Surely, by “just”, you don’t mean you posted this brief message from your car moments after crossing the bridge, do you stoger? If so, that must mean you’ve joined the ranks of the “smartphone totin'” set! 😉

On a related note, there’s a brief mention here at indystar.com of tonight’s show at The Vogue (although I certainly wouldn’t classify Lu as “Pop Music”…)

1 I Just Wanted to See You so Bad
[interlude where two crazed groupies up front hold up a “Welcome” and a “Blake” sign respectively]
2 Can’t Let Go [false start, no big deal]
    3 People Talkin’
4 2 Kool 2 B 4 Gotten (Flannery O’Connor gets a nod beforehand, along with Messrs. Adams and Imes)
    5 Fruits of My Labor
6 Steal Your Love (guitar tech Nick fiddles with Lu’s plug early in it, then she abandons the guitar altogether for this rousing number which she calls after “the best that song ever sounded”)
    7 Don’t Know How You’re Livin’
    8 Born to Be Loved
    9 Concrete and Barbed Wire
    10 I Lost It
    11 Buttercup
12 Drunken Angel (harmonica-less, but fine)
    13 Convince Me
    14 Seeing Black
    15 Essence
    16 Unsuffer Me
17 Real Live Bleeding Fingers and Broken Guitar Strings
    18 Changed the Locks

    23 For What It’s Worth

Hot night at the Vogue, little talk between songs but Lu and band smoking. Tom Overby affirmed and jigged visibly from the wings, throughout. Despite “lafayette” sending me repeated text messages in the early evening about the nature of tonight’s opening act, there. . . was no opening act. Doors at 7, but it became clear c. 8:15 that the crew was prepping (not to say stalling) toward a Lucinda walk-on. Packed crowd, good one for the most part. Blake Mills more than held his own, more than one fine solo break, even further letting go to look forward to in future shows I suspect. We spoke briefly with him afterward, also David. Lu’s sister Karen was present, and she patiently signed for fans while shivering in the parking lot, then boarding the bus with family and guests. Cool debut, and hopefully lafayette and others will supplement this report.

Good report Stoger. So Blake already has fans holding up signs?

Imagine my surprise after receiving an email from the road warrior, suggesting we hold signs to welcome Blake to the band. This, from one in the same, who politely declined holding a “Blessed” sign at the Nelsonville, OH show. Of course, that involved being included in a photograph — perhaps said warrior is a bit camera shy. I happily assumed sign making duties (love this kind of stuff). Yep, those two crazies were none other than yours truly and the road warrior. Stoger held his “Welcome” sign above my “Blake!” sign. We were in front near Lu’s microphone on David’s side, however, Blake saw the sign as well as Lu, who made a point to show to Blake. Stoger shirked his duties, however, as the game plan also called to hold up said signs after Blake was introduced during band intros. He must have been lost in the magnifence of the show. I came thru, though, and another smile from Blake rounded out the night.

I have some additional musings, just a few, but am short on time and will report back later.

Great night. Good crowd. Blake was really hot, and Lucinda’s voice was crystal clear. So glad I could attend.

Welcome to all the new posters here!

Stoger, I was under the impression there was an opening act. I saw it posted somewhere…facebook I think, however, I’ve been without internet (until today) since Tuesday. Obviously, no opening act.

Additional musings on last night’s show.

Lu was wearing black button down shirt opened showing a black bustier type top underneath, black jeans, and these rocking black motorcyle type boots with rhinestone straps for those into her fashion attire.

Blake was wearing…oh, never mind. 😆

Blake received an “I’m not worthy” wave from Lucinda after “Convince Me.” I’m so glad that song made it into the setlist. Love that song, recorded version and live version. Lu was smiling from ear to ear many times during the show.

I jumped for joy when I saw “Steal Your Love” on the setlist. I know Lu doesn’t care for that song too much (she has said in past it doesn’t measure up to her standards looking back on it) but after last night, I hope that changes. The beginning of the song was a little shaky, however, it started gelling, after the first couple of lines, into this amazing, amazing version. As stoger noted, Lu acknowledged it as well.

The second encore was interesting. Lu thanked the audience (again) for coming (after the first encore), left the stage, and the house music came on. Eric had to shine his flashlight into the upper deck (it’s baseball season) to signal Lu was coming back. Great rendition of “For What’s It’s Worth”.

The audience response (and love) from this show was incredible. I rate it as second of the shows I’ve attended behind The Orange Peel last month. I don’t think anything can top that show.

A Mellencamp friend of mine came to the show last night. She has been wanting to see Lu headline since she saw her open for JM at Riverbend in Cincinnati in 2008. She almost came to Bloomington last month but couldn’t make it because of weather. She was blown away by last night’s appearance. She left a message for Lu on her facebook page I know she won’t mind me sharing here, as well as one on my page.

    Lu’s page:

I attended my 1st show last night @ the Vogue in Indy and all I can say is WOW! I was blown away! I expected it to be great, but the show I saw was so incredible, full of emotion and energy, that it was as though I’d had a religious experience. I danced, I sang, I listened, I watched, and I felt so intensely, so much of what you sang. I felt so blessed to be a part of the audience last night. Thank you.

    my page:

saw Lucinda Williams last night at the Vogue with Mary Caroline Schoeff! What an amazing performance! She is incredible!! We thoroughly enjoyed every minute of her performance, and hanging out after the show at the bus! Cindy Briggs, it was SOOO great to see you and hang out!! We’ll have to do it again FOR SURE!

One more thing. The winner of the two tickets (from facebook contest) for last night’s show was standing behind me. She was absolutely thrilled to be there.

Minor interjection here. Not sure where it came from that Lu doesn’t think Steal Your Love is up to her usual standards as that is not the case -she loves it and when it was mentioned in TT’s setlist compiling thread that it hadn’t been played much I thought we needed to bring that one back -I also had a hunch that Blake would really dig into that song -and he did. Lu was right -it was the best i’ve ever heard it.
I think you’ll see several more less played gems come back. We were talking about that very topic last night after the show with Blake because he obviously recently learned everything so he can put a fresh spin on a lot things that haven’t been played much. That setlist.fm site is going to come in handy -so all of TT’s work was not for naught.

TO — I could have sworn I heard her talk about “Steal Your Love” (possibly the New York live shows in 2007) as one she just didn’t think was up to her standards. I stand corrected. It kicked *ss last night.
