4 “Concrete and Barbed Wire”
5 “People Talkin'”
6 “2 Kool 2 B 4 Gotten”
7 “Tears of Joy”
8 “Side of the Road” [with much talk of the self-titled record being remastered and re-released: Full band]
9 “Little Angel, Little Brother”
10 “Sweet Old World”
11 “Blue”
12 “I Lost It”
13 “Drunken Angel”
14 “Real Love” [with false start, Lu pronouncing the first rendition “transmutant, weird”]
15 “Little Rock Star”
16 “Essence”
17 “Real Live Bleeding Fingers and Broken Guitar Strings”
18 “Honeybee”
19 “Joy”
20 “Righteously”
______________________________________________________________
21 “Motherless Children” [solo]
22 “Changed the Locks”
23 “It’s a Long Way to the top”
___________________________________________________________________
24 “Angel”No one told me when I reserved a motel .7 miles from the venue that the pedestrian route would involve taking a barely marked right onto “Disneyland Downtown,” looping under the monorail and encountering multiple baby strollers [definitely going against the grain around 5:30-6 p.m.] and weary parents as I headed toward House of Blues. Gamely I ceded sidewalk space to the family units and snared a good spot at the venue proper, eventually.
Guitar tech Nick reprised the Wolfie role and introduced the opening act as the “instrumental stylings of Buick 6.”
And for those of you hankering for an update on the merchandise situation, I have only two syllables: she’s baaaaaaaaack! I spotted a male figure initially, but it turned out to be a twosome behind the merch, teamwork incarnate. Susannah will be in Europe as well. Fine.
As Lu herself said from the stage, the tour is “out of the gate.” Somehow I think the Rialto Theatre of Tucson will prove to be a venue somewhat. . . grittier. Onward.
May 29, 2009 at 8:08 am #39757tonygKeymasterWow. Way to go. I thought I would be the first to post. It’s 1:06 am so I will admit defeat to Roger and go to bed. One thing, I remember Side of the Road being just LW and The Chet.
Great show. I met Susanna. Life is good.
May 29, 2009 at 8:39 am #39758paul_from_losangelesParticipantWow, the 91 and 405 freeways are certainly fast and empty at 1 AM on a late Thursday evening. A great show to start this tour. Good to renew meetings with stoger and tonyg. Stoger documented the setlist, so I’ll just mention the venue was quite full, with all standing downstairs and standing/sitting upstairs. There was also access to the upstairs outdoor patio, for enjoying the cool, misty air, watching the NBA game on TV, and chatting with Susanna. For the fashion police, Lucinda wore blue jeans, with a dark blue patterned shirt. Good night all, or good morning…

stoger, tony and paul all check in after the latest first show. Susannah’s on the scene. Wellx3 gets played.
Synchronicity. Harmonic convergence. Call it what you may.
Thank you, Ms. Williams.
And, thank you, gentlemen!May 29, 2009 at 12:37 pm #39760stellablueeeParticipantpaul knows i paid dearly by missing side of the road……..sigh…….
wish i could have made it down to anaheim. i’m really glad to hear the place was packed on a weeknight, it’s a good sign for sure.i did have a nice long talk with sara petite. someone here texted her (no names but his initials are STOGER) about me which prompted her to call. so thanks for that stoger.
with lucinda gone, i’m guessing she’s not jay leno’s surprise darn it

And, speaking of the latter, it looks like a nice, eclectic mix yet again with a couple of surprises thrown in. “Little Angel, Little Brother” and “Concrete & Barbed Wire” are two songs Lu doesn’t play that often. And, two of my favorites, “Blue” & “Side of the Road”. Nice.
Keep ’em coming, stoger, and Sarah & I will see you in Louisville in 2 weeks!

May 29, 2009 at 5:18 pm #39762tonygKeymasterI think I can manage a review at 10 am the morning after. It took me 2.5 hours in rush hour traffic to get there. Downtown Disney was kind enough to leave about 3 open parking spaces for the 50 cars endlessly circling the parking lot. As Stoger said, you needed a battering ram to get through all of the Mickey Mouse-ear wearing dopes walking seven across, or just standing there slack jawed staring into space, to get into the HOB. I was lucky enough to experience the last 20 minutes of the $30 buffet: stone cold mashed potatos and chicken.
The buffet eaters got into the venue first. Go downstairs for standing room or stay upstairs on this weird balcony and sit on wooden stools. I chose the latter. Naturally, the best seats were “VIP only”. I don’t recall being given a chance to buy these tickets or I would have. My tickets, that said “VIP upgrade” on them, allowed me special access to zero, so I sat in front of the upstairs bar.
Buick Six performed, starting around 8:15. They were fun the first few times. Time to move on and bring a real opening act.
Lucinda hit the stage at 9:23. She looked great and sounded fantastic. Really good voice all night. Cowboy boots in addition to Paul’s attire report. I did see Paul when he came upstairs. I had my eyes open for other websiters but did not see any.
The highlight of the show for me was Side of The Road. Great performance of a great song, with The Chet playing Doug’s electric guitar parts. Blue was also excellent.
I was prepared for the worst regarding the new guitarist so my expectations were low. But I was surprised. I thought Eric S. did a great job and I gave him an “A” for effort. The only song that I thought suffered for lack of Doug was “Essence”. No one will ever play it like Doug. When LW introduced the band some dope yelled “Where’s Doug?”. Luckily, LW didn’t seem to hear him and we dodged a bullet.
The Chet has really stepped it up and has become a big part of the band. Whatever instrument he was playing, it was a big part of the song. I would have tipped my hat to him, if I had one.
The show ended at 11:23; 2 hours on the dot. Being in the middle of Disneyland, there was no hope of finding the bus for hellos, so I hit the road and was home an hour later after burning up the empty roads of LA, as Paul described. Stoger scored by beating me to the post, though.
I bought a T-shirt before leaving and told Susanna she was famous on the website and she giggled. I told her I was going to tell people I knew her and she asked me my name. So I got that going for me. And an $18 black little honey t-shirt.
May 30, 2009 at 2:17 am #39763LeftyParticipantGreat recap, tony. Thanks for that.
May 30, 2009 at 3:01 am #39764LafayetteParticipantRecaps are just one of the things I love about this friendly forum. Thanks so much for all the detailed reports! I can hardly wait for her to come to Cincy.
I must introduce myself to Susanna. Maybe a personalized tshirt is in order…

There is so much terrific music around, I am still scratching my head regarding the infatuated Buick 6 run. One would think that a collaborative approach with an opening band would be beneficial for everyone–perhaps especially ticket sales…
