    Wow.
    What a great show.
It opened with “Can’t let Go” followed by Lu’s intro..
“Now a very special guest is going to join us… one of my favorite guitarists of all time”.. which really got my attention. She then introduced special guest guitarist and Seattle resident Bill Frisell who played out the setlist with the band.

    Pineola
    Drunken Angel
    Ventura
It’s gonna Rain (fitting city to first hear the song)
    Lake Charles
    Are you Down
    Something Wicked
    Changed the Locks
    Out of Touch
    Righteously
    Joy
    Honeybee
    Magnolia
    Get Right with God
Keep on Rockin’ in the Free World

    Near perfect summer night…
Always great to see Lucinda in the neighborhood I was born and raised in.

The place was packed.. we got great “seats” stage left.
In our site line there were two girls standing and taking turns doing what can only be described as a “sign language sing along” .. full of feeling; beautiful and amazing to watch..

First show we’ve taken our eight year old to since Redding, Ca.. a couple years ago now.
She loved it.. “Honeybee” was the song of the night for her..

Great reporting Samish. So glad your daughter enjoyed Honey Bee.
Just prior to this song “something” else enjoyed “Joy”

And Lu’s cover of NEIL keeps on going in the encores. Great tribute.

SamishSeaMike, I grew up ’round those parts, too! I live in North Carolina now, but grew up in Wallingford, Ballard and *ahem* Yesler Terrace for a while also. Went to Blanchet High School. ANYWAY, thanks for the concert report and I envy you the Lu + Bill Frisell experience! Did the crowd appreciate It’s Gonna Rain? Also, strong work on introducing your 8-year-old to authentic music… I used to sing ‘Cresent City’ to my son at bedtime 🙂 Vivian

Nice video of the elephant and crowd pics at the Oregon Zoo, LW..

Vivian, I went to St. Benedicts and later Lincoln High, but split my time b’tween Wallingford and Capital Hill where my Dad lived.. very familiar w Yesler Terrace.. The crowd really did seem to appreciate It’s gonna Rain.. I know we did..

Took a few pics, but I am unable to attach them for some reason…

A nice review in the Times..

Bill Frisell joins Lucinda Williams for outstanding show | Concert review

Anyone who attended the Lucinda Williams concert Thursday at Woodland Park Zoo saw not only one of Lucinda’s best local shows in years, but also the free “bonus” of guitarist Bill Frisell joining Williams’ band all night.

Frisell has done studio work with Williams, and he’s even sat in at some of her Seattle shows in the past. But on Thursday, he became the central part of the band all night, and his tasteful guitar was a constant counterpoint to Lucinda’s vocals.

Williams has played ZooTunes in the past, but she seemed particularly inspired on Thursday. That could have been because of Frisell (whom she called her “favorite guitarist in the whole world”), or it may have been the energy that came from several new songs in her set.

Particularly nice was a cover of J.J. Cale’s “Magnolia,” a song included on her forthcoming double album. Frisell’s restrained melodic flourishes on the cut made it a stunner at the Zoo, and the lyrics about lost love sounded as if Williams herself had penned them.

Williams also played many of her own songwriting classics, such as “Pineola,” “Get Right With God,” and “Drunken Angel.” But it was another cover, this one of a Neil Young song, that ended the evening and got the entire crowd on its feet. Williams often includes “Rockin’ in the Free World” at her shows, but at a special concert, and with Frisell showing he also has rock guitar god moves, it was the perfect rockin’ ending to a fabulous show.
