Okay, like “God I’m Missing You” from Kin: Songs by Mary Karr & Rodney Crowell, I have downloaded this song and then listened carefully to piece together the lyrics. I’ll admit, I struggled with this one a bit more than “God I’m Missing You”, probably due to Lu’s breathy, emotive vocals. I had to listen to a YouTube video of Mr. Chapman performing the song live, and then another cover of the song to figure out some parts, then listened to Lu’s version again to verify. I think I have these down to a “T” – here they are:
Just a memory in the distance
Just a long lost railroad line
A thread that can’t be broken
That runs through your life and through mine
I love it when you want me
I love it when you care
You know I don’t scare easy
But I do get scared
When it’s that time of night
Nothing seems to turn out right
And dreams can drift right out of sight
When it’s that time of night
We have left behind
Places others never get to
There are some places hard to find
And you recall and I forget to
Sometimes you make me wonder
Will I stumble, will I fall
Take me for what I am
Or not at all
It’s that time of night
And nothing seems to work out right
And dreams can drift right out of sight
When it’s that time of night
When it’s that time of night
Lovers start to fuss and fight
Over what is wrong and what is right
It’s that time of night
That time of night
Another beautiful, beautiful song…
TO, despite your saying that you think this song is different musically than anything Lu has ever recorded, I found it sonically very similar to “Kiss Like Your Kiss” – the version with Elvis Costello from the True Blood soundtrack. At least, I think the lead-in to that song has a very similar “sound” to this one.
Well done again, Lu!
