Great show in W 😆 innipeg
I like how Lucinda is real and doesn’t try to act like the Godess she is.

November 8, 2008 at 6:50 pm #38104DavidinMaineParticipantStoger (I assume that is just an online name):
Here is a review of the Winnipeg show complete with a mini-setlist. Sounds like more of the same re: similar song selection and relatively uninspired performance. Looks like she could use a much deserved rest at the end of this leg…

November 8, 2008 at 8:25 pm #38106DavidinMaineParticipant“The remainder of the show’s first half was a bit more subdued, however, alternating from the syrupy singing and lilting guitar solos of Steal Your Love to the impassioned optimism of Tears of Joy; from the ode-to-suffering People Talkin’ to the bittersweet ballad Jailhouse Tears (cut as a duet with Elvis Costello on the new disc, but given the torch-and-twang treatment by one of her bandmates yesterday).”
This certainly sounds like (and I hear it as) reviewer-speak for a dip in the show’s momentum. I am not a fan of “syrupy singing” nor “lilting guitar solos.” Not good descriptors, really of a hot performance. But then again I am not a cheerleader on this board.
Thanks,
David

And I am not a cheerleader.
November 8, 2008 at 10:35 pm #38108DavidinMaineParticipantHmmm, ax to grind? Not really. Allow me to introduce myself, I am a man of wealth and taste. Pleased to meet you. Hope you guessed my name, but what’s puzzling you, is the nature of my game. No ax to grind, silly, just a dialed in ear and an honest realization of what is a good performance… Standards, you see. It’s OK that every show and tour is not the best, really. No need to be defensive–you may not be a cheerleader but you sure sound defensive. Maybe LW is just plain tired of the road. I know I would be…

November 8, 2008 at 11:03 pm #38110bonesParticipantExpectations? Clapton is my all time favorite. However, I feel he has done his very best work in the past when he was using and probably ‘felt’ the blues. I do not wish him to return to that lifestyle.
Maybe the same is true with Lu and her emotional past and the way she brillantly expressed it. If this is true, I also love her just the way she is and am glad she is happy with her life. Best wishes Lu.
November 9, 2008 at 5:26 pm #38111stevarinoParticipantIt reads like a pretty positive article about the concert when I read it. Can’t wait to see the 2009 tour dates posted.
“Buick 6 opened with a 45-minute set of blistering blues-rock”
“for the 1,000 or so fans staying warm in the Burton Cummings Theatre, roots-rock goddess Lucinda Williams made everything seem OK.”
“Williams had little trouble winning over the crowd”
“it’s safe to say those listening were all smiles.”
November 10, 2008 at 1:53 am #38112dzimmyParticipantThis was the second time my wife and I saw Lucinda. Both times have been here in Winnipeg at the Burt.
The concert was outstanding! I wasn’t sure if she could top her last show but it was even better the second time round. Much more varied set that included songs from most of her albums. It’s not too often you see a musician breaking away from the setlist to take a devoted fan’s request, but we got to see that happen on Friday night at the Burt. Doug Pettibone is also a great musician. Lucinda’s band complement her very well. The sound for the show was exceptional. The band also got a very warm response from the audience as the warm up act. It was awesome hearing their version of Zep’s “Black Dog”. Lucinda road weary? I doubt it. That’s where she gets her inspiration. That’s where the crack in her beautiful unique voice comes from. The show should have been sold out, but I guess too many concert goers blew their entertainment budget dollars on Celine Dion tickets and Halloween costumes!?! Thanks for coming back to the “peg”, Lucinda. Come back again soon!November 10, 2008 at 4:18 am #38113AnonymousInactiveGlad you had a good time dzimmy. Nothing like a first hand review.
