1 Fruits of My Labor [followed by apologies for sound, monitorman Kevin then rushing to stage to change out the mike]
2 Are You Alright [preceded by a reference to the lyric book: then, Lu states that while she is against the war, this song is for the soldiers]
3 Right in Time
4 Drunken Angel
5 Real Love [which Lu confirms will be on the new record come September: it has a brief false start but turns out beautifully, so good to hear it again after Lu played it a good deal in 2006: after, Lu smiles and calls it a “straight up rock and roll song” possibly influenced by John Cougar Mellencamp]
6 Tears of Joy [abandoned, after two false starts, Lu saying it’s “too slow” and then finding refuge in a run of rockers. . .]
6a Come On
7 Righteously
8 Honeybee
9 Joy/Riders on the Storm [followed by Lu apologizing for the “mess up” and attributing that to the “first night out”–she leaves the stage wishing us love and peace, but not revolution]Summerfest 2008, Milwaukee/soundman Mark and guitar tech Flappy are not among the crew/great to hear Lucinda on the main stage after Sarah Borges and Carrie Rodriguez respectively on smaller stages/each has a new record coming out, Borges next year and Rodriguez this August/the DJ who introduces Carrie has been given only one sentence of material, but it includes the words “has toured nationally with Lucinda Williams”/CR has added a multi-instrumentalist from Valencia, Spain since the opener tour with Lucinda, and has moved on from the tutelage under Chip Taylor, is now cowriting with the likes of Mary Gauthier and Gary Louris.
Oh yeah, a guy named Mellencamp, with as many trucks outside as Neil Young had during the Greendale tour, followed Lu on main stage. I stayed for part of this. He did not play “Lafayette,” in my hearing. That’s about it.
Looking forward to the debut of Buick 6 in Iowa City. . .
June 29, 2008 at 12:46 pm #35937TimParticipantThanks for the report Stoger. Sounded like it was far from being a real good night. They’ve been off the road since Thanksgiving, though. Sorry to hear about Mark & Flappy. If that holds true, that’s a big loss. I’m flying out to Minneapolis in the morning and will be attending tomorrow night’s show. Let us know how tonights’ show goes if you can. Thanks again.
June 29, 2008 at 12:49 pm #35938TimParticipantOne more thing, Stoger. That multi-instrumentalist from Spain is none other than Carrie’s husband Javier Vercher. He’s a very talented jazz musician. You can check some of his stuff out on you tube.

June 29, 2008 at 6:56 pm #35940Inside JobParticipantConsidering everything it wasn’t the trainwreck that it could have been. Lucinda did not get a soundcheck because John wanted to do some additional rehearsing because it was also their first night. They ended up rehearsing until late in the afternoon. We were forewarned that this may happen earlier in the day, which we appreciated. In addition David and Doug’s departing flights were canceled at Burbank and they ended up driving to LAX thru rush hour only to have to wait until midnight to get on the redeye. They finally arrived in Miwaukee at 7am. The first half of the show went especially well and was picking up steam when a certain band member who shall remain nameless began playing Knowing while the rest of the band was correctly playing Tears Of Joy.
Unfortunately that was a momentum buster, but the rest of the night was salvaged with the last three songs. Everyone was feeling very badly with the mixups etc. Things will only get better.June 29, 2008 at 8:08 pm #35941fuji81ParticipantWater under the bridge. Take the next few shows, work out the kinks, dust off those rusty strings, heat up to a rolling boil, and BRING IT to the Ottawa Blues Festival on Saturday!!!
June 29, 2008 at 10:01 pm #35942stevarinoParticipantThat’s just Lucinda, opening show or final. Didn’t you hear any of the CDs on her live performances of her top five Albums in LA and New York last year? My fave was that she played the entire “Like A Rose” song from her self titled Album, and then at the end said that it was played in the wrong key and made the band play the whole song all over again, and it sounded even better. Its one of my favorite songs, it must have been awesome to hear it twice live.
At Humphrey’s by the Bay in San Diego on her World Without Tears tour she was relying on her Big Lyric Book for the words to her songs and at one point could not find the song she wanted, and had to have her stage manager come out and find it for her.
Hey, we all need help from time to time. I still love the music and performances, and will see her whenever, wherever I can.
June 29, 2008 at 11:43 pm #35943stogerParticipantThanks, everybody, for responding. I’m hard by the venue at moment and yes, you can expect an Iowa City report within hours. Tim, send me an e-mail or otherwise make yourself known to me and we’ll canvass at the Twin Cities Zoo. Carrie was too modest to mention the matrimonial tie, I guess. IJ, I hope I didn’t suggest a “trainwreck” in my report; you are right that the first half was superb, culminating in “Real Love.” And as a matter of fact, that “certain band member” confessed to me when I ran into him eating a bratwurst on the upper deck shortly into Mellencamp’s set. I just didn’t want to finger him by name here (and will respect IJ’s wishes and not do so now either). Not even a hint. And I can’t help wondering if that other Forum member lwho posted recently got his singles date out of the deal in Milwaukee. All is not pure LU: gossip anyone?
