Lu said she doesn’t like to read reviews of her own music. Well, nonetheless, here’s mine for tonight, which I emailed to a couple of friends just after the show:
Missing: one Roof. Last seen attached to the El Rey Theatre. If spotted, call 1-800-LUCINDA.
😆
Back tomorrow!
September 6, 2007 at 9:03 am #33481giovinctuParticipantWho was the special guest?
September 6, 2007 at 1:47 pm #33482Jpayne1ParticipantShelby Lynne sang Still I Long For Your Kiss and Ann Wilson sang Get Right With God with her….Yeah, man…Where do we start? Lu had a lot of fun, you can tell by the vibe that everything was right on.

September 6, 2007 at 3:41 pm #33485TimParticipantThought the show was great last night. Lucinda and the band came on at 9:15 and discounting the 20 minute intermission, they didn’t leave until 12:15. The band was augmented with another guitarist; His name was Curt; it sounded like his last name was Messer or something like it. He had played with The Eels before; which is the band Butch Norton was in. He really helped fill out the sound. He played alot of electric ( acoustic on “Words”), lap steel on a few (in addition to Doug’s playing on three songs), and a few songs on keyboard. He held down the fort when Doug was playing his solos but also took alot of well done solos himself. It sounded like he’ll be with them at least thru the LA shows.
They did the 13 songs of “World Without Tears”, which took 80 minutes, then took a short break and came back with “Rescue”. I don’t have a setlist but will mention songs that I can remember. :Words, Fancy Funeral, Jailhouse Tears, Come On, Pineola, Still I Long For Your Kiss, Honey Bee, Unsuffer Me, I Live My Life, Get Right With God. The band was really cooking, and Lu was in great voice. I’ve got the CD from the first set but haven’t listened to it yet.
The performance was also filmed by Gravel Roads Production for what Lucinda said was, “A low-key documentary”. That has me excited because I thought it was a special show. Hopefully Inside Job can get back to us and tell us when and where this will be made available.September 6, 2007 at 3:54 pm #33486paul_from_losangelesParticipantTruly a marvelous evening…from the focused, mellow audience to the beautiful red curtain, the vibes were amazing. Lu’s band was joined by Chet Lyster of the Eels, who played guitar and keyboards for most of the songs. The opening set, as promised, was the 13-song “World Without Tears”, performed in album sequence. Lucinda wore a stunning turquoise dress with a grey top and heels. After the main set, there was a quiet 20-minute intermission with the curtain drawn. Lucinda returned in jeans, T-shirt, and sneakers, for a second set of Rescue, Words, Fancy Funeral, Pineola, Jailhouse Tears, Come On, Honeybee, Unsuffer Me, Still I Long For Your Kiss (with Shelby Lynne), Joy, I Live My Life, and Get Right With God (with Ann Wilson from Heart).
September 6, 2007 at 4:10 pm #33487stellablueeeParticipanti’m so appreciative to hear about the show…thanks again…
do you mind posting how much the cds are?
by the way, the curfew for the el rey is 12:30 on weeknights, but 2:30 on weekends….whoo hoo!!!!September 6, 2007 at 4:12 pm #33488MTParticipantThe tickets are in my car. I skipped last night but am going to the rest of them. Off at 12:15? It looks like the 90 miles drive back home solo tonight will be later than I thought. Still, three hours on stage? 🙂
How much are the CDs?
September 6, 2007 at 4:13 pm #33489LeftyParticipantThank you for the comments – – hope to hear more!
8) 8)September 6, 2007 at 4:19 pm #33490TimParticipantThanks Paul for the guitarists name. I thought he did a great job last night. Can’t wait for tonight; Essence should be fantastic!
The CD’s were $20, and were available just before the second set started. They were doing the work right at the booth during the intermission.September 6, 2007 at 4:23 pm #33491giovinctuParticipantCan somebody buy a live CD for me? I can only attend the Saturday show. I think I’m gonna get several copies of the Car wheels on a gravel road live version and see if somebody want to trade.
September 6, 2007 at 9:02 pm #33492RayParticipantThanks much for these reports! Hearing the comments from LA is like a tease — can’t wait for NYC…. I just hope Lu doesn’t wear out by the time she gets east again. 🙂
curious about the form of the album set — was there conversation with the audience in the first set, between songs? Did the band stay pretty close to the sound of the album, or play around with the songs? How did it go? With a change of clothes, it almost sounds like that first set was formal, in a way, before they loosened up for the rest of the concert.
Wish i was there, but I’ll look forward to that low-key documentary….
September 6, 2007 at 10:06 pm #33493TimParticipantRay, it sounded to me as if all the between songs goings on was included (Lucinda talking, Lucinda stopping “Minneapolis” because of playing a wrong chord, etc). The only thing that was excised that I can tell is when she went into “Words Fell”. She played it for about a minute and then abruptly stopped it. She didn’t like the sound of her guitar and there was a few minutes banter after. The false take (if you want to call it that) is not on the CD, but it picks up right where she was questioning whose fault the sound was. So you do hear a minute or so of her talking, but if you weren’t at the show you wouldn’t know that she had played the song for a verse or so and then stopped it. I would say that they stuck pretty much to the structure of the album versions. It was a little different with two guitars behind her, but I think it really was an improvement. “Words Fell” was done solo with just her acoustic. “Overtime” had Doug playing his parts and the new guy playing a lap steel over it.
I think that Lucinda and the band will be just as charged up for the NYC shows. The CD comes in a nice sleeve with pics & credits on it.September 6, 2007 at 10:49 pm #33494giovinctuParticipantThanx for the review, Tim!
