Seems most appropriate to play Vic Chesnutt’s track from 1991 for the Forum, especially since Lucinda has dedicated a song to Vic “Seeing Black” to appear on “Blessed”
Amazing that despite a serious auto accident which left Vic partially paralyzed for most of his short life, he carried on performing right until late last year.

Members of Lucinda Williams’ Band Back up Bates/Lucinda Shows Up

Los Angeles, CA—At just 24 years of age, singer/songwriter Mark Bates is already reaching what could be construed as the pinnacle of his career—but more likely it’s just the beginning. Last Friday, Bates released his sophomore album, Night Songs (street date June 12), on a special night at Hotel Café.

This album has taken on a special meaning for Bates, who had the opportunity to work with Eric Liljestrand, who has won a Grammy Award as engineer/mixer, and was co-producer of the Lucinda Williams albums, Blessed and Little Honey. But that also opened the door for members of Lucinda’s band to back up Bates for the release party—bassist David Sutton and drummer Butch Norton. Liljestrand also joined the band on lead guitar and backing vocals, as did pedal steel player Eric Heywood (Ray LaMontagne).

Why is this significant? Not only does Mark have a song on the album called “Lucinda,” but she was also in the audience last Friday.

“I was humbled to be playing with some of my favorite musicians,” said Bates. “Lucinda came out. I got to introduce her to my mom, who cried. It was a way cool evening that I’m still riding high from.”

But don’t just take his word for it. Liljestrand, who played lead guitar and sang backups on Friday evening, knows that Bates is a special talent as well and he sensed something that night.

“I always enjoy playing a show, but this felt different,” said Liljestrand. “It felt like we were playing hit songs. People were singing along, and it was all so effortless. Every time I looked over at one of the other players, we shared a smile. It was one of those nights where you remember why you do what you do.”
