On this off day, I scouted out the venue–which really does boast a statue of a clown, a zoo sign, etc in keeping with its name Circus Krone. A Lucinda promo poster sits alongside one for the Chippendales, but those boys don’t play the Circus until November. Still, it was nice to see Stuart’s name practically rubbing up against a frontal photo of a Chippendale. I call this a fine double bill for certain Forum members (you know who you are). I captured the image in my cellphone camera, but it’s unfortunately the type of camera which won’t send or forward texts or visuals outside the USA, The clock and the camera are the only operative features (and I have to add seven hours when I look at the former).
Guess David and Butch are enjoying their “bonding day” in Spain’s Basque country prior to return. Quick trip. Anyone make the Fest? Let the duo fun begin Sabbath night.

A segment of the audience started cheering immediately at the opening strains of “Those 3 Days.” In front of “If there’s a Heaven,” Lu waxed geneological, noting her “mixed Welsh and German”ancestry. This gave her an opportunity to describe her grandmother’s domestic details, rituals, and attire at great length; then she turned etymological, noting that the surname “Muller”(where’s the German umlaut on this Dutch keyboard when I need it?) was once in the family, yielding her father’s first name eventually. “Lake Charles”gave her a chance to compare Louisiana boudan to German sausage. As for the Guthrie song, she went on and on about Amos Lee’s theory (take note Lafayette) that the title “House of Earth” referenced a woman’s vagina. Except it took Lu some seconds to pronounce that word, after suggesting she maybe shouldn’t utter it–then counter suggesting that she should maybe use a less clinical term. The upshot seemed to be she felt freer to speak from stage in Europe. Trouble ensued though during ‘HOneybee,” which Lu said sounded awful in the monitors on stage. After a couple of false starts, she said “now people will say I’m moody, temperamental, a pain in the ass.” Stuart actually laughed at this, but Mama was not mirthful. She got through it, took a longer than usual pre-encore break, then smilingly nailed the final two covers and two originals.
Dirk (last name to come) from Hamburg was a great opener and will also open other 3 German shows. I bought his CD, and I saw him give one to Lu. He had the audience in stitches between numbers, but I could only catch “Lucinda” and later “Hello my name is Johnny Cash.” the songs were in English of course; though born in Hamburg and now back there, his formative years were spent (take note dd) in the state of New Jersey.
I ended up seated next to the promoter, who told me the Stones had played here, also the Beatles. Willie Nelson fairly recently. It wasn’t full, but it was respectable last night–and not as huge a capacity as you might think, given the names who’ve played it. And it really does function as a circus from December to March. I guess the Chippendales are the transition show (November).
Good to see Matt Blake, also guitar tech Justin, tour manager Chris, and Tom of course. Stuart rocked.

Man in Munich,
I would have spit on my PC had I been drinking any liquid beverage with Amos’s assessment of the meaning of “House of Earth.’ 😆
Note: Googling ‘House of Earth vagina’ yields some interesting results, but none that verify his theory. Too funny, thanks for the back story on that one.
Always, thanks for keeping us posted on set lists and behind the scenes details!
