Disco StuParticipant
Okay…I’m seriously thinking about making the trip up to Minneapolis. It would be kind of crazy, but then again, how often does something like this come up?
Disco StuParticipantThat’s incredibly cool, and I’m so disappointed that I can’t make the Minneapolis show. Maybe I’ll get a chance to congratulate you two in Milwaukee, though. I think it’s a really cool idea for the wedding and I wish you nothing but happiness. 😀
Disco StuParticipantI agree; it’s a song she’s done well. I’ve got several versions of it from various recordings (not sure exactly which, and I’m at work right now so I can’t check).
Disco StuParticipantI’m glad we are getting a version of “wild and blue”.
Me too. Now, an officially released version of “All I Want” would be, well, all I want. 🙂
Disco StuParticipantI was just going to post the same thing, paul. The 3-day pass isn’t much of a discount, though; it’s the same price as 3 tickets ($105), but presumably you’ll catch a bit of a break on the Ticketmaster fees compared to buying 3 tickets. I checked to see if it would be enough of a discount for me to pull the trigger on attending the third show, but no, I’m sticking to the first two nights.
Disco StuParticipantThanks for the link, paul. It’ll be interesting to see what the Park West is like. The comments about the difficulty of parking as well as the benefits of getting there early both concern me, but there’s really nothing I can do about it. I won’t be looking for a place to sit, so hopefully I won’t have problems. As for the GA Floor and GA Balcony tickets, I just hope that if there is indeed a distinction between the two that I won’t have a problem getting my tickets Saturday morning. Murphy’s Law dictates that they go onsale when I have another commitment. Fingers crossed that it won’t be a problem.
tntracy, that’s very cool about the tour name. Sounds good to me!
Disco StuParticipantI had heard about Lucinda for a few years before I ever heard her music. As a huge Dylan fan, several people told me I’d probably like her music, but for whatever reason I didn’t check her out until my sophomore year in college. I remember getting Car Wheels and listening to it over and over again, followed by picking up the self-titled album and some fond memories of listening to I Just Wanted to See You So Bad while I drove my car in the middle of the night to visit my girlfriend at college (who I’ll be marrying two months from today 🙂 ) because, well, I just wanted to see her so bad. My first Lu show was in fall of ’05 in Chicago. At that point, I hadn’t picked up World Without Tears yet, and the heartstopping rendition of Ventura she opened with that night still ranks up near the top of performances I’ve ever seen.
I’ve seen her eight times now, I think, which means I’ve seen her play more than any other artist except for Dylan. I’m looking forward to adding three shows to that total this fall.
Disco StuParticipantIn regards to the Chicago shows at West Park, I just called for information on seating chart. This will be a GA show. There is seating available, and could or could not have seating on floor. No information at present for the floor. Also, no onsale date available.
Thanks for the info…I’m crossing my fingers that there won’t be seating on the floor. GA with seats is the worst of both worlds, IMHO.
In any case, though, I’m really looking forward to these shows. I’m probably doing the first two nights and skipping the third – can’t really take time off work, and the shows are about a 2.5 to 3 hour drive each way for me so even two is pushing it – and from what I hear, the Park West is going to be a great place to see Lu. I believe it holds something like 800 people; very small and intimate.
Disco StuParticipantIn regards to the Chicago shows, my brother lives in the area, and his thoughts on the Park West venue are:
“The Park West is a great venue. Really not a bad seat in the place. Has more of a supper club layout, meaning the floor terraces up, and is wider rather than longer. It is in Lincoln Park, which is a nice area.”
Are there seats there? I was under the impression it was GA.
I can’t decide which one I’d prefer for the Lu shows. Normally I would say GA all the way, but since I have to work and then drive 2.5 hours to get there, reserved seats would give me a better chance to get close…
Disco StuParticipantGot my 3rd-row ticket in the Milwaukee presale this morning and I am EXCITED! It’s been too long since my last Lu show.
Disco StuParticipantThanks very much for the info, Tom. I would love to make it to all three nights of the Chicago run, but given that it’s about a two and a half hour drive for me and I have to work all week, I think two is probably my limit. The first show especially sounds intriguing…would love to hear some really rare stuff from Ramblin’ and Happy Woman Blues.
And the Milwaukee show on 9/22 will be a nice warm-up for me. I love the Pabst and remember how good her show was when I saw her there in ’07.
Disco StuParticipantI just got an email from the Pabst Theater in Milwaukee. Lucinda’s going to be playing there Tuesday, September 22. The Pabst e-member presale starts August 3, though given that it’s general admission, it probably doesn’t matter if you wait for the regular onsale August 7. 🙂
This is cool and all (and the Pabst is a great theater), but I think I’m going to wait to hear more about those intriguing Chicago shows before I make up my mind for sure…
Disco StuParticipantThat sound you just heard was me breathing a huge sigh of relief. October 13-15 sounds good for me, though it’ll be hell driving back and forth from WI to the shows. Especially after recovering from my wedding the Saturday before. I don’t know if I’ll hit all three or not…it depends on whether it’s just a regular three-night stand (not that that’s anything to be dismissive about, of course 🙂 ) or if something extra-special is planned.
Disco StuParticipantAs soon as more shows are posted and I can see for sure that she’s not going to be anywhere near the Midwest on the weekend of the October 10th and 11th (when I’m getting married :)), I can breathe a huge sigh of relief. I’m guessing I’m in the clear if she’s in NY on the 8th. But I’m looking forward to catching at least a couple shows later in the fall…
Disco StuParticipantWhy is it that every time (OK not every time) that some one comes in with a different albeit well-framed opinion in regards to LWs music, people find it necessary to say it’s bull*hit or they have their head’s up their #ss?
I would argue that parts of the article being discussed are hardly “well-framed opinion
.” Maybe it’s sloppy writing and the author in fact has a better grasp on Lu’s recent work than:Little Honey was disturbingly lousy, with Williams offering up 13 mostly sappy odes to Love and that’s with a big fat fucking capital L. It was everything fans thought Williams could never be: maudlin and melodramatic
would indicate. But taken at face value, whether Little Honey is a great album or a terrible album, this indicates to me an author who doesn’t really know what he’s talking about. Is her cover of It’s A Long Way To The Top a “sappy ode to Love”? Is If Wishes Were Horses “maudlin and melodramatic” (if it is, then I’d love to hear why it is and why her earlier work, apparently acclaimed by the author, isn’t…especially considering how long ago it was written)?
The bottom line is that, while some of the other criticism leveled at WWT, West, and Little Honey seemed to be backed up more effectively, opinions like the one I quoted above leave me not thinking that the author is wrong about a Lucinda album that he actually listened to, nor do they make me reconsider my own feelings about the album. Instead, I shake my head and guess that he gave it a cursory listen, if that. It’s not that I don’t think someone can validly criticize Little Honey as “disturbingly lousy”; it’s that if someone does so and in doing so makes a crazy characterization of one of her most upbeat and uptempo albums as “maudlin and melodramatic”…well, I’m going to need to hear why the author thinks all thirteen songs on the album are sappy love songs. It’s a contrarian enough opinion that I’m nowhere near satisfied to take it at face value – and as I said previously, it instantly makes me think the author never gave it a real listen.
