I agree with gmfeld that at times it seemed like they could have used an extra player onstage. Perhaps a ‘utility guy’ to add some pedal steel, or occassional keyboards. etc. That said – Val McCallum (only with them until end of April it seems) is an outstanding talent, and really knocked the crowd out. I was particularly impressed with his Johnny Cash like runs on Happy Woman Blues. Just great.
For those of you on FB, check my page – David Emerson – for a good 2 minute video clip from Boston HOB of Honey Bee.DEmersonParticipantIs it true that Val McCallum is the son of David ‘The Man From Uncle’ McCallum?
Boy – he was outstanding at the House of Blues in Boston last night. Like, he was blowing people away good.
DEmersonParticipantThanks for the write-up. I’m in Boston but I will be headed to New Orleans next week and have a ticket to see her at the House of Blues Mon. night – can’t wait!
The Eric you mention on guitar also played a bit with David Bowie and Tin Machine so yeah – he’s no slouch.DEmersonParticipantTerrific show at the Orpheum last night (10/8). Couple ‘interesting’ moments of note. As noted here, Lucinda called out Ray LaMontagne for the encore (along with someone on pedal steel – tasty). I was thinking this morning that it was West, but yes, Fruits of My Labor is right. He does have an interesting voice (he is playing Boston’s Opera House 10/9-10). She called him the best singer since Otis Redding (or words to that effect) and she seemed really amazed by the whole thing. It was a cool moment.
The other was toward the end of the regular set, during Joy as the band was rocking out, all of a sudden a fight broke out right down in front. Lucinda sort of watched it warily, security was quickly on the 2 yahoos (one guy was really pounding the other guy for a few seconds). Security got things under control, and Lucinda finally made her way back up to mic and sang directly (it seemed) at the brawlers, “I don’t want you any more, you stole my joy…” to large cheers from the crowd.
What else – yes, she looked great – all in black including knee high black boots, tight jeans. She seemed to be having fun last night. They opened with Real Love and played a solid 2 hours (9-11p). Really good show – and her band Buick 6 continues to impress.DEmersonParticipant@Tim wrote:
Scoresby, I just got tickets in row RR. What do you think?
Any double letter Orchestra seat at the Orpheum is a terrific seat. The whole place is a good vibe, but if you’re in that front sec. you’re especially good.
DEmersonParticipantI went and managed to get front and center. She was introducing a new song, and I’m the guy who shouted out ‘Honey Bee’ and she laughed and said something like, “we’ll do that too, but we’re working our way up to Honey Bee.”
It was a fun night, and a good show (only my 2nd so I can’t really compare to others all that much), but this show, on an early Sat. evening, found Lu and the band rocking pretty good for much of the 1.25 hour set. Several new tracks featured (Little Rock Star, Honey Bee – still as good as I remember it from Austin City Limits last year, and Real Love, which she may have opened with).
Joy found the band really jamming at the end. Her 3 song encore began with a song (not sure which one – an early one she said they don’t play often) for a couple that had gotten married there that day, then a really good Are You Down and then a version of (of all things!) AC/DC’s It’s A Long Way to the Top – which didn’t quite work imo, but they seemed to enjoy it – as I think they did the entire show. From what I could tell, Lucinda was in good spirits – making mention of how honored she was to play after Mavis Staples (who was great).
Other ones I recall for sure her doing were Bleeding Fingers and Broken Guitar Strings, Drunken Angel, and Come On.
So yeah – it was a very nice setting to see her – if you wanted to get close, you could…Sound was fantastic, the band was superb – very glad I went!
