Once again, I enjoyed the opener (Lea again) from a nice angle stage-left and up. Twenty minutes later after chatting with Lea and Matt at merch, I returned to find a texting gent in my seat. He was having nothing of my showing my ticket stub or gesturing in any language. I took the high road and gave him an opening by saying I guessed it didn’t matter too much given the empty seats, to which he replied (in admittedly fluent English) QUOTE yes go sit somewhere else UNQUOTE. Well, that worked out from another seat until about five songs into Lu’s set, when a couple moved over next to me (admittedly to avoid some other chatterers), and one of them knocked the flannel shirt I had put on the empty seat to the ground, sending my ticket stub, dead cellphone, fountain pen, and calendar I sometimes take notes in skittering to the floor. But who I am to criticize my fellow crowd members? Oh, after Get Right and Honeybee someone shouted out a request, prompting about a half dozen other members of the Herd to do the same. Lu turned her back to the house and then wheeled around, launching into Honeybee. Good for her.

By that time I was standing next to soundboard, waiting for my seat nemesis to descend when the house lights came up. I planned to ask him if the sightlines were as satisfactory for him from my seat as they were for me during the first 40 minutes of music, but he fled by a rear door. Probably not a lot of irony-reception in this guy’s antennae anyway. Harrumph!

I would have said “I thought I killed you in the war!” Admittedly you are more diplomatic. Good going.

“seat nemesis,” indeed, stoger. That’s outrageous. As I recall, there was a similar interloper at the Ryman show (white-haired photographer dude). We could write a manifesto on concert etiquette.

Oh, that Ryman guy was like a Mensa/gifted/Rockefeller award winner compared to the Utrecht goofball. Thanks all for commenting.

That would be one Alan Messer.
