Absolutely amazing. 🙂 Thanks for filling us in, Tom.

And I agree with tntracy that a box set of unreleased songs and early/alternate takes, a la Dylan’s Bootleg Series, would be incredible!

Found these on a data base.
Who knows if these are the correct titles, but a few listed seem unfamiliar.

Lucinda Williams – demos, Austin, TX, -84
    6 tracks, 14:52 (on NYC demos 84). A. New!
Hot Blood / Out Of Touch / Through Venetian Blinds / I Bet It’d Be Good / That’s What I’m Living For / Hard Times
Notes: Lucinda & guitar. I’m missing “Pineola” and “Six Blocks Away” which are supposed to be the first 2 tracks on this session.

—Lucinda Williams – demos, NYC, -82
    9 tracks, 34:35, 1 CDR. A. New!
All I Want / Pancakes / Walking After Midnight / And All That Jazz / Abandoned / Making Believe / Send Me A Letter(?) / I Wonder Will I Ever Be Back Home(?) / Pineola
A quick review leads me to believe some of them are indeed Demos of songs written by others.

Did some more research on these Demo songs.
    1. Through Venetian Blinds -written by Edward Heyman in 1936
    2. I Bet It’d Be Good-no clue
    3. That’s What I’m Living For-no clue
    4. Hard Times-written by Stephen C. Foster in 1854
    5. All I Want-Joni Mitchell in her album “Blue” 1971
    6. Walking After Midnight-originally recorded by Patsy Clyne in 1957
6a. And All That Jazz-from the musical “Chicago” 1975
    7. Abandoned-OK we know this LW song
    8. Making Believe-written by Jimmy Work and performed by Emmylou Harris in 1980
9.I Wonder Will I Ever Be Back Home-This was the interesting one to discover. This is a line from “Cool Drink of Water Blues” written by Tommy Johnson in 1928 and the song starts off with the familiar(from LW’s S/T) I asked for water he gave me gasoline) Lu’s published song is much shorter than the original.
Here we can listen to Tommy Johnson

Finally, how would someone on the internet ever get hold of these Lucinda demos?

Most of these are actually Lucinda songs-i’ll go thru them:
    1) The song is called Venetian Blinds and is an early Lu song
    2) I Bet It’d Be Good–early Lu song
    3) That’s What I’m Living For – I don’t think this is a Lu song but can’t remember–it’s come up before
    4) Hard Times–early Lu song
    5) All I Want -early Lu song
    6) yes this is the Patsy song
6a) An early Lu song called Jazz Side Of Life that she recently updated the lyrics to -it was given serious consideration for the new record but was not recorded -actually Lu brought this topic up a couple of nights ago—questioning whether we should have tried to record it for this record. It’s a great song and I would guess it will show up on the next one.
    7) Abandoned -on the RT album
    8) Makin’ Believe– not a Lu song -may be the one you found but I think it’s a different song than that
    9) This is actually called Goin’ Back Home–not a Lu song but was one of the bonus tracks on the 2nd version of the RT record

Hey TO I really appreciate your prompt response to my Lost Songs search, especially with a West Coast tour starting soon and the release of “Blessed”.
I enjoy researching Lucinda’s career on the web ( remember the fun we all had on “This Blue” ) and can only dig into what I see to comment and now you have totally blown me away that most of these songs are actually Lucinda songs.
    Let’s hear em’ sometime.
Thanks again and we all hope the first part of the following comes to fruition on the tour. Part 2 is a given.

For all those fans including me who don’t have the bonus version have a listen to the Blues. Lu is accompanied on guitar and harmonica by Taj Mahal.(recorded in studio in 1983).

Song is also on the album “Every Woman’s Blues” released May 30, 2006.

More maybe lost songs for TOverby to comment on.
Here is the artwork from a presumeably bootleg called Lucinda Williams Rarities 2 that I saved a while back.[attachment=0:3gho34ns]tn_lucindawilliams_rarities2_all.jpg[/attachment:3gho34ns]
The obvious rarities that I don’t recognize are:
    1. A Different sky
    2. Breakfast in Bed
    3. Door # 1
    4. Glory Dreams
    5. Reunion
The only one I was able to track was “Breakfast in Bed” . Lu appears in a nice duet on Donnie Fritt’s album from 1997 called “Everybody’s Got a Song”. You can listen to a clip of this on Amazon.

Hey punchdrunklove, great detective work thanks for tracking these down. I saw some of the artists names you found when I googled the song title but couldn’t find the link to Lucinda. (Forgot all about wikipedia-maybe our moderator can up date for the first two songs).
Now the challenge still remains to listen to the 4 other songs.

As I have sort of taken it upon myself to keep this list up to date on Lu’s Wikipedia page (having made several additions to it over the last several years), I just added them. But, not before verifying the guest appearances, as well as the album names (Artifacts Of Love by Lisa Mednick & Love & Trust by Michael Fracasso).

I also listened to snippets from the songs at allmusic.com. You can definitely hear Lu on the Michael Fracasso track, but I was not able to pick out Lu’s voice on the brief sample for the Lisa Mednick track. But, I was able to verify the latter through song credits I found elsewhere…

Two more to add to my spreadsheet, too – thanks for the find, LWJ & PDL… 😉

    Tom

P.S. I already have the other three tracks…

Thanks Tom for up dating Wikipedia, the list just keeps growing and growing.
Question. How does the Allmusic site get updated?

p.s.Hopefully new songs to relish in and to discuss starting tomorrow night at the Majestic Ventura Theatre.

This song has been covered by many artists besides Lu including Dusty Springfield, Joan Osborne, Shelby Lynne and UB 40 / Chrissie Hynde.
So since this is very topical for Lu’s new tour here’s UB 40 with Chrissie Hynde from 1988.
