Also, please make sure that she gets onstage on time so she doesn’t have to complain that “I’d like to keep playing but there’s a curfew here.”
Amen. Let me be clear – I’ve seen Lucinda in concert 7 times and each time I felt that the length of her show was reasonable; all of them were in the 2-hour range, give or take. While I’d love to witness one of her mythical 4-hour shows, I recognize that those kinds of performances are a lot to ask of an artist. I’ll take any reasonable show length if it ends because Lucinda wants to end her performance. However, I find curfews to be annoying, and incredibly so when Lucinda comes onstage late. At several of the shows I’ve attended, it was clear that the show ended only because the curfew had been reached. It’s frustrating as an audience member to know that once the clock strikes 11, the show’s over, regardless of Lucinda’s mood or her own desire; I would imagine it’s equally frustrating to a performer who is “in the zone” to have to curtail a performance so suddenly. Obviously I can’t speak for Lucinda, but I’ve gotten the impression before that she’d have been happy to keep playing if it weren’t for the curfew. Again, this isn’t about the shows being too short or Lucinda being obligated to perform for X amount of time. I just think that curfews are frustratingly arbitrary and it would be to the benefit of all to find a way around them. Either start the show earlier or find venues with later curfews or none at all.
Disco StuParticipantI haven’t decided yet. If the third disc was merely a released version of outtakes/live performances that I already have on bootleg, I wouldn’t…but Columbia was pretty shrewd about how to spread the tracks among the 3 discs. It doesn’t help that the outtakes are intriguing by virtue of the fact that they’ve never circulated, and weren’t even confirmed to exist until very recently. I wouldn’t even consider paying what amounts to ~$10 a track for material that I either have on bootleg or is very, very similar to what I have (more studio outtakes from the ’60s, for example).
I don’t know. I may see what happens after it’s released and go from there. Bottom line, I really want to hear all of the outtakes one way or another. I don’t generally condone stealing music, but IMO the way that Columbia has decided to put this together borders on extortion. I’ll be really interested to see how many of these “deluxe” editions they sell. On another board, someone brought up the point that if they simply made it available only as a 3-disc set, but at a relatively high yet reasonable price of $50-60, they’d probably make a lot more money overall. Any casual fan (if any of those even care about outtakes from the last couple decades) is obviously going for the 2-disc set, and the price of the deluxe set is enough to dissuade some more serious fans who otherwise would jump at the chance to get the 3rd disc.
If Lucinda’s people ever put together something like this…please, please, please be reasonable about availability and pricing, as you were with the LA and NY sets. They weren’t cheap, but they were very fairly priced. )LOL…can you imagine the outcry here if they’d been packaged like the Dylan release? “Okay, you can either get the Car Wheels, Essence, and World Without Tears nights for $40, or a deluxe edition with all 5 nights for $200.”)
Disco StuParticipantI’ll be looking forward to it. I’m slightly disappointed that only three songs (Circles and X’s, If Wishes Were Horses, and Plan To Marry) will be 100% new to me, but that’s my fault for attending shows and listening to bootlegs. 😉 I’m very interested to hear Well Well Well w/Charlie Louvin and Jim Lauderdale, and also interested to hear how Jailhouse Tears turns out. I like Elvis Costello and have a lot of respect for him, but I can’t help thinking that I’d have picked a lot of other singers above him for that particular song.
Disco StuParticipantThat would be great. I’d particularly like it if it was material from the ’80s and ’90s; don’t get me wrong, I like the new stuff too, but seems like we’re getting plenty of that in concert and on new albums.
What do you think about the pricing for the Dylan Bootleg Series, ParkerCA (ie, how you can only get the third disc if you buy the full deluxe set for over $100 more)? I think it stinks.
Disco StuParticipantThanks for the setlist and reviews. It’s interesting that the first few songs were completely different from the night before, but then the rest was nearly identical. What did Circles and X’s sound like?
Disco StuParticipantAwesome report, Stu. I hereby nominate you for the Bill Pagel Award!
I can’t in good conscience accept that award until I start posting setlists minutes after shows end, and also detailing the instruments played by band members on each song. 😉 Seriously, though, mostly because I appreciate the wealth of setlist information available on Dylan, I do my best to post setlists of other artists’ shows I attend…I’d probably write them down for myself anyway. Writing reviews is fun, too…thanks for the encouragement. It’s been a while since I sat down and went into detail like this.
stoger, thanks for filling in details. You know, now that you mention it I remember hearing the title of Little Rock Star before last night, and I was thinking to myself that I didn’t think it had been leaked in any of the studio discussions…I guess in the back of my mind I remembered it from the Dylan tribute. Oh well, it was new to me. 🙂 Yes, the ticket stubs were nice, but even nicer was buying tickets through the iowatix.com website – being able to choose my seat from what was still available, rather than requesting “best available” and having to debate whether to take what pops up or try for something better was great.
Disco StuParticipantOh boy…this is definitely a tough one. I’d probably go with Cold, Cold Heart (probably the first Lucinda song I ever heard when I got the Timeless album); I was actually introduced to that song through Norah Jones’ cover of it, right before I got into Hank Williams, and while I still love her version (and of course his), Lucinda’s really adds something to the song. I love songs where you can appreciate multiple covers because they all add something unique of their own.
I also like Gentle on My Mind, and Positively 4th Street from the early ’90s.
Disco StuParticipantHey, thanks so much for the heads-up…I glanced at your post last week and assumed that it was a West Coast show or something. Guess that shows what happens when you assume…this is the only show that I’ll be able to make (can’t take the day off work to make the trek up north July 2, don’t really care to go to Summerfest or the Chicago show where she’s opening for Mellencamp), and I don’t mind the 3-hour drive to get to this show at all.
Plus, I was able to snag a front-row seat! All the way on the right side of the theatre, but still fine by me. Anyone else interested in this show, there are still decent orchestra seats left.
Thanks again!
Disco StuParticipantI hadn’t heard about that article before, but it doesn’t seem to be easily available online. A shame, because it sounds intriguing even if Buford crossed the line.
As for the extra verse to Pineola…I’ve heard it too (I think it’s on a radio show bootleg from 1985) and it’s interesting, but I think in the end the song is stronger without it. It’s too personal, maybe, and something about the specificity of it takes away from the rest of the song. As it is on Sweet Old World and the way she performs it now, it’s just about a perfect song…not a wasted or superfluous lyric to be found. I think it’s a great example of the uniqueness of Lucinda’s songwriting, and one I point to when I’m telling someone why she’s one of my favorite artists.Disco StuParticipant7/2 –Bayfield, Wisc
Argh…right state, wrong end. 😉 Of course, there’s Summerfest, but I don’t know if I’m up for that.
Disco StuParticipantWell, I’ll on vacation in northern Wisconsin on the date of the Chicago show, which would be the easiest for me to make it to. Oh well…I’m not sure I’m really interested in seeing Mellencamp – nothing against him, mind you, but my concert budget is a little limited this year and I’d rather see a full Lucinda set. I’ll be very interested to hear about another tour later in the year…the Pabst would be a great place for her to come back to. Or better yet, how about the Barrymore in Madison again?
Disco StuParticipantWow, I’d love to hear her sing Meet Me in the Morning. I’d really love for her to tour with Dylan again. Since it seems that in the past few years he’s preferred a co-headliner, which has been great in some cases (Willie Nelson, Merle Haggard, The Raconteurs, Elvis Costello) and not so great in others (Kings of Leon, Foo Fighters), I would absolutely love it if Lucinda toured with him. It would make it easier to justify going to more shows, too, since it would really be two shows for the price of one. 😀
As far as potential duets, I’m not picky, I’d love to hear them sing anything together. It would be particularly cool if they did a duet of one of her songs, since it’s so rare that he does a cover anymore. (And unfortunately, so rare that he does a duet at all, despite all of the openers and co-headliners).
Disco StuParticipantWow, thanks for the details! I’d forgotten all about Real Love…I’m glad she hasn’t. 🙂
It’ll also be really interesting to hear what some of these songs sound like after so much time has passed since she started performing them live. The only thing I’m bummed about is that, as with West, not many of the songs will be new to me since I’ve heard them already (what a complaint, huh? 😉 ). This is a completely different experience from, say, awaiting the new Bob Dylan album where hell would freeze over before he’d perform an unreleased song in concert. It’s really nice that Lucinda’s more comfortable with trying out new songs in her shows.Disco StuParticipantThanks for the update, Inside Job. It’s great to hear that the sessions are going well. I think using the same band that’s been supporting her is going to make for a very good album.
I don’t know off the top of my head exactly how many new songs she’s performed in the last couple of years that didn’t make it onto West – Jailhouse Tears and Tears of Joy are a couple of the standouts IMO – but I imagine there will be at least a few tracks on the new album that she hasn’t performed live yet. So far, has she recorded some new ones that none of us have heard yet, or has she been working mostly on the songs she’s performed live?
Disco StuParticipantBob Dylan does use lyric sheets in concert; some people have speculated that the reason he switched from guitar to keyboard was so that he could have his lyric sheets in front of him without it being too obvious. I don’t know if that’s true and chances are it was a variety of reasons (and thankfully, he’s started playing a few songs a night on guitar again, without lyric sheets), but he definitely has them in front of him.
