I don’t recall Shannon McNally being discussed here before. She is easily in my Top 10, but has been off of my radar lately, hence my not mentioning her here before. She is a gifted songwriter with a distinctive, mesmerizing voice. She has recorded with Neal Casal and Charlie Sexton and toured with artists such as Ryan Adams, John Mellencamp & Son Volt.
She played here in Atlanta earlier this month at a small venue (Smith’s Olde Bar), opening for Backyard Tire Fire, a band with which I was not acquainted, but some brief research indicated I would probably enjoy seeing them play. However, my musical budget being what it is, combined with my preference for not seeing my favorite artists as opening acts (too short of a set!), I held out & did not go. (My patience looks like it will pay off – Shannon is scheduled to headline a free show in June at the historic Park Tavern by Piedmont Park in Atlanta!)
Searching the Internet for something else related to Shannon today, I stumbled across this BitTorrent download of a recording of Shannon’s set at Smith’s Olde Bar. I downloaded it and, judging from the accompanying notes, as well as the great sound quality, it appears to be professionally recorded. Hurray! I missed the show, but can still hear her 7 song set!
For those not familiar with Ms. McNally, I highly recommend her album Jukebox Sparrows as an introduction. Geronimo is also very, very good. From there, she has EPs recorded with Neal Casal (Ran On Pure Lightning) and Charlie Sexton (Southside Sessions) and a live album, North American Ghost Music. I have them all. Finally, she has a new EP due out April 27th, Coldwater.

P.S. For those who download the above-linked BitTorrent, there are a few blank spots in the included set list. The missing song titles are: Track 2: “Bolder Than Paradise”, Track 9: “This Ain’t My Home” & Track 10: “Down And Dirty” (there are 3 “tracks” of tuning & band intros)…
April 25, 2010 at 6:32 pm #42988LafayetteParticipantI actually saw Shannon on the Mellencamp tour. She was promoting “Jukebox Sparrows.” I wish I had the interest then as I do now in opening acts. As I recall, I thought she was okay (Susan Tedeschi in 1999 stood out more to me, than did Shannon) but, then again, I took opening acts with a grain of salt. I’ve missed out on a lot over the years with that attitude.
With that said, here is a detailed review of Shannon’s performance, opening for JM, from 2002. John had her come out and perform “Pink Houses” with him to wrap the show.

March 11, 2011 at 8:23 pm #42992tntracyParticipantThe Boston Herald’s Nate Dow gives Western Ballad an “A”!
Her return to New Orleans to record with writer/engineer/producer Mark Bingham has produced the best album of the singer/songwriter’s vastly underrated career. Bingham and his cast of New Orleans regulars help bring her dreamy and soulful meditation on roots music to perfection.
I’m really looking forward to getting my copy on release day!

March 23, 2011 at 5:13 pm #42993tntracyParticipantI received Western Ballad today from Amazon (uncharacteristically one day late) & am listening to it now. I’m up to only the fourth track, but like it very much already. I love her voice…

December 5, 2011 at 7:27 pm #42996paul_from_losangelesParticipantShannon McNally performed a beautiful acoustic show last night (Dec. 4, 2011) at McCabe’s Guitar Shop in Santa Monica, CA. Her featured support was guitar virtuoso Greg Leisz, with additional support from Don Heffington on small percussion objects, and Will Sexton on bass and occasional guitar. This was an intimate performance in the listening room of McCabe’s–a distinct contrast from Shannon’s electric shows in raucous Southern roadhouses. Shannon played a variety of original songs and covers for about 90 minutes, including her stunning cover of Kate Wolf’s “Brother Warrior”, from Shannon’s “Run for Cover” CD.
Shannon & Greg navigate up the coast to Zoey’s in Ventura, this Thursday evening, Dec. 8.
For an extremely louder show, try Shannon at Rooster’s Blues House in Tuscaloosa, Alabama, on New Years Eve.December 5, 2011 at 8:00 pm #42997stogerParticipantHey, what’s wrong with raucous Southern roadhouses, Paul? Since she’s moved to the North MIssissippi hill country, there’s a few jook/juke joints which Shannon might grace from time to time. May have to pass on the 31 December show, though–wish the Viper Room would reprise the 2010 feature. . .
April 28, 2012 at 7:36 pm #42998stogerParticipantJust a brief capsule to note that, upon tntracy’s tip, I drove to Oxford for Shannon McNally Thursday night. Much to my delight, Amy Lavere opened–with a generous hour-long, dozen-song set. Half of these were off the new record Stranger Me, one off her first record, two from Anchors & Anvils, and a pair from the EP (the Waits cover + title track “Died for Love”). She also played a song I didn’t know, perhaps titled “The Bridge.” Not to mention two tunes earlier in the evening at the Lyric Theatre for a live taping of Thacker Mountain radio show, two different ones (“Killing Him” and “Take It or Leave It”). In preparation for The Wandering “supergroup” tour, Shannon invited Amy up to join her for two songs from that material; Amy disparaged that a bit and said “we’ll be ready” when the tour opens May 10, but I thought they were fine. The Wandering comprises Luther Dickinson from N Miss. All Stars, Shannon, Amy, and two other “chick singers” (as quoted by Bryson Jones), one of whom I think is the legendary fife player Otha’s daughter or grandaughter, can’t remember the surname. Perhaps tntracy can provide a link to the Wandering info; I asked Amy if she could sell me an advance copy of the record (due out May 8), but she hasn’t even received it or heard it. After the Wandering tour, Amy has a solo tour working west to east, beginning in either late May or early June.
Shannon was superb, though I had to leave an hour into hers. Eric Deaton on guitar, new member of Hot Sauce on some background vocals; the band left temporarily, and Shannon and her new member did a haunting Townes cover, “If I Needed You,” marred by boisterous Proud Larry’s patron noise. Didn’t get to talk to her.
And now to head toward a DIFFERENT female bard. . .

McCabe’s 2011
August 25, 2012 at 5:42 pm #43000stogerParticipantStella, are you geared up for McNally’s 2012 McCabe’s appearance, with Amy Lavere, slated for Sunday October 14? Good times. . .
May 31, 2013 at 2:32 pm #43001paul_from_losangelesParticipantShannon is currently touring to promote her “Small Town Talk” album of Bobby Charles songs. I attended her recent shows at Joe’s Pub in New York City and Martyr’s in Chicago. She is touring with a 4-piece band of guitar, bass, drums, and keyboard/horns. In New York, she also featured a piano player. Excellent music, but be prepared for a mellow Southern rock style–not Shannon’s folk style.
At Joe’s Pub, Shannon was constrained by a 1-hour set to allow for 3 different performers with 3 paid audiences. For that show, she only performed Bobby Charles songs, and Shannon only played electric guitar.
Last night, at Martyr’s, she played over 90 minutes, and included several non-Bobby Charles songs. Also, Shannon performed encores with an acoustic guitar, including the Bohemian Wedding Prayer Song.
Shannon’s tour continues into June and July, covering the Midwest and Western states. More good shows ahead…
