I believe the only Lucinda LPs being reissued are “World Without Tears” and “Little Honey” both on clear vinyl.

I’ve only heard four “demo” songs that were released as a bonus when West came out; but I liked all four of them more than the officially released versions.

but there are 6 of them. what if, unsuffer me, rescue, where’s my love, learning how to live & everything has changed. what are the ones you’re missing?

Actually the only one that was originally coming in June was Essence but it wasn’t going to be remastered for vinyl, which you really have to do, so I delayed it. The ones that have already come out on vinyl at one point have been mastered for vinyl so those may come first.

Was “World Without Tears” and ” Little Honey” promoted as being released at one point. For some reason I was thinking it was advertised through Lost Highway early on this year.

To punchdrunklove: Of the songs you listed, the ones I haven’t heard are: Learning How To Live & Everything Has Changed.

West was actually my first Lucinda Williams album ever! So it will always have a special place for me.

I can easily say that West is my least favorite Lucinda Williams album, but I have to qualify that statement by adding that I still think it’s a pretty good album with a few really good songs. The high points may not be quite as high as the high points of other albums, but that doesn’t make it bad.

Probably the worst thing I can say about it is that the songs I really love (Unsuffer Me, Where Is My Love? and Rescue) are better live than on the album. I have a bootleg from ’05 that’s a compilation of songs that later ended up on West and Little Honey (I think it’s just called New Songs 2005 or something like that), with a live version of Rescue that’s exquisite. I don’t know where it was recorded, but it’s a unique live recording in that the crowd chatter (of which there’s a fair amount) somehow adds to the already-great performance.

Got an email from Lost Highway that West is now available again on LP.

Hmmmm. Interesting, I suppose it is complimentary in that Lu is included in a short list that includes The Beatles, Bob Dylan & Wilco? 😉

Rather than considering it a “punishing 9 minutes”, I like “Wrap My Head Around That”. In fact, it came up on my iPod on “Lu shuffle play” on the drive home from Macon last night, and I “endured” the whole song happily. But then again, I AM a cheerleader, ya know… 😉

I love the way you’re looking at this, Tom! 🙂

I have to admit I’m kind of lost when it comes to this thread — West is high on my list of Lucinda albums, and I absolutely love “Wrap My Head Around That.” Even though it does push 9 minutes, there was a time a few weeks ago that I listened to it on repeat. Admittedly, that was because it pretty much perfectly described what I was going through at the time, better than I ever could (which is true of just about every Lucinda song, come to think of it). Maybe you have to be in the right place in life for it.

I dont understand any negativity about West, i rate it as one of her best albums. Even though all of them are at least 8/10.

I don’t think it’s any coincidence that the list has those artists on it as the one thing they all have in common is that they are fearless when it comes to their art. They are all risk takers and when you have that element you are going to have some experiments that might not work at times. But that risk taking also leads to greatness also. Lucinda is obviously particular about what she puts out but she is also very brave in that aspect. (i’ve always wanted to write a piece on why I think World Without Tears is one the riskiest records put out in a long long time-maybe ever) I think Wrap My Head underlines her fearlessness. Did we know it was potentially a “divisive” track, to use Popmatters word–yes definitely we knew it was something really different -we viewed it a talking blues done by the Velvet Underground. Could it have been left off-I suppose but we wanted some variety and the record felt different without it. The irony is that i’ve always been disappointed that we actually had a longer version where at the end Bill Frisell goes really psycho on the guitar -think Jimi Hendrix goes to mars-and Doug is right there dueling with him. Somewhere along the way most of that got edited out and I think now that that big crazy payoff at the end really needed to be there. With a track like that you gotta have that payoff but of course at that point is would’ve been about 12 minutes long. One of the greatest studio memories I personally have is summoning up the courage to tell one of our greatest living musicians, Mr. Frisell to “just go for it” at the end of Wrap My Head and he said “ok” and proceeded to play some of the most ferocious guitar I’ve ever heard. Unfortuntely it all didn’t make the cut, but probably just as well as it was pretty out there. But it was noting compared the completely off the hook version of Bone Of Contention that we tried during the Little Honey recordings -now that was really out there, but that’s another story.
