nice article.
wonder what QUEEN song she covered in the old days?! lu singing freddie mercury…talk about unusual!! i’d pay just about anything to hear that : )aloyisusParticipantgreat pictures…quite a lucinda-themed page all round, actually! if ya don’t mind, i’ll ask you for an ‘add’. i’ll come up as ‘steven aloyisus’.
aloyisusParticipanti’ve never really found guitar tabs for lucinda’s songs very helpful. she keeps her patterns very simple anyway. she really just does variations on G, C, D, Am, Bm and moves her capo around. just goes to show what a fine songwriter she is, that she can get so much out of so little.
i’ve never seen a tab for the lead guitar parts, which would be nice. when i’m at a show, i watch doug almost as much as lu…never really picked anything up. he’s got such a great style.
good luck with the songs.[/i]aloyisusParticipantthe dylan-connected hank williams song sounds like an excellent project. can’t wait to hear lucinda’s take!
aloyisusParticipantgreat shots! very professional job. thanks forposting : )
aloyisusParticipantcan’t say ‘all of them’ i suppose!
guess i’d say ‘make me down a pallet on your floor’, the mississippi john hurt song(listed as trad.) on ‘Ramblin’. the robert johnson numbers are incredible as well.
i know lucinda has grown as an arist over the years, and her own work is beyond brilliant, but it’s sometimes fun to go back to that record.
the version of skip james ‘hard times, killing floor’ she’s still performing on this tour is pretty sweet too!!!aloyisusParticipant@jackstraw wrote:
just getting a chance to check in re friday’s show at radio city.
good show, too short for me but i’m convinced the ny crowd that
attends a lucinda williams show is not looking for her to play
2.5 hrs……
length of the show aside, she is still able to astound me with
her sheer presence. i can’t articulate what it is, but she’s got
it in spades. rescue to open was jaw dropping. at quick count i’ve
seen 9 shows at radio city but never seen any *quiet* music.
between the pristine sound and the unbelievable acoustics at radio
city, that opener is something i’ll never forget. after the notes
fron pettibone’s sparse picking faded, they were gone, not an echo
to be heard. everything’s changed, west, lake charles were just
beautiful. while i would usually agree with the previous *too
many slow songs* assesment, radio city was the place to play the
slow/quiet tunes. and on a final note, this was my first go with
the new rhythm section. for me, the bass player was just there,
nothing to take note of but not horrible. but the drummer was, uh,
less than adequate. pace and pitch were way off on a couple
of songs. i know it’s pointless to whine about the missing love
band but i really miss taras and jim after fridays show. oh well.i completely agree that the openning number was jaw-dropping. the sound was so incredible even lucinda was moved to say it after the song ended. i think she used the word ‘spectacular’, if memory serves me.
maybe the set list could have been arranged differently, but i thought it was a great show. lucinda’s voice sounded fantastic, and she acted very into it all night. doug’s playing was brilliant as usual(he’s become one of my favorite all-around guitarist). the bass & drums might not have been up there with the love band, but they were fine. i found the electric fiddle a nice touch.
the over-riding thing i take away from the show was the amazing sound of the hall. i feel that if lucinda has her say, her returning visits to nyc will be at radio city.
one minor sour note for me…the tour tee shirt is a pretty uninsired one. if they were just gonna copy the ‘west’ cover, for $30 couldn’t they have at least added lucinda’s picture?! but here i sit, wearing it all the same!!aloyisusParticipantright off the bat, let me say i really enjoyed the whole cd! i enjoyed what i found to be a nice progression, a flow, to the songs. other than ‘car wheels'(which will never be equalled), i think ‘west’ stands up with any other lu release.
while i don’t find any one song that stands out above the rest much, i found each song has it’s charms. ‘fancy funeral’ and ‘unsuffer me’ are early favs.
there’s been some discussion that ‘wrap my head around that’ doesn’t measure up. it’s different, but i like it as well. i imagine that tune will rock live! performers do craft songs for that purpose, after all…especially a songwriter as gifted as lucinda.
if i had to pick one song from the record, it would be the closer, ‘west’. it’s a beautiful number, and closes out a great album perfectly!
after listening to the cd a number of times during the day, i must say i’m looking forward even more to seeing lu at radio city in ny on march 23rd!! -
