But after the tirade about the “decibles” the air went out of the show.
I had a bit different perspective on it — for me, this was when the show finally got good. All I could think for the first 45 minutes was that Lu was completely uninspired and the band had no fire. Once she explained that there was a noise-level cap, all that made sense — and then I felt like she was angry (like a bee) for the rest of the show, which gave the music the bite that I’d been expecting all along. She gave a chuckle and a sneer when she introduced “Disgusted,” which said it all. And “Long Way to the Top If You Wanna Rock and Roll” had an extra bit of irony.
I’d never seen her with this band. Not bad. That drummer can pound those skins, huh? They all seemed so young compared to the bands she’s worked with before, for the most part. I liked when she introduced them as “the boys.” She could easily be their mother … or even grandmother.
I suspect Chautauqua tonight won’t be as tame. There’s a sit-on-the-grass-and-drink-wine-and-not-really-pay-attention area outside the tent, but plenty of uncomfortable wood pews inside that oughta keep people on their feet and into the music. Not like the Botanic Gardens crowd, which was horribly lame. Fifty feet from the stage, where I spent most of the show, the hum of conversation rose to nearly the level of the music coming from the stage. Lame.
