Ok – so last night’s show. I’m at work so this’ll have to be a quick response for now.
The set list was a crowd pleaser; it was diverse and covered a lot of ground. Highlights for me were: Pineola (second song!), Lake Charles (Lu solo), Copenhagen, Unsuffer Me, Crescent City (I was there with my sister and it’s her favourite Lu song, close to being mine too) and Hard Time Killing Floor Blues.
Stuart Mathis was playing guitar (no Doug). From where we were sitting we struggled to hear him a bit for the first few songs but the sound improved a lot and his playing was brilliant. It is a really stripped back sound from her last tour, and works really well. Mathis would bring something different and special to her next album if he plays guitar on it, I reckon. The rhythm section was tight as hell.
Lu looked well but said before she started the encore that she was a bit nervous but the crowd’s reaction to the show seemed to reassured her, and that she was really digging Mathis’ playing.
Was great to see Lu out here again. All my friends that went said had a great night.
darkhorseParticipantI’m going to see Lu on Monday night here in Melbourne. I saw both shows last time round, and they were v special. So happy that she’s coming out here again so soon after. My only hope is that she play Pineola (or perhaps Everything Has Changed). I’ll report after the show.
PS – A blog sounds like a brilliant idea!
darkhorseParticipanti really, really love this album. i wasn’t sure at first, and it was a slow burn, but it has stayed with me and had hundreds of listens since its release, especially in darker times.
i think a lot of the negative reviews at the time were unfair and kind of missed the point. there seems to be this critical viewpoint that since car wheels lucinda’s songwriting has become “lazier”, which doesn’t seem fair at all. the melodies on west fit perfectly with the album’s content.
the title track has to be one of my favourite all time songs.
darkhorseParticipantthanks, west is criminally underrated. this song is perfect
darkhorseParticipanthere is a youtube of the video for the title track

i was in high school when the captain came out and it used to be on heavy rotation during teenage drinking sessions chillin on friends’ farms.
i think kasey has really been back in form over the last couple of albums
darkhorseParticipantthat’s how much we pay for all our albums over here! and the $AUD is currently above 90 US cents and looks like it might reach parity…. Can’t complain though our unemployment rate is only 5% and we largely avoided recession in the GFC.
The album is very good but it is much more “pop” than her previous work with husband shane nicholson. It’s more like Kasey’s older stuff, actually reminds me of her first (brilliant) album “the captain” more than anything.
The first single (and title track) is charming and a grower and a good indication of what the rest of the album is like.
I’m going to see Kasey in October in a charming little theatre in Bendigo. She’s always great live.
darkhorseParticipantis there a plan for a vinyl release?
darkhorseParticipantthey’ve annouced a second show in melbourne. I’ve bought tickets to both shows, so you’ll all get two show’s set lists and reviews.
hopefully she varies the set list up a bit between shows. i’m very much looking foward to this – can’t wait til april 09!
darkhorseParticipanti got tickets in the presale. i’ll be there. i’m sure she’ll sell the venue out. hopefully lucinda and the band get to see a bit of the country when they’re here. it’s beautiful in april.
darkhorseParticipantI will be attending the Melbourne show at Hamer Hall. Have another (better) festival on the same weekend as the blues and roots fest, so won’t be seeing her there.
Hamer Hall is an awesome venue, the acoustics are amazing and the crowd/artist really feel connected. I have seen Kasey Chambers and Shane Nicholson (with Ryan Bingham supporting), PJ Harvey, and Patti Smith there in 08 – all amazing shows. I am really looking forward to this Australian Tour, haven’t seen Lu live since Berlin in 03.
Anyway, will report with full set list, review etc after the show.
Anyone know how we can get access to the presale tickets? They go on sale tomorrow morning – I don’t want to miss out on good seats.
darkhorseParticipant“West” took a while to grow on me too. Although, looking back, it has definitely ended up being my most “listened to” album from 07. I saw an interview somewhere online last night where Lu said that Little Honey reminded her most of her ST album, and that in a way she felt she had come full circle, but that there was also new growth with songs like Little Rock Star. I think that bodes well for how the fans will receive the album. I’m really looking forward to it. If wishes were horses is the outstanding track of the one’s we’ve heard so far.
I’m interested in seeing what the critical reaction will be to the new album – the reaction to West was rather mixed. I’m not sure that a lot of the reviewers “got” the album, particularly those that gave it very low scores when they had rated Lucinda highly in the past. One of my friends, who is a musician, said that she thought Lu’s music had changed gradually since Car Wheels to be “all about Lucinda”. She said that she felt like she could cover any song of Car Wheels, and some on the albums that followed, but nothing on West. I can see that.
As for songs that will be remembered in 20 years – Pineola, of course.

4 of these sound phenomenal. Have to agree ’bout Elvis though, soon as that voice comes in I’m off to the next track!
i don’t like elvis’ voice much either.
i don’t know if this is too early, but i think “if wishes were horses” has gone straight into my top 10 lucinda songs. it is absolutely stunning. the rest of the songs are good. little honey is certainly sounding like it is shaping up to be lucinda’s most “rock” album.
i’m very, very excited about this album
also – the production on these tracks is absolutely fantastic.
darkhorseParticipanti have had a serious look around online for a copy of the article, including some of the online databases for back copies of the new yorker (i’m a uni student), but they seem to only have from 2001 onwards.
ithe discussion about pineola has been great. it is one of my favourite lucinda songs and I agree with you stu, it is a great example of her songwriting style and it is a song I play to people when i’m trying to introduce them to her music.
i’m new to the board, but i’d love to hear more informed discussion like this happening. it’s great.
cheers, pete
darkhorseParticipantis there any chance someone could post the article? this discussion has got me intrigued and I’d like to read it.
cheers
