Garland Jeffreys’ new album “The King of In Between” is another classic by the “Bard of Brooklyn” and runs the gamut from rock to blues to reggae to soul. Every track is a stand out: ‘Til John Lee Hooker Calls Me, The Contortionist, Streetwise, I’m Alive……

P.S. How about some co-bills with Ms. Lucinda and Mr. Jeffreys?

“I don’t know if I’ve ever spent as much time or worked as hard on a record in my life,” Jeffreys said recently. “It really took about five years, all told, to make. Plus, this album was self-financed. So, in every way,” he chuckles, “I was pretty much going for broke.”

    You done good, Garland ❗

Saw Garland perform last Sunday night at the Oneonta Theatre. In the aftermath of Hurricane Irene, there could not have been more than 20 in attendance. Sad. GJ seemed unfazed; he and long-time associate Al Freedman put on a terrific show, including Bob’s “She Belongs to Me” and “Corrina, Corrina.” Garland shook everybody’s hand at least once and gladly signed my copy of “Grinder’s Switch.” Thought I heard him say to someone between sets that he was going to be on Letterman Sept. 7. If you ever have a chance to see this man perform, you won’t be disappointed! Sixty-eight years old with a voice that sounds ageless.

Note to the burgeoning Amos Lee fan club here: I’d venture to say that Garland is Amos’s unofficial godfather. 8)

Interesting tweet discovered while doing my every now and then Lu twitter search.

An indirect gratuitous thank you to Lefty—from Mr. Jeffreys. 😉

    From Garland’s website:

Larry Campbell recorded for and co-produced The King Of In Between…Larry arranged and played the strings on “Streetwise”. He also played guitar on “The Contortionist”, “‘Til John Lee Hooker Calls Me”, “Rock and Roll Music”, “The Beautiful Truth” and “In God’s Waiting Room.” Some of the other artists contributing to the album include Steve Jordan, Mike Merritt, Duke Levine, Duncan Sheik, and Lou Reed.

Larry Campbell and I met at the old Kenny’s Castaways on the Upper East Side back in the day. We figured it must’ve been then because when we met at my place to talk about making The King Of In Between, it brought back a few memories. We started off on a good foot when he said he liked a couple songs I played him; we immediately started talking about various players and we were off to the races.

I’ve never had such a clear sense about someone being the right person for me to work with. His suggestions, ideas, playing, arrangements and direction…his whole manner was something new to me, despite my many years of recording.

We worked closely and wasted no time getting the basics recorded. The band of Steve Jordan, Duke Levine, Brian Mitchell, Mike Merritt, Larry, and me were locked in from day one. Several of the songs were “live” in the studio: one-take renditions with vocal intact. Preparation for the sessions was succinct, without any wasted time. The entire experience making this album with Larry was without glitches or conflicts and the end result was beyond what I’d expected. Thanks Larry, for your friendship and great judgment. – Garland Jeffreys

YAY! 😀 Plus, Bryan Cranston from “Breaking Bad” will be Dave’s guest, too.

Garland Jeffreys performed a killer version of Coney Island Winter on Late Show – on YouTube at http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=r56Py-iNLgU.
