DavidKParticipantLooks like “Bitter Memory” is finally going to see the light of day, with the official Vol. 2 of the soundtrack:
https://itunes.apple.com/us/album/music-nashville-original-soundtrack/id633684344FYI, if you are buying the CD, Target will have an exclusive version with additional tracks (though “Bitter Memory” is featured on the regular edition as well):
http://www.target.com/p/nashville-volume-2-deluxe-soundtrack-only-at-target/-/A-14556354I wonder if this means that the song will finally be featured in an upcoming episode. I quit following the show for the most part, but I don’t think “Bitter Memory” has made an appearance yet.
DavidKParticipantLu’s version of “Partners In Crime” is now available for download in the iTunes store:
https://itunes.apple.com/us/album/songs-for-slim-partners-in/id633333233DavidKParticipantFirst, it should be noted that Houston got three inches of rain on Sunday, our biggest one-day tally since June 2010 and more than we’ve had in the past three months in total.
That being said, I think turnout was light due to the weather (didn’t stop a swell of chatter around mid-set).
Anyway, Lu kicked off the evening with quite a few older classics: “Can’t Let Go” and “Car Wheels” opened the set, followed by “The Night’s Too Long”, “Pineola” and “Price To Pay” (not necessarily in that order, but the set was definitely front-loaded with some classics).
A smattering of tunes from the new record (including, of course, the scorching rendition of “Blessed”. Nothing from West that I recall, and only “Honey Bee” from Little Honey. She played a full half of Car Wheels (also “Drunken Angel”, “Lake Charles”, “Jackson” and “Joy” natch).
Probably most notably were the two encore-closers: a Gnarls Barkley cover (“Who’s Gonna Save Your Soul”), which I think she said was just recorded for a soundtrack. And the finale “Cross To Bear” by the Allmans, where Blake Mills really, REALLY shined (though he was just unbelievable throughout the set).
This has to be 10-plus Lucinda shows for me. Her last show at the Warehouse was a bit rowdier and I recall more reminiscing about her time in and around Houston. However, for me, Blake Mills guitar work really made the show memorable. With no disrespect to all the great ‘slingers who have backed Lu over the years, he might just be the best yet. “Joy” was absolutely re-imagined thanks to his grimy guitar work, and he brought something new to just about every song.
What’s left to say? Another stellar Lucinda show for the books! Having Over The Rhine as the openers was definitely icing on the cake.
DavidKParticipantIf it’s any consolation, I checked with my local indie record shop (in Houston) yesterday, and they said their vinyl copies were delayed for some reason. They were expecting the shipment either this Friday or Monday and speculated maybe there was some delay getting the vinyl pressed in time. I’d like to score one of those white vinyl copies.
So I guess it might not be only Amazon, but a manufacturing problem. In any case, I got the deluxe edition from Amazon yesterday 😀
DavidKParticipantTom, I think Tim is heading to your neck of the woods next week, btw.
http://www.timeaston.com/tour.htmlDavidKParticipantOh yeah, great stuff. I watched about half of it – never seen this broadcast EVER. Anyone clamoring for the classics needs to run out and grab it pronto! Everyone else, too.
DavidKParticipantDitto Tom’s comments. I either misunderstood or Amazon and/or Lost Highway screwed up.
DavidKParticipantThanks, Inside Job! Always on the ball.
DavidKParticipantI think we can safely say — MUCH to the chagrin of Tntracy. 8)
DavidKParticipantOh, and many kudos to Tom (“tntracy”) for encouraging the rest of us to get off our asses!
DavidKParticipantJust a quick note (since my internet connection was out all weekend)…
Great show in Nashville, despite the poor turnout. I go out to Nashville about once a year for a show, and I’ve never seen anything like it. Music City is usually such a supportive environment for artists. You could’ve scored a fifth or sixth row seat five minutes before 8pm. So maybe it’s bad timing or a sign of the times or whatever.
As for the set lists, I don’t see that Lu is doing anything unusual as far as playing her new material. I saw Ryan Adams a week ago here in Houston, and he played quite a few new (and currently unreleased songs) and mostly stuff from his last three records. Everyone was supportive and enthusiastic, and the show was pretty well attended. And the folks that did attend Lu’s show at the War Memorial were very enthusiastic to my ears. The current setlists would, however, probably work better in a rock club — after the crowd rushed the stage Saturday, it was a whole ‘nother show (as Tom said).
But I had a great time and really enjoyed chatting with Tom and Sarah and the other fans. If you’re staying home in protest, think twice. Lucinda and Buick 6 absolutely blew the roof off. But to each his own. 😉

DavidKParticipantStoger,
I’ll be looking for ya. I’ll be the short dude in the brown suede jacket.
-David KDavidKParticipantParkerCA,
The version of “Jailhouse Tears” is pretty cool, but no duet with Doug (which I imagine a lot of fans would’ve liked to hear). Lu sings all of the lines — I imagine the duet part was earmarked for later. The arrangement is a bit more mellow but has some really nice pedal steel licks. Overall, all five of the alternate tracks are a touch more mellow than their Little Honey counterparts. Not as radical as the iTunes version of “Real Love” though. 😉DavidKParticipantBTW, I picked up the Best Buy version yesterday and downloaded the bonus “early versions.” They are all in MP3 format @ 320 kbps (should play on any portable or PC). That was a very nice touch to make such high-quality MP3’s avaiable. The songs themselves are definitely worth hearing – I really like the version of “If Wishes Were Horses” in particular.
Like most folks, I’m not a big fan of the multiple versions concept, but at least it was executed well. Thanks to Lucinda and Lost Highway for that.
