BlueKoyoteParticipant
Looks like reviewer used the printed setlist on the stage for their song titles, rather than what actually happened on the night, which deviated from that 🙂
BlueKoyoteParticipant@stoger “Pale Blue Eyes” is a Velvet Underground song written by Lou Reed. So we’re both right 🙂
BlueKoyoteParticipantWhat an amazing show to be at. As per the night before, after a few songs it looked like it might fall apart, only for it to be wonderful. Certainly the best audience response I’ve seen for a Lu gig in London, which always helps proceedings (I’ve had 3 previous London visits for Lu).
It was 35-40 mins longer than the Dublin and London-1 shows that I went to this week, which I guess was a testament to the band wanting to keep up the enjoyment. It was a great novelty to get those guest appearances in the encores: I assume they hadn’t rehearsed the songs with the band and just winged it. My favourite bit of the encore though was the VU cover, a really lovely version, which they rocked out at the end.
The sound on the floor was, again, really clear from where I was under the right stack, which is never a given for any new venue I go to. Kudos to the Front of House guy.
I was hoping for some more of the new album, as I’d had a few days to listen to it having bought the vinyl at the Dublin show. As it’s only just out over here and not yet out Stateside, I can understand why there were only 2 songs played, which I thought sounded wonderful live.
“Greenville” was listed on the setlist as an alternative to 2 Kool, which would have been… cool, but in all it was a great set. There are just too many great songs in the catalogue ! I think my favourite bit of the night was the end of “Joy” where Lu sang the last couple of lines unaccompanied, changing the timbre. It’s those little inflections which Lu does which marks her out from the people who always sing their songs verbatim.
Seeing the list of US shows coming up, with residencies…. can we have a London residency for 4/5/6/7 nights please ? I’d happily decamp to London for that. Or my hometown of Dublin, but I know that’s asking too much !
BlueKoyoteParticipant@stoger Maybe the venue insisted the DJ keep the sounds going so there’s no silence, like some radio stations do. I guess most of the clubs I go to in Ireland (and the UK) tend to do that, so the continuum didn’t stand out for me. I’ve been at shows where the DJ kicks in too early when another encore is planned, and someone just tells the DJ to stop.
I’ll write on the Night 2 post about that show.BlueKoyoteParticipantMy first time back under that canvas since the turn of the century when it was the Millennium Dome. I flew over from Dublin yesterday, as one Lu show is never enough for me if there are more within reach.
The DJ must have some pedigree as he was listed on the stage times and I thought he did a great job, playing lots of my favourites. Where would you ever hear Iris Dement and Caroline Rose played in a club ?! 🙂
Despite the sonic troubles on stage, the sound from the PA was wonderful from where I was standing. I’d say it’s one of the smallest spaces I’ve seen Lu play. It’s great to hear the new songs amongst all the wonderful back catalogue tracks.
That voice, those songs, and the fantastic band… One of life’s treasures and top treats for sure. Roll on tonight, and please keep coming back to Europe as often as possible.
BlueKoyoteParticipantWhat a wonderful show in Dublin tonight. Lucinda and the band were in great form, and the crowd really got behind them. A Sold Out, stuffed Vicar St venue compared to 3 years ago. Up there with any of the shows I’ve seen her do (about 15). And Stuart Mathis knocked the ball outta the park, as per the other times I’ve seen him.
I was delighted the new album was available at the Merch stand, CD & Vinyl. The vinyl comes with a download code where you can get MP3s and / or WAVs. I downloaded both: the MP3s are 96kbps. The WAVs are CD standard 16bit/44.1Khz, which also has an extra Radio Edit of “Dust”. It’s a great move to let us have the WAVs. All bands should do it that way, and I salute Lucinda & Tom for doing that: Thanks.
See you in London, and come back to Dublin more often please !
BlueKoyoteParticipantYes, today I’ve also heard Glasgow (Celtic Connections Festival) & Brussels. Can we get the full list from Tom ? Or is that them all ?
BlueKoyoteParticipantHi Tom, can you say what format the download is please from Pledgemusic ? So many sites just do MP3, but I’m an Audiophile nerd: I want the vinyl, but if I only get a lossy download, then I’d have to plump for CD instead. Can I suggest/plead that there are other download options, like Flac lossless and/or the Holy Grail… 24bit or higher ?
Thanks,
Joe, Dublin.BlueKoyoteParticipantThat’s magnificent news, thanks Tom. Delighted to hear that. I can’t make the Belfast one, and my hometown Dublin show won’t be enough to assuage my passion for these shows ! The 2 London shows last November confirmed that 🙂
You can delete this thread seeing as you’re going to post more pertinent ones.Joe,

If anyone knows when this broadcast is going to take place, please let me know here, as I want to hear it.The performance, sound and vista last night were truly truly wonderful. I can’t wait for Part 2 tonight 🙂
BlueKoyoteParticipantI’m flying over from Dublin for both of these. While part of me wishes there were more shows, in Ireland, Britain and mainland Europe, I know I’d want to go to more shows if there were, which I can’t afford right now, so this makes it easier 🙂
BlueKoyoteParticipantHi Tom,
Thanks for taking the time to explain all that. It certainly puts it all into perspective. Ultimately I’ll end up going wherever I have to to see Lucinda play, as I see it as such a privilege to get to see any of her shows. So I’ll be delighted wherever/whenever that it.
JoeBlueKoyoteParticipantHi Tom, I’d like to chime in with the other sentiments here. I live in Dublin, Ireland, and flew to London to see the 2006 and 2009 shows. I know London is an “important” gig for an Artist to do, but at the 2009 show, Lucinda commented that her 3 least favourite shows to do are LA, NY and London, due to the pressure. And by all accounts, the further north the shows in Britain, the better they were !
So bring on a slew of shows in Scotland, Ireland and the rest of Europe !
🙂
Joe
BlueKoyoteParticipantSo I got the email alerting me to the SXSW EP on iTunes and saw the Facebook post. But you have to live in the USA and so use the US iTunes to be able to buy it. So I can’t get it, as I’m in Ireland ! How frustrating is that ?! I know, I know, that’s how it works ! I was able to buy the new album on vinyl from Amazon US, why not this ?! This is so annoying. I want to buy it, but if I can’t, that only forces people down the illegal download path, which I don’t want to do.
An Irish friend of mine was over in TX on vacation and attended the show and he wants it buy it too and he can’t either.
Any legal way around this ?
