    Fuck you, DiM…

    (Notice lack of smilie, asshole).

    Tom

P.S. For all of the rest of you who, like me, are sick & tired of DiM’s continual trolling, gross pretentiousness and desire to insert conflict where there was none before, I have discovered a very handy feature on this board. If you click on any user’s name by one of their posts, you can add that user to your personal “foe” list. After doing so, all posts by this user will be hidden from view when you are logged in. Just like they never existed. Nice, huh?

Also, I apologize for my language above, but if you have been hanging around here long enough, you know it was something that just had to be said. I could hold it back no longer.

Wow–nice use of language and anger, there TnT. Yes, an apology might be in order not so much for the use of language rather it might be appropriate due to the ongoing efforts to con-“trol” and monitor the flow and flavor of the message board. Also and as a side note, didn’t Cheney and Bush try to con-“trol” the flow of information via simply deploying your idea of a “personal foe list” vis-a-vis trying to eliminate differing and valid points of view? Boy howdy, I love how some can make lemonade out of lemons or crap stew out of crap. As I have reflected before, not every show is awesome regardless of the idea that “it’s a mismatch between venue, setlist, and audience.” That’s simply crap but does make a nice crap stew when cooked up properly… Oh, and yes, glad you couldn’t hold it any longer–it’s healthy to let go of things such as this. We all have our challenges especially in regards to such important life matters like fan message boards!

I really enjoy the fact that some on this board cannot face the idea that LWs sometimes has bad nights regardless of superstitious thinking such as “feeding off the energy the crowd emits” (although every artist talks of the requirement regarding the currency that flows from the crowd–not just so superstiously) or the superemposed idea regarding a presumed “mismatch between venue and setlist.” Simply sounds like a bad night. For those of you who have not been paying attention, part of LWs onstage/recording studio reputation includes the occassional rant and fit. However, I wish I could say I appreciate your rosy, perfumed, and long-winded “not to make any excuses” for the latest in “bad nights” but I can’t say I do. That aside and in light of seeing LWs over the past 25-years, I enjoy the whole artist including the reflections of frustration that occur from time-to-time. Thankfully, I accept artists as they stand and enjoy the shows for what they are. Just the same, nice fluffy piece of writing TNT.

Hmmm…no comments here from the right or season ticket holders? How can more than just one person agree with the article! Must be some kind of black magic voodoo going on.

Interesting is the idea of the ongoing Buick 6 “double-bill.” Even in this LWs “fan” site there appears a certain amount of agreement that other options could/should be explored especially in light of the fact that B6 is on its second guitar player. Old Crow Medicine Show is doing something very interesting with its Big Surprise Tour… Hmmm… The Big Surprise Tour: Old Crow Medicine Show along with Dave Rawlings Machine (f/t Gillian Welch), The Felice Brothers and Justin Townes Earle, just announced The Big Surprise Tour, a traveling show of epic collaboration and good times that kicks off in Hampton Beach, NH on August 4. Born out of a deep running comradery built on countless tours and ties between a host of excellent musicians, each evening is sure to be a unique experience as they all put their many combined years of musicianship and knowledge of song-craft and American music into play for these performances.

    Steve:

    A few thoughts:

    1) I am not so sure why you insist on labeling my posts; especially as they are not “divisive” rather they speak to and from a sure-footed and well-informed opinion. What would it be like if you were/are decisive by actually trying to quell an original voice and stance? It certainly appears from what you are posting that it’s all about you and you are taking this personally. I wonder why?

    2) Why are you so interested in similarities that you share with me re: the music world? Again, why is this about you and not the music?

    3) Why tell this forum about your “technical degrees” and how they relate to your posts? And for politics, why is that so important and why bring it to this LWs forum? Again, why is this about you? So, now I should be influenced by a “technical degree” and I should simply agree with you carte-blanch and say, Wow? I wonder what exactly is a “technical degree” technically, speaking of course…?

    4) Curious the “derogatory” way you start this entry with “David, David, David” and I wonder where this negative and finger-pointing energy comes from. Must be difficult to carry such challenging energy in the world.

    5) There are many people who engage in the “intellectualities” (<–which is not a word) of music and actually make a living doing so–Rolling Stone Magazine, The New Yorker, David B, Prince, and EC to name only a few. Not so sure why you are discounting such endeavors so quickly. Again, why is this about you and why are you so interested in pointing your fingers at me? Is this about me or about you? I really am not interested either way just somewhat curious…

    6) Favorite albums, really–not sure I think that way whether it’s LWs, Talking Heads, Prince, Jimmie Dale Gilmore, Robert Earl Keen, Don Walser, or Wilco. As a matter of fact and although I like CWOGR and it’s a terrrific album and one of my favorite tours (w/Jim Lauderdale fyi) it’s not one that I would necessarily cling to. It signals the beginning of an era where her music began to shift (you know, super-group stuff–Charlie Sexton, Bo Ramsey along with slick, glam-production efforts by some of the best producers/master studios in the biz–a big shift). I have some theories around why this happened (and so do many others) but that album also signaled a big shift in her fan base, as well, which was good for the bottom line but not so good for focus in terms of the music’s big picture.

And tying all this together, this idea and shift makes the most recent article that much more accurate, poignant, entertaining, and simply hilarious in its language and Gestalt.

by stevarino on Thu Jun 25, 2009 2:29 am: I got my tickets to Elvis Costello in Dayton this summer. Cant’ wait to see Jerry Douglass (best dobro player in the world according to Alison Krauss) and some guy a few people in here may have heard of, Jim Lauderdale play as his backup band the Sugarcanes…What you always say in here is your opinion. Everyone has an opinion. I’ve learned to know your knowledge and taste in music is pretty similar to mine. And as much as you dis on Lucinda I know you love her music, even her recent work. You just like to get a reaction out of people.

Thanks, for the concert well-wishes, and the dialog. With this in mind here are my concerts for the summer (to-date): Old Crow’s Big Surprise Tour; David Byrne; Paula Cole; Bob Dylan/Willie Nelson; Wilco/Conor Oberst w/the Mystic Valley Band; Zappa Plays Zappa; Adrian Belew; Neko Case; Paul van Dyk; and Brave Combo. I’ve seen Jerry Douglass and Jim Lauderdale several times and in several different settings. Looks like EC is visiting his musical roots again… I really like his Americana presentations…

Also, Steve: Although I appreciate your efforts in terms of trying to put your meaning onto my words, unfortunately you are quite incorrect. My taste in music may be similar to yours but I think there is more difference than similarity especially as it relates to LWs. For example, I am not “dis’ing” LWs rather engaging in an intellectual dialog as is the case with the recent “controversial” article (e.g. not everything any musician does can be the best). And, it’s funny that you find it necessary to recirculate “troll” again. As a matter of fact, some of the fanatics on this board (trolls?) try with all their (bullying) mite to snuff out most original thoughts and reviews. Yes, I do love her music but over the past decade it has become increasingly difficult to find consistency in her records and more importantly, I did not “discover” this notion. In addition, many critics/fans are saying the same thing I am so you may want to take your displaced finger-pointing away from me and put it on someone else–even collectively to a group of people. Even more importantly, I also sense that you are trying to put volume to the “majority” voice of this forum so from this perspective, maybe it’s worth your time to contine to try and can/intepret my words. Funny, if one looks at it from another perspective, all y’all could easily be seen as a ban of trolls, right?

Thanks, for sharing your thoughts, HS and Lefty. It sure is a complicated and interesting web. Nonetheless, I appreciate the way in which you bring meaning and focus to this dilemma and as with any situation, all of our collective ideas are essential and make up a much more colorful whole. And HS, LWs music is music to my ears that’s for sure. From the first time I heard/saw her in 1989 when she opened up for Graham Parker–and I’d never heard her name, my musical life has never been the same. Side of the Road, Something About What Happens When We Talk, Sharp Cutting Wings, WWT, Right in Time, Get Right With God, Gurf Morlix, Jim Lauderdale, Kenny Vaughn, Charlie Sexton, Bo Ramsey, Smitty Smith, Doug Pettibone–It’s a huge package deal for me. Her lyrics are awesome and I just love her sound. But like Prince or Costello or Dylan, sometimes we have to go mining around for good stuff in some of their albums–like everyone, sometimes they get stuck. Plus, it’s really, really hard for them to hold the bar so high, right?

Ahh, yes, it’s nice to agree to disagree. How can we have peace and love along with name-calling? Sounds like a real dilemma… That aside, glad you like LATF–to my ears, it lacks passion and the recent reviewer nails it when he puts some of the responsibility on the record company. The record does not flow in my opinion and thankfully I know there are other opinions out there as well. In regards to my opinion and stance, not pompous or a**holish rather thoughtfully looking around the world trying to put things into perspective. Sorry that it takes you to the name-calling place. That’s not healthy or parallel with peace, love, and understanding. p.s. Folks, this is a message board and an open friendly forum, from what I remember. And as a matter of fact, I am focusing on the strengths of the recent article as an artistic expression, which was very well written with merit. I could also look at its negatively but it’s too strong (and simply too sharp and hilarious) to do so. It’s a cost of doing business–critics, poporatzi (sp)-it all comes with the territory. Sorry about that. It’s just a reality thing. Kinda like my writing on this friendly little forum–some like it some don’t-it’s a cost of me doing business…Oh by the way–scroll down on the same screen with the LWs article and you will see someone take up the same stance with Steve Earle, so goes it.

Not sure where you are going with this attack and tirade, Tony. Really now, if you reread my well-thought out and thorough comments, there is no such flavor of what you speak. I clearly speak to the fact that I do not agree with everything the author is saying. Your comments, on the other hand, have an even and dark patina that I would not want to convey or have to carry around-they must be so heavy. I am balanced with my fanaticism regardless of the tone that sometimes flavors comments on this “friendly little forum.” Don’t worry, friend, I have big shoulders, a small ego, and can handle flash-fired and mean-spirited criticism regardless of its incessant nature here. Also, there are plenty of people who like to try and bully on this board–so I wouldn’t be so quick to stake a claim to such an honor. I am also more than confident that one of the frequent fliers on this friendly little forum will come to your defense and pile it on higher and deeper. And please, don’t worry about me–I can handle it. Although I really appreciate you trying to interpret and put additional meaning into my posting you unfortunately missed the mark (by a long shot or at least a galaxy or two). As a self-proclaimed super-fan (right–you would consider yourself that?) I am surprised that you could not find even one interesting reflection in the recent article because there are clearly more than one…

    – at least half the album was cluttered up by tedious vocals and bloated arrangements. “Righteously,” “Sweet Side” and “Atonement” would have been best served relegated to the b-side sh*tbin, while “American Dream” and the title track were both preachy and pedantic

I agree with most of this quote however, WWT is one of my all-time favorite songs from any artist. Youtube has terrific tear-stained live version that highlights her band of that era (the early days w/Doug) along with the many things that makes LWs, well, LWs. I give the author a lot of credit for having the courage and intelligence to put his pen to paper and really let it fly. It’s worth much more than a quick swipe discounting it and claiming it to be smiple bullsh*t…

Why is it that every time (OK not every time) that some one comes in with a different albeit well-framed opinion in regards to LWs music, people find it necessary to say it’s bull*hit or they have their head’s up their #ss? Not that I agree with everything that the latest author is saying (I do, in fact, really enjoy Essence–lots of great musicians and energy on that record), but his stance is not only articulate, accurate to a certain degree it’s also stunningly modern in terms of vernacular, properly placed swears, metaphorical language and sweet tie-ins to the decade and music at hand. Why is it that such views are so quickly dismissed and bullied out of the dialog (no wonder we have problems with bullying and harassment in this country)? What’s even more curious and awesome is when TO comes in here like a pissed off Hockey-Dad who starts into yelling and ranting at the coach ’cause his son didn’t make the team (whose son shouldn’t of made the team by the way!). Really now, why all the angry commotion and contention? Looking in another direction, can you really defend the idea that some of Little Honey’s lyrics aren’t truly simplistic and melodramatic (Honey Bee for example–would you really score points with your lover by reciting those lyrics aloud during a romantic interlude)? Like Costello and Dylan, not every album, every show, or every breath you take is awesome. I’m gonna leave that kind of sugar-coated blather and notion for someone like Sting…

And then the proverbial downward spiral really kicked in. The obligatory live album followed in 2005 with the dull Live @ The Fillmore; showing the complete lack of imagination we’ve come to expect from music labels, the release simply culled tracks from several different Fillmore shows, offering up bits and pieces instead of a complete show. The dual studio atrocities of West and Little Honey rounded out the decade and did nothing to offset this slipshod live product; taken together, they are underwhelming, self-indulgent and remarkably forgettable. West’s songs were at least partially doomed by the album’s lengthy running time – more than half its songs clocked in at over five minutes – though the stilted production did them no favors either. Little Honey was disturbingly lousy, with Williams offering up 13 mostly sappy odes to Love and that’s with a big fat f#*king capital L. It was everything fans thought Williams could never be: maudlin and melodramatic. The nausea countless listeners experienced wasn’t due to a bad fish taco.

Well, another view seems to surface again. However, some on this happy little forum will disagree and rightfully so. Such a dichotomy does indeed exist in her fan base and for good reason. Without question, her early albums cast a very long and beautiful shadow; one that is very hard to reproduce especially with the influence of so many high-profile producers who seem to be “stilting” and artificially flavoring the end product. Some posters have argued this point many times (even though they were swiftly and artfully cut off at the knees complete with name-calling banter). Whether you agree or not, this is a very well-written and nicely crafted article. Like a newly discovered field of wild flowers in a meadow, LWs early pieces are beyond special, beyond belief, and beyond wonderful…

Not so sure where rave comes into play with this review. Conventional and bland come to mind, which is reflected throughout the article vis-a-vis filler-type language along with small, quippy paragraphs. Predictable and “matter of fact,” really, complete with a thread-bear observation regarding a Lynyrd Skynyrd-t-shirt-clad LWs…

Ahh, yes, the live performance controversy continuum continues–from the camp that states LWs live performances are super-awesome to hmmm, something seems to be awry. But one has to be careful speaking to the continuum in such a way on this friendly little forum because such talk can be turned on its ear in a quick and ugly fashion. Some posters try and squash such reviews swiftly and without regard to honest, pertinent, and accurate reflections… After all, isn’t there an ongoing history of such performances? And isn’t that what makes LWs so wonderful and a true American treasure?
