Anyone going to see Richard Thompson at 3rd & Lindsley in Nashville sat. night? Should be a great show.

Hope you went, Kelly. Being in east TN for a long weekend, I chose the Orange Peel of Asheville, NC (former Lu venue) to see the Electric trio, replete with ex-Love Band bassist and Live at the Fillmore co-producer Taras Produniak (though he now stands stage left these days). I wonder if the Nashville setlist was the same, for it was a brilliant arrangement in Ashe, to my mind. To wit, fifteen songs in the main set: five from the new record, five from the archives, as far back as the 70’s (some unknown to me), and five (consecutive!) from Shoot OUt the Lights! I’d never heard him play any from that Richard-Linda record the other two times I had seen him. In the encore, he returned solo for two from Rumor and Sigh (“God Loves a Drunk” & “1952 Vincent Black Lightning”, the latter almost as good as his Ryman solo take on it from last fall’s Americana Awards show). The band came back for three finales: a cover, another new one, and “Tear-Stained Letter.” Brilliant brilliant brilliant. And Taras looks a healthy, happy man–though only marginally impressed by my Doug-Lu t-shirt. He’s on Doug’s new record, and the Mojo Monkeys still live, from time to time at least.

April 9, 2013 at 9:03 pm #51481musicloverParticipantSound like a very similar show to Nashville’s. I really enjoyed it and will see him again. He did Shoot Out The Lights and some other older Richard & Linda tunes. I need to get that album. The band was excellent. One of the encores was Hendrix “Hey Joe.” He was masterful on this tune. This was the 1st time i’ve seen him perform 52 Vincent Black Lightning. That was a real highlight. Sorry for the late report. Great show though.

I have a boot somewhere from the early 80’s, whereas Mr. Mellencamp, aka John Cougar Mellencamp, covered “Shoot Out The Lights,” with an intro exclaiming “for his money, Richard Thompson was the best songwriter around…”
