Have been turned on to Lucinda Williams music by a friend and have been listening to her for about two months. This lady writes some of the best music I’ve listened to. I don’t have all her CD’s yet but am working on it, West, Live at the Fillmore, Essence and have ACL DVD in the mail. Having just finalized the big “D” after 23 years, her music is really a calming sensation when I needed it. As I can I will work on completing her music set as best I can.

Lucinda was on the fringes of my conciousness (enjoyed her on the radio) for a few years before I bought “World Without Tears” as a valentine present for my girlfriend (not sure 03 or 04). Several tracks struck me (the girlfriend didn’t have the same soul for music but liked it) on the first listen, and in time, all of it worked down deep into my soul. I got “Car Wheels…” in late summer 06. Two listens, and I thought, “Hell yes, it won the grammy!… It should win it several years in a row… Maybe until her next album can take the prize!”. I just got Essence, and am floored, even though I know some of the songs from my Lucinda Williams station at Pandora.com. I will be collecting the entire catalog.

I am new here, and while I haven’t joined a social forum to discuss music before, this feels so natural, as we here are on the same wavelength.

Just remembered: Hearing the duet on the radio with Lucinda and John Prine, “In Spite of Ourselves” was truly a joy, and that is how I knew that WWT was a great valentine sentiment/gesture.

HOWDY, I’m Charlie and I’m 55yer’s old. Some how in my 55 years I missed lucinda. I feel sick because those songs she sings, although I’m a man, hit home with me. I feel like I’ve been asleep for a hundred years. That’s ok because I never herd of John Prine till he came on austin city limits last week and , well, you know I went and bought every cd at the store I could find. As soon as I get done writing this I gonna get on my scoot and go do the same thing. If you know how to pray, well, pray for me. Oh, and can some one tell me what a BBCode is? What I don’t know bout a puter u could write a book about

Several years ago I heard an interview with Lucinda Williams on NPR- I think it was Scott Simon- Sat am. Since she’s from Louisiana (me too), I reminded myself to look her up. Probably two years later I heard another interview – something about Johnny Cash (I think) and I heard her name again. Finally I ordered Car Wheels, played it forever, and I was hooked. I absolutely adore her. And I love that she can describe life, love, loss and longings in Louisiana. Never seen her live 🙁 , but will be a fan forever.

    Anyone else form NOLA?

First, welcome to all the new fans / forum members. Being a relative latecomer to Lu’s music myself (more on that below), I know the feelings you are experiencing. That initial feeling of being “blown away” by the power & intimacy of Lu’s music, coupled with those “where has she been all my life” & “I have been missing out big time” feelings… 😉

I may have told this story before in another thread here, but I’ll briefly repeat it for the new folks. Like I mentioned above, I am a relative “Lu late bloomer”. I did not discover her until after “World Without Tears” was released. While I have been a huge fan of female vocalists for years, as well as roots music, blues, rock, etc., some how Lu escaped my attention all those years. In the Spring of 2003, my wife (who shares much of my taste in music) & I were in a local Barnes & Noble shopping. As I often do, I wandered back into the music section to explore & look for new music using their listening stations. I came across “World Without Tears” and gave it a listen. I immediately knew I would like it, and bought a copy.

We had some other errands to run, so I put the CD in the car CD player, and was immediately blown away (I distinctly remember remarking to my wife Sarah how incredible what we were listening to was). I was amazed at the music & lyrics I was hearing – the breadth of musical styles, the intimacy of the lyrics, the large amount of emotion displayed with such an economy of words. I knew right away I had to have everything by this incredible musician I could get my hands on.

So, never being one to resist my impulses, when I got home, I got online & ordered the rest of her studio catalog. In the five years since, I have seen Lu live 10 times or more, travelled to California, Tennessee (twice), Alabama & Kentucky to see her, met her after shows on 4 or 5 occasions, met and spoken with many other dedicated (obssessed? 😆 ) fans before & after shows – some of whom are active on this forum – and even amassed a nice collection of her gig posters (20 or so – I’ve lost count! – and need to get them framed), many of which Lu has been gracious & kind enough to sign after shows. I have also purchased multiple copies of “Car Wheels…”, “World Without Tears”, and “West” just to get different bonus tracks on different editions (even the Japanese releases of “World Without Tears” & “West”!). So, obssessed? Yeah, maybe, but I know a great musician when I see / hear her, and I welcome all you new(er) fans to the party. It’s been a great ride for me so far, and I look forward to the years / albums / shows / meetings to come…

When Lucinda came into my life, I was fourteen. That was three years ago. I’m 17 now, and I think it’s a shame that more young people like me don’t know or care about her music. The first song I ever heard of hers was Car Wheels, when, coincidentally, I was in a car on my way home form D.C. I thought, who IS this?? Her words just strike home more than anybody else I’ve listened to…even Bob Dylan. I really hope I get to meet her one day. She’s my hero.

    I thought that was me…

I’ll have to tell my story at another time, as I am living it as we speak…

I had just bought a new Telecaster, when surfing the Telecaster forum someone asked about LU’s Esquire. This was a couple of years ago and I decided to give this woman a listen. I was hooked!!! I’ve been preaching the gospel of Lucinda ever since. BTW put me down as another biker she can bring to tears. I’m going to try and catch the Greensboro, NC show. It’s about a 4 hour drive/ride for me.

I had heard about Lucinda for a few years before I ever heard her music. As a huge Dylan fan, several people told me I’d probably like her music, but for whatever reason I didn’t check her out until my sophomore year in college. I remember getting Car Wheels and listening to it over and over again, followed by picking up the self-titled album and some fond memories of listening to I Just Wanted to See You So Bad while I drove my car in the middle of the night to visit my girlfriend at college (who I’ll be marrying two months from today 🙂 ) because, well, I just wanted to see her so bad. My first Lu show was in fall of ’05 in Chicago. At that point, I hadn’t picked up World Without Tears yet, and the heartstopping rendition of Ventura she opened with that night still ranks up near the top of performances I’ve ever seen.

I’ve seen her eight times now, I think, which means I’ve seen her play more than any other artist except for Dylan. I’m looking forward to adding three shows to that total this fall.

I’m a 61 year old hippie with a haircut. I discovered LU just last year and like ya’ll it was a total love that “lit my fire” for, let’s admit it, better or worse. I love everything LU sings. It was a total rush, a feeling that I’d never experienced before. I think I said it well in a previous post that her lyrics, although fairly simple in their form are profound, or something like that. I’m not very good at getting my feelings from the gray matter to my fingers to the forum post. Jagger and Richards and company have been my main source of rock music, since the sixties. They are amazing guys, totally committed to the cause. I remember when I was 20ish, hitch-hiking on a dark road somewhere in the middle of North Carolina in the middle of the night heading for Florida for no good reason. It was pitch black deep in the woods of N.C., scary and solitary, and I sang “Down Home Girl” at the top of my lungs for company and I was happy and unafraid and naieve.

Anyway, enough rambling. Excuse me! Thanks LU for your music. This guy loves it ALL!!!
