thanks. the dna part sounds kinda familiar. never heard of molina or keller williams either.

just found this at npr.org :
“… Hold Time won’t be released until Feb. 17, but listeners can hear the entire album here on NPR Music as an exclusive preview, beginning at 11:59 p.m. ET Monday, Jan. 12.

The new disc was mixed by producer and multi-instrumentalist Mike Mogis, with guest appearances by Lucinda Williams, Zooey Deschanel (She & Him), Rachel Blumberg (The Decemberists) and others. Though it mostly features all-new songs, Hold Time includes a handful of cover tunes, including Don Gibson’s “Oh Lonesome Me” and “Rave On,” made popular by Buddy Holly.

“I think the songwriting style of (Buddy Holly’s) period was superior,” Ward says in an interview with All Songs Considered host Bob Boilen. “There was a certain amount of joy in it, no matter how sad the song is. You get joy in listening to these Buddy Holly or Roy Orbison sad lyrics. I’m attracted to songs that have balance between the darks and the lights and giving them all equal opportunity.”

david, you checked out chuck prophet? he’s pretty good, too.

he has a great voice, and writes some good songs. I saw him w/ James Taylor many moons ago (81?)singing backup and he did his recent (at that time) hit “If Youre Only Lonely” and it was beautiful… almost stole the show with that one
    have fun!
ps: are you gonna see van morrison at the H-bowl doing Astral Weeks?

excerpt from Foot of Pride by Bobby D:

Hear ya got a brother named James, don’t forget faces or names
Sunken cheeks and his blood is mixed
He looked straight into the sun and said revenge is mine
But he drinks, and drinks can be fixed
Sing me one more song, about ya love me to the moon and the stranger
And your fall on the sword love affair with Erroll Flynn
in these times of compassion when conformity’s in fashion
Say one more stupid thing to me before the final nail is driven in.

Well, there ain’t no goin’ back when your foot of pride come down
    Ain’t no goin’ back

There’s a retired businessman named Red, cast down from heaven and he’s out of his head
He feeds off of everyone that he can touch
He said he only deals in cash or sells tickets to a plane crash
He’s not somebody that you play around with much
Miss Delilah is his, a Philistine is what she is
She’ll do wondrous works with your fate
Feed you coconut bread, spice buns in your bed
If you don’t mind sleepin’ with your head face down in a grave.

Well, there ain’t no goin’ back when your foot of pride come down
    Ain’t no goin’ back

Well they’ll choose a man for you to meet tonight
You’ll play the fool and learn how to walk through doors
How to enter into the gates of paradise?
No, how to carry a burden too heavy to be yours
Yeah, from the stage they’ll be tryin’ to get water outta rocks
A whore will pass the hat, collect a hundred grand and say thanks
They like to take all this money from sin, build big universities to study in
Sing “Amazing Grace” all the way to the Swiss banks

Well, there ain’t no goin’ back when your foot of pride come down
    Ain’t no goin’ back

what attracts me to a singer is honesty, relevance, and soul. the sweet voice is a bonus, but i think it boils down to soul. some of my favorite female singers are Patsy Cline, Joni Mitchell, Joan Baez, Big Mama Thornton, LaVern Baker, Linda Ronstadt, kd lang, Barbra Streisand. i do get bored quickly with really sweet voices for some reason (eg Emmy Lou Harris, and sometimes, Baez).

i think Lucinda has enough on the ball (cojones?) to know exactly what she does to the guys with some of her lyrics. my wife and sister think she’s too whiny and rough, but i think she’s the bees kneesl. maybe theyre jealous of a boozy, bluesy broad that can get down to it, and enjoy it. it’s what shes singing just as much as how she sings and how you can relate to it.

i also think she has a good ear for nice melodies. lastly but certainly not leastly, she seems to have knack for enlisting help from great musicians (from Gurf Morlix to Doug P and everyone inbetween) who contribute their considerable talent and experience to the material.

sure, she’s moody, but who ain’t? it could be a lot worse, i just was reading some stuff about Jim Morrison…

hope you get the chance to see her live soon. the best artists are usually good live performers are always better live than on record, imo.

thanks for posting the picture, that’s a different one than i saw. i wonder if june bug and hurricane are nicknames for some of those kids?

anyway, it’s definitely one of my favorite songs.

    hi all, nice discussion.
i saw some of the pictures, but in the one w/ the 3 guys i still couldn’t find the june bug vs hurricaine thing. maybe it was a different picture i was looking at…
oh, yes, and i saw that picture that looked very familiar, too.

as a college summer job i used to deliver RC Cola to some juke joints in east texas (Mance Lipscombe territory) almost 40 years ago and those joints in the pictures are much nicer that the ones i was visiting.
