the first without a band. It was nice, kind of like having them in your living room!
It’s a casino, no doubt, but there’s a good club atmosphere around the edges with seating on the floor; don’t suspect there will be much standing down there.
I’m very excited about what the set list looks like. I really like the way she’s mixing them up, but certainly I’m hoping for Essence, Right in Time and Rightously. I’m intersted in what Eric will bring to to the table; I’ve been a huge Doug fan, particularly since I saw them in St. Louis in 07 and KC last fall.
I always appreciate those of you traveling with the band and posting the set lists and your observations. I never got to follow the Dead around for a summer, but I’m sure you folks out on the road are having a great time!
If you’re looking for something to fill your day, the WWI museum is quite impressive and not too far from where your staying. (I stay there on occasion when I’m partying at Knuclehead’s. It’s a cool bar a couple of miles from the motel. Last show I saw there was Sonny Landreth; it was killer!)
Looking forward to the show!

frank8184ParticipantI really appreciate the update with the link. I’ll be catching them in KC at Harrah’s. The second time I saw Lu was at Harrah’s in Feb. 06, I believe. It was just Lu and Doug; tremendous show. I’ll be looking forward to hearing Greg, but there’s no doubt a lot of what I’ve enjoyed about Lu’s music the last several years has been the interplay between her lyrics and delivery and Doug’s playing.
frank8184ParticipantSo who’s in the band these days? I’ve very much appreciated Doug’s skill and taste; I’ll miss his contribution to Lu’s sound. But players move on, so I’m sure the new band will continue to be a great compliment to Lu’s songs.
frank8184ParticipantA couple of comments. Saw Lu at the Uptown in KC last Monday and thoroughly enjoyed it, as I’ve mentioned before. There was no standing GA. The energy was good, but the standing GA would have set the energy level even higher.
I saw her in July 07 in St. Louis at the Pagent, and that was an incredible venue. Seemed like everyone got what they wanted, including the bar! 🙂
The first time I saw Lu was at the Beaumont, a club in KC, in fall 04(?) and that was really the best of them all because of the intimacy. (I really didn’t realize what I treat I was getting until after the fact!)
I’m just glad she likes to travel because I’ll go see here regardless of the venue! Fortunately, the money has not been the constraining factor for me.
I may be a minority voice, but I think the rock edge that Lu and the band have honed is PERFECT, a really great blend that continues to expand what we so loosely define as rock and roll, some 50 years after Bill Haley and the Comets!
frank8184ParticipantAll I can say is WOW!!
I admire and appreciate everything that went into the Webcast last night. But I have to say, once again, Lu and the band are the most ambitious and creative act on the road today. To play an entire album, then come back with the “greatest hits” set was a brilliant idea and incredible fun to listen to, in spite of the audio problems.
I can only imagine the fun they have when they hit a home run like that. It must be incredibly satisfying to be part of a band that is so talented, creative and never seems to settle for “calling it in,” but always pushing the envelope.
It takes Lu’s songs to set the context, but the jams last night were straight from the Dead’s tradition of taking chances and see where it goes, and it is almost always is fantastic.
Again kudos to everyone who made it happen!
tom
frank8184ParticipantNo, I didn’t. Thanks for the info.
frank8184ParticipantHey, thanks for the update! Beatle Bob is a KC/Lawrence fixture as well. Last saw him at the Wakarusa Festival a year or two ago.
Fine set list, but I’m always real partial to Essence. Change the locks seems to be showing up regularly.
I’ll be splitting work and heading for KC soon. It’s going to be great rockin’ with Lu and the Boys! Last time I saw her in KC was at the Beaumont Club, which was a great place to see her.
frank8184ParticipantI’d be pleased as punch to see that show in KC Monday!
frank8184ParticipantAnd I would have to add picking a favorite Lucinda song is impossible for me. I am in band, and we do seven or so covers: Essence, Rightously, Come on, Metal firecracker, Right in Time, Learning to Live W/o you, I Lost It and Drunken Angel. I can’t even pick my favorite among those eight; depends on what lind of mood I’m in. Essence almost always gets the most favorable repsonse, but Right in Time scores big as well.
Okay, I’m going with Essence! The live version is absolute, total rock and roll mixed with the best of lyrics and delivery!
frank8184ParticipantI’ve been on the Lucinda train since 2000, but it is her ability to change and stay relevant that allows me to think she’s one of the most creative artists still working. So many are living on successes of decades ago, and Lucinda just keeps coming up with amazing stuff. I attribute a lot of that to her willingness to share the limelight with Doug. He’s a MONSTER guitar player. Between her lyrics and melodies and his muscical, technological and performance expertise, they have created the most refreshing, consisten tmusic over the last five years than anyone recording today!
