    My Sweet Side,

    Here’s the Variety review:

Incidentally, I’m coming in town for the Saturday and Sunday shows. Never having attended a show at The El Rey, can anyone suggest the best spots for the show? How are the sightlines and acoustics? What time are folks turning up to get in line?

BTW, does anyone know the story of how Lu came to steal Dwight Yoakam’s longtime rhythm section (Taras and Jim) within the course of a few months? Maybe an interesting story (or not).

I’ve seen Lu a number of times, from 1998 thru present (though I’ve yet to see her with the current lineup)…

Car Wheels era: I saw her at HoB in New Orleans, shortly after the release of the record. It was Kenny Vaughn and Bo Ramsey on guitar. I believe John Jackson replaced Bo for a while on that tour, then they switched out again later. The rest of the lineup was (probably) the one from the ACL performance.

Essence era: I saw Lu at Gruene Hall during the pre-release tour. It was Bo and David Steele (then on loan from Steve Earle’s Dukes) on guitars, plus Don Heffington on drums, Taras on bass. Later, I saw her with Bo and Doug Pettibone on guitar, Taras on bass and Jim Christie on drums. I believe at that point, she still had a keyboard player (Michael Ramos maybe?). On one final date on that tour, it was Doug, Taras and Jim only, solidifying the lineup that she’d have for some time.

As we all know, that was one helluva band. Still, I can’t wait to hear the new lineup (in LA!!).
