ParticipantIt is done. What a monumental task. I thought Lu was going to implode. After two weeks of nearly non-stop Bob listening and a constant whittling down of the list– with many great suggestions coming in here and on FB — it went from 25 to 12 and then down to about the six finalists, which kept changing also-but in the end it got down to:
Everything Is Broken
Tryin’ To Get To Heaven
It’s Alright Ma, I’m Only Bleeding
North Country Blues
Tears Of Rage
Ain’t Talkin’
And finally on the day we went to the studio it was basically down to the first two on the above list. The idea was that we would run thru both of them with the band, and see if one of them clicked but the first one they tried really started to come together fast so the second one never got a chance.
And the winner is….
Tryin’ To Get To HeavenThanks for all the great suggestions -it was very interesting to see what came up and many that did got into the last 10-15.
Now on to the McCartney project-but that’s a separate thread.September 14, 2011 at 1:52 am #48163Lefty
ParticipantA worthy winner, TO. One of Bob’s latter-day masterpieces, imho. Looking forward to Lucinda’s interpretation 8)
The air is getting hotter
There’s a rumbling in the skies
I’ve been wading through the high muddy water
With the heat rising in my eyes
Every day your memory grows dimmer
It doesn’t haunt me like it did before
I’ve been walking through the middle of nowhere
Trying to get to heaven before they close the doorWhen I was in Missouri
They would not let me be
I had to leave there in a hurry
I only saw what they let me see
You broke a heart that loved you
Now you can seal up the book and not write anymore
I’ve been walking that lonesome valley
Trying to get to heaven before they close the doorPeople on the platforms
Waiting for the trains
I can hear their hearts a-beatin’
Like pendulums swinging on chains
I tried to give you everything
That your heart was longing for
I’m just going down the road feeling bad
Trying to get to heaven before they close the doorI’m going down the river
Down to New Orleans
They tell me everything is gonna be all right
But I don’t know what “all right” even means
I was riding in a buggy with Miss Mary-Jane
Miss Mary-Jane got a house in Baltimore
I been all around the world, boys
Now I’m trying to get to heaven before they close the doorGonna sleep down in the parlor
And relive my dreams
I’ll close my eyes and I wonder
If everything is as hollow as it seems
Some trains don’t pull no gamblers
No midnight ramblers like they did before
I been to Sugar Town, I shook the sugar down
Now I’m trying to get to heaven before they close the doorSeptember 14, 2011 at 12:20 pm #48164Lefty
ParticipantInteresting. Just realized that bobdylan.com lists a couple of lines from the third stanza as:
I tried to give you everything
That your heart was longing forBut, on “Time Out of Mind,” Bob sings instead:
When you think that you lost everything
You find out you can always lose a little moreWhat Bob actually sings is MUCH better; hope Lucinda does the same!

ParticipantLefty –Funny that you mention that as those were her favorite lines in the song, and a big reason why she really loved the song. On the other hand she wasn’t as crazy with the lines about “ridin in buggy with Miss Mary Jane, Miss Mary Jane’s got a house in Baltimore”. She was wondering what that had to do with the rest of the song and thought he probably just put it in there because it rhymed. She was trying to decide if she could skip them, but knew that it’s Bob and she couldn’t really do that. It was funny to watch her wrestle with it.
We actually found a lot of lyrical discrepancies from the recorded versions to what’s listed on bobdylan.com, which I thought was kind of odd.September 15, 2011 at 1:34 am #48168parkerca
