The “Lafayette” lines Lu speaks about in this interview are the exact ones she was pondering at the Covington show. I have to say she was receiving positive audience appreciation at the Covington show and in Minneapolis during this song. I didn’t notice it as much in Bloomington, but the other two shows, definitely. I’m glad she has revived it and I LOVE the current band arrangement that is accompanying this tune.
“What is it about the simple, earlier songs that people are drawn to?” she asked rhetorically. “I’ll do ‘Lafayette’ with those lines about ‘drinkin’ and ‘jivin’ and ‘oh those boys in Lafayette, smiling so pretty.'” She laughed at the simplicity of a lyric written so long ago. “Oh God, but people love it.

It’s like the line “My brother knows where the best bars are” from “Crescent City” – a simple lyric that everyone seems drawn to (I know I am), shouting it out in unison when Lu sings it… 😉

The 5 ladies behind me at the Bloomington show were telling me beforehand they wanted to hear “Crescent City”. During the show, they kept yelling for it, and by the middle of the set, the yells were turning into slurs. 😆 I wonder if they, too, would have shouted out that line ❓

I think it has more to do with the rythym of the songs (can’t explain I’m not a musician…but I know what I like) leading to those lines-
another line I love is from Circles and X’s-
“You head down the drive and hope the Chevy decides to start”
