You know, to keep costs down, I order most of this stuff online from the wealthy neighboring county’s library. That way I can try before I buy. This has had a karmic payoff since I bought my needing county’s library a ton of blues cd’s. I think I got the better of the deal since I learned about so many great artists.
Worth the price of admission:
Vera Ward Hall

The most beautiful thing I’ve ever heard? Maybe….
Stick around for “Poor Lazurus” if you can.Lavern Sings Bessie

OMG! One of my favorite singers covering one of my favorite singers!eastside_eddieParticipantDelving into the matter further, it’s just one track, “At Last”. It’s on “Etta James – The Chess Box”.
eastside_eddieParticipantOkay, I didn’t mention this BUT, look at the photos. *Ed grabs his scratchy CD* Etta proudly sports an Ace bandage on her wrist. The clock reads 2:10. The crowd is smoking and appears rather well-lubricated (she uses them as back-up singers all night). The suit at stage-left appears very bored and obsessed with his note pad. A seemingly 12-year-old and someday famous David Walker plays a juicy-to-the-bone Fender Jag. Vonzell Cooper plays an out of tune piano. And then there’s the music. Look at the writing credits. She covers almost everybody. Yup, #1 desert island disc. By the way, I’m usually not much of an Etta fan. Aretha can sing me to sleep any night. Also, for the truly obsessed, there are a few more tracks in a box set I have.
eastside_eddieParticipantEtta James “Rocks the House”. She is completely off the chain. I’ve got a ton of blues albums and this one blows them all away. It’s also my absolute favorite album.
Lu’s “Live at the Fillmore”….whoever picked the sequence of the songs is an absolute genius. Putting the tears-in-your-beers songs first really works for me.
eastside_eddieParticipantThanks for the welcome.
eastside_eddieParticipantI really enjoyed last night’s 9:30 show. Good, good stuff. Val was completely on fire. He’s very active and has an edgy tone. Reminded me of Albert Collins.
