Participantreally great. you’re wife is awesome, tom!
very serene and dark, minimal and graceful, so graceful. and i agree that there’s nothing quite like it in her catalogue, but there are songs in BLESSED that have this ‘feel’, such as born to be loved/kiss like your kiss minus the repetitions/circular structure.
this song seemed like straight out of nick cave’s THE BOATMAN’S CALL. (a high compliment.)
and i never heard of this guy before. i’ll correct that.

KeymasterOk I’m a big fan of this song. Great song by Lu and great playing by all 3 fellers.

Participant[off-topic]
lucinda sould cover ‘into my arms’ someday, someway. for a song that starts with a bizarre, clunky verse such as ‘i don’t believe in an interventionist god’ the rest is pretty much Heaven.

Participanta friend pointed to me that the percussion section of the song is reminiscent of ‘broken butterflies’, and i can see that, actually. (and he agrees with me that the vocals are somewhat kiss like your kiss-y.)
still a very nice song. went to bed, woke up, listened to it again: still up there.

KeymasterI agree with you Punch that Lu’s singing is reminiscent of Kiss Like Your Kiss.
Note my use of a big word. 😆

ParticipantInteresting observations as it was all done very spontaneously. We had the tempo set and Doug came up with the guitar loop/part and it all just went from there.
We all recorded the Jesse Winchester song in the same session–it was a long night but very successful.

ParticipantOn my first listen, I too, felt as though this had been recorded in the “Blessed” sessions which I thought was interesting since I knew Doug was playing on this song and had not on “Blessed.”
Lu’s vocals are absolutely breathtaking to listen to these past few years, this song included. No one can sing with raw emotion better than her.

ParticipantOkay, like “God I’m Missing You” from Kin: Songs by Mary Karr & Rodney Crowell, I have downloaded this song and then listened carefully to piece together the lyrics. I’ll admit, I struggled with this one a bit more than “God I’m Missing You”, probably due to Lu’s breathy, emotive vocals. I had to listen to a YouTube video of Mr. Chapman performing the song live, and then another cover of the song to figure out some parts, then listened to Lu’s version again to verify. I think I have these down to a “T” – here they are:
Just a memory in the distance
Just a long lost railroad line
A thread that can’t be broken
That runs through your life and through mineI love it when you want me
I love it when you care
You know I don’t scare easy
But I do get scaredWhen it’s that time of night
Nothing seems to turn out right
And dreams can drift right out of sight
When it’s that time of nightWe have left behind
Places others never get to
There are some places hard to find
And you recall and I forget toSometimes you make me wonder
Will I stumble, will I fall
Take me for what I am
Or not at allIt’s that time of night
And nothing seems to work out right
And dreams can drift right out of sight
When it’s that time of night
When it’s that time of nightLovers start to fuss and fight
Over what is wrong and what is right
It’s that time of night
That time of nightAnother beautiful, beautiful song…
TO, despite your saying that you think this song is different musically than anything Lu has ever recorded, I found it sonically very similar to “Kiss Like Your Kiss” – the version with Elvis Costello from the True Blood soundtrack. At least, I think the lead-in to that song has a very similar “sound” to this one.
Well done again, Lu!
Tom
