Hi guys,
I have a question about the Lucinda Williams limited live show CDs. These are very neat because she performs the entire album live in concert.

My question is, are these releases manufactured as real silver factory pressed CDs like you would buy in a retail store or are these some type of CD-Rs like Instant Live was releasing several years back? I have learned to always ask because my stereo won’t read the CD-Rs, only my computer plays them. I have asked around and received different answers from different people, which is confusing when I’m just trying to find out if they are real CDs.
So, my other question is, which of the live shows would you recommend for purchase?
Thanks,
Jim

I have only the LA set, so I cannot speak to which is “better”. And, in looking at my CDs, they have that blue/green tint to the non-label side like CD-Rs, although they do have a printed Lost Highway (Lu’s record label) label on them. I’ve not heard of anyone having trouble playing them – perhaps someone else who has an older player & these discs can chime in…

but there’s a wonderful video from one of the shows in NY (oct. 4, 2007 / “passionate kisses”, self-titled album): http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=artjAo-AJxo
i hope they didn’t leave out the false start when making these cds.

PS- you’re right, they probably edit some parts to make it more like the original albums as we know them, that’s pretty normal.
August 9, 2010 at 9:03 pm #44009TOverbyParticipantThe only editing that was done was done to make the show fit on the 78 minute cd capacity. Because Lucinda would give the background of most of the songs before playing them couple of the shows went over the 78 minute length. In those cases only the minimal was taken out -just enough to get under the 78 minutes-and a lot of times it was just dead time that was taken out -like if Lucinda went back and talked to Butch about something etc. No music was taken out and very very little banter was removed either. We wanted them to be the exact version of that show.
Also I have had no complaints about the cds not playing regular cd players -when I ordered them I was told that they were the highest quality blank cds available at that time. In fact I still have some of the excess blanks and still use them to make copies of things for the band etc. No one has ever had any issue with them playing or not playing.

Another hardcore fan I talked to said they are real CDs. Were some done as CD-R and some as real CD maybe?
This is a great concept, when an artist can reproduce the full album each night.
I remember seeing Cheap Trick did three week nights to play their first 3 albums in their entirety, plus some other hits/singles and fan favorites. Sadly, Cheap Trick never did a full-scale release, some bootlegs surfaced and maybe a limited run of Bun E.’s official CDs, I can’t remember. Also, I read about the new reissue of Lucinda’s self-titled album here from you guys. Can’t wait!

that’s really nice to know.
i have a question. i think it was mentioned here that the reissue of the ST album would maybe include a bonus dvd with one of the two concerts lucinda performed for this album (don’t recall if it’s the ny or the la one), and i wonder if the five nights from each city (or from just one city) were taped or if just this single night was, and if there are any plans for releasing those concerts on dvd. thanks.
August 10, 2010 at 12:03 am #44012TOverbyParticipantAll of the shows in each city were taped -each were 5 camera shoots. In addition we shot backstage, rehearsals etc. I am told that there is over 100 hours of footage. There are no immediate plans to do a dvd although we have had discussions here and there with different parties. I am hopeful that someday soon they will be able to be released in some form- either as individual nights or as a documentary.
August 11, 2010 at 2:34 am #44013punchdrunkloveParticipantthanks for answering, tom. the idea of one hundred hours of footage sitting out there is both wonderful (it exists!) and sad (it doesn’t exist for us). i hope you can pull off a documentary, but since the RT album is in the imminence of being reissued, i’m confident that a package including a dvd with one of the nights would be an extraordinary addition to an already pretty special release.
was this ever done before? a record plus a dvd with a special performance of said record? seems like a very original way to honor the earlier material.
