This is a place holder. I expect a report on NY City Winery Night Five from other, because I could get it close but not as accurate as our designated scribe.

Wow… I would have been undone by the Unsuffer Me, Blessed, Doors of Heaven run of songs. Thanks, DDinNJ!

    House of Earth
Words by Woody Guthrie, Music by Lucinda Williams
Come to my House of Earth if you would like
For me to give your old time feelings back.

Come here to my house of good rich earth if you
Would like me teach your wife a thing or two.

Come here to this legal illegal place for joys
And teach your wife this way to grow new boys.

I’ll take you by your had and show you whirls
Of these same feelings that grow pretty girls.

I’ll wash your feet a couple of times a day
Till all your old time sorrows melt away.

You leave some drops of honey on my couch
I leave a couple of dollars in your pouch.

My house of earth is the richest land in town
I pity those dead ones that at me frown.

SO come to my house of earth and learn it’s worth
A few green folded bills to learn of birth.

I’ll kiss you in such odd and natural ways
Your wife will then find out that kissing pays.

Two times a day I’ll wash you in my tub
Ten times a day I’ll pat your skin and rub.

Call me a prostitute and a whore, too,
I do these tricks your wife refuses to.

I swear by all my bibles you won’t regret
I’ve never met a man that’s sorry yet.

I love you once to teach you all your life
The things to do when you are with your wife.

Your wife should be quite glad and proud of me
For waking both of you up these things to see.

My house of earth runs down with wine and rum
Lots of different ways here you can come.

If you do come I will be glad to see
If you don’t come I’m glad you don’t need me.

I’ll furnish red hot kisses and the hole
That wakes up sleeping sickness in your soul.

    “Lost” lyrics:
    I suppose
    Old Man Trump knows

    Just how much
    Racial Hate

    he stirred up
In the bloodpot of human hearts

    When he drawed
    That color line

    Here at his
    Eighteen hundred family project

*Not sure where the additional lyrics were inserted in the live version(s) , but great additions.

Yes, and the subject of Burning Bridges was called a “butthole,” plain and simple. Lu had some trouble in front of Can’t Let Go, saying she felt “disconnected,” but new monitors guy Matt fixed it. Seems like she said quite a bit up around When I Look at the World, but I can’t recall–you Dawn?

Thanks for all the reports, much appreciated. The FF is representing at these shows!

Chicago bound, I am, and looking forward to it. I still haven’t gotten over missing Philly. 👿

    From Tom:
I’ve probably said it before but one of the best things that happens on tour is the people you meet and sometimes we are lucky to cross paths with some amazing people. This night in Tarrytown was one of those nights as we had Woody Guthrie’s daughter Nora Guthrie in the audience. Nora is an extraordinary woman an runs the Woody Guthrie archive and estate. A couple years back It was Nora who sent a copy of the original lyrics to House Of Earth that Woody had typed out on yellow letterhead in 1947 and which Lu eventually wrote the music to. Nora had sent along a note to Lu saying “I just discovered these lyrics and you were the first one I thought of as someone who could put music to his words, but I understand if it’s too risqué”. Not only did Lu put the music to Woody’s words but Nora eventually invited Lu to perform the song at the Kennedy Center in DC. Nora introduced Lu that night and said “ I think this will be the first time a song about a prostitute will ever be sung at Kennedy Center -and Lu is brave enough to do it”. Of course we eventually recorded a full band version for the Ghosts of Hwy 20 album. Lu has also been doing the version of Woody’s song I Ain’t Got No Home In This World Anymore with the lost verse that mentions Donald Trump’s father, who was Woody’s landlord in Brooklyn. Talk about strange American history. You can’t make this stuff up. And let’s just say the apple didn’t fall far from the tree.
We also got to meet one Lu’s favorite new singers Sharon Van Etten. Needless to say with Nora and her husband and Sharon we had some great conversation at the pub around the corner from the venue.
And a big thank you to Tarrytown for the second sold out show in less than year. We really appreciate it and we don’t forget it.
